Charity Event in Kansas City Roof Giveaway from Gahagan Eddy

In a grand gesture of Kansas City charity, Gahagan-Eddy, LLC., a Prairie Village building and roofing company, is now accepting nominations for the Gahagan-Eddy Roof Giveaway, in which the company will donate a new roof to a local home in celebration of its ten years serving Kansas City with excellence and honesty. The winner of the Gahagan-Eddy Roof Giveaway will be selected from local nominations collected through March 31. Gahagan-Eddy encourages all of Kansas City to nominate individuals or families in need of the gift of a new roof. UFO Sighting Kansas City 2012 February Shawnee

February, 2012 - Two separate reports of UFO sightings in Kansas City came in to us over the weekend. These reports were extremely unique as both reports came in around the same time and were reported within 1 square mile of each other. This time, the visitors were flying over the vicinity of Shawnee, Kansas, one spotted from a home near Shawnee Mission Medical Center, and another from a man playing golf at the Milburn Golf and Country Club.

UFO Sighting #1
This report came in at about 4:45pm on Friday night from a married couple who were working in their back yard in the vicinity of Old 56 Highway in Shawnee, Kansas, near the Shawnee Mission Medical Center. They reported sighting a fairly large craft approaching from the West. The craft was silver / blue in color and had three round lights on the front of it. Then, about 200 yards behind the first craft, another, smaller craft was spotted, following - or possibly "escorting" the larger craft. The second, smaller craft was a blueish silver in color as well and had what appeared to be lights all around the outer ring of the cylindrical vehicle. The smaller craft stayed exactly the same distance behind the large craft the entire time they were flying. The UFOs continued their path until suddenly making a sharp, 90 degree turn in mid air and flew due South at extreme speeds (approx 500 mph according to the witness) until they were out of sight. As the craft were approaching, before they flew away, the husband grabbed his cell phone and snapped the photos that we posted here. It was nearly dark outside so the photos are not clear, but you can see enough to know that these are no ordinary aircraft vehicles. The couple stayed outside for about another hour, watching the sky for a possible return, but no more UFOs were spotted.

This sighting came in around 4:50pm from a man who was finishing up a chilly round of golf at The Milburn Golf Course and Country Club just a few blocks from the sighting from the couple above. This man was walking up the 18th hole fairway towards his ball when he heard a strange "whirring" sound, "like a giant humming bird" as he described it. He looked up and saw a quickly approaching pair of strange aircraft that he described as silver in color, one vehicle was larger than the other and flew in front, the smaller craft flying in a sort of formation behind the large craft. This matched the other couple's sighting to a tee (pun slightly intended).

We have had reports come in of UFO sightings before that were in the same general area and around the same time from multiple people, but NEVER have we had two sightings that were this close to each other. I mean we're talking BLOCKS away from each other, and within about 5 minutes. These UFO sightings were significant as well because one man was quick enough to grab his cell phone and snap a photo. Here at Kansas City News, we foretold at the end of last fall that more and more UFO sightings were going to be captured due to the fact that everyone now has a camera on their cell phone, in their pocket, ready to snap a quick photo. The only drawback at this point is the quality of the photos from most cell phones are crappy at best. But we're sure that very soon, as the quality of cell phone photos gets better and better, we will be seeing a lot more photos of UFO sightings in Kansas City and around the world.

DUI Checkpoints Kansas City February 24th, 25th, 26th

Be careful out there this weekend! Here at Kansas City News we would like to bring you up to speed on the DUI checkpoints in Kansas City for February 24th, 25th and 26th. Remember, there is a new casino that just opened by the Kansas Speedway called Hollywood Casino and they will be swarming all over that place so be careful driving anywhere out and around The Legends Shopping Center.

Checkpoints will also be lurking in the usual places including:

Anywhere along Southwest Trafficway or Southwest Boulevard - avoid those streets if possible, especially on Southwest Trafficway near the Penn Valley Community College (around 31st Street) and also near the Sunfresh in Westport.

Avoid Ward Parkway all together if possible if you are trying to rocket out of the Plaza area from a night of embibing. Ward Parkway will have DUI checkpoints set up in a number of different areas including the most popular areas which are on the 77th block and the 79th street intersection where Ward Parkway splits into Kansas.

Wornall Road is always a popular spot for DUI checkpoints and they usually set those up around the Waldo area, near 75th Street or 77th Street. Wornall also has surprise checkpoints around 93rd Street on that blind corner where if you are driving south towards the intersection of 95th and Wornall, BANG! - there they are and you won't see a thing. Sometimes the Kansas City Police have a motorcycle posted up on the side street of 93rd looking to see if anyone tries to turn around and avoid the trap.

The best idea, of course is to avoid drunk driving and take a cab or find a sober friend to drive, this way you don't have to worry about DUI checkpoints in Kansas City at all! Be careful out there this weekend (February 24th, 25th and 26th) and drive safe!

Gorillas Escape From Kansas City Zoo

Run for your lives! Just kidding, the two 19 year old gorillas that escaped from the Kansas City Zoo have been returned to their cages.

On Sunday, February 19th, two full grown gorillas named Ntondo and Mbundi found that the door to their enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo had been left open, allowing them to escape and wander around freely for a short period of time. When it was discovered that the gorillas had escaped from their enclosure, zoo officials and staff rushed zoo patrons into a safe area temporarily while the gorillas were gathered and "guided" back to their enclosure with the use of water hoses. While no one was threatened or injured, news of the gorillas escape sent shock waves throughout the zoo and it's staff and patrons on Sunday.

Randy Wisthoff, director of The Kansas City Zoo said that disciplinary measures would be taken once they find out who was responsible for leaving the door open to the gorilla enclosure. An investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture and the American Zoo and Aquarium association will be held as a matter of standard procedure. Since no one was injured or threatened, and the gorillas were quickly contained, the zoo will most likely continue to operate as normal.

Ah, there's nothing like a small taste of freedom, and I'm sure that the gorillas Ntondo and Mbundi had a great time for the few minutes that they were out and about at the zoo. I would imagine that it would have been much harder to capture and contain a tiger or a lion, so since it was only 2 full grown and well trained gorillas that escaped on Sunday everyone should consider themselves fortunate in this case. Since most animals in the zoo are very well taken care of and fed, most probably would not even pose much of a threat to humans, unless of course they were provoked, which we at Kansas City News would certainly not attempt!

The two gorillas that escaped from The Kansas City Zoo were estimated to have weighed about 400 pounds each.

E Coli Jimmy Johns Kansas City E. Coli Outbreak

Yikes! A recent report indicated that Jimmy Johns is linked to an outbreak of the E. Coli virus. This is the 4th time that Jimmy Johns has been responsible for delivering food containing various virus infections and diseases. In both 2009 and 2011, Jimmy Johns was responsible for an outbreak of salmonella that reported over 140 cases in the midwest including Kansas City, Missouri. Once again, this outbreak has been found in the Kansas City area, as well as cities in Kansas, Iowa and Colorado.

The E. Coli has been linked to the clover sprouts served at Jimmy Johns. The sandwich chain switched last year from alfalfa sprouts to clover sprouts to try to deter the spread of salmonella, but this year the new clover sprouts caused an outbreak of E. Coli instead. The problem with these sprouts, both alfalfa and clover, is that they are grown, stored, and shipped in a moldy, moist and warm environment, adding to the likelyhood of producing the salmonella and E. Coli virus infections. Despite popular belief, sprouts of any kind are actually VERY low in nutrients, almost as worthless nutritionally as lettuce, so if you think that you are being healthy by eating lettuce or sprouts, you are wrong. You are basically eating water. So at least for awhile, we here at Kansas City News would recommend staying clear of any kind of sprouts until this E. Coli virus outbreak is contained.

WebMD reports the specifics of the E. Coli virus as follows:

There are many conditions with symptoms similar to those of E. coli infection. Diagnosis of E. coli infection can be complicated by the fact that most bacterial infections that cause diarrhea are accompanied by a high fever. If you have no fever or only a mild fever, your doctor may suspect that something other than bacteria is causing your symptoms.

Bloody diarrhea is common in confirmed cases of E. coli infection, but the bacteria also should be considered a possible cause of non-bloody diarrhea. For more information on when to call a doctor about non-bloody diarrhea, see the topic Diarrhea, Age 12 and Older or Diarrhea, Age 11 and Younger.

Symptoms of E. coli infection usually end in about a week with no further problems. But severe blood and kidney problems may occur within 2 weeks after the onset of diarrhea. These problems can cause kidney failure and sometimes long-term disability or death in some children and older adults.

Valentines Day Kansas City Events Date Ideas 2012 KC

Don't tell us you haven't made any plans YET? Well fear not, here at Kansas City News we did some research and found some great Valentine's Day Kansas City events and date ideas for you - you're welcome :)

Kansas City Restaurants

Getting a table at a restaurant on Valentine's Day is going to be a challenge, but we thought of a few places that might be a little on the sneaky side and might be available for a great Valentine's Day date idea.

EBT Fine Dining and Lounge

Located just on the outskirts of Leawood, EBT fine dining and lounge might be another sneaky restaurant that people may have overlooked and a great Kansas City Valentine's Day date idea. This elegant restaurant is very classy but not overpriced (plan on about $35 per plate) and they also have a very casual lounge area that is more laid back and you might just pop in for a drink. They also feature live music around 6pm or so on occasion in the lounge area.

Kansas City Hotels

The Intercontinental Hotel on the Plaza

The Intercontinental might be a place that many people overlooked, they have a wonderful 4 star restaurant and the restaurant is adjoined by a lovely cozy little bar called the Oak Room. Smoking is allowed out on the balcony that overlooks the plaza. They might even have a live Kansas City jazz band going in there on that night since it's Valentine's Day but we were unable to confirm that. The Intercontinental also has a great happy hour that includes gourmet dishes from the 4 star restaurant at cut rate prices.

Westin Crown Center and Union Station

Kind of a "wandering around" sort of adventure, but it could be really fun. Park at the Westin Crown Center free parking garage and then go through the shops, etc. and there are several little places to eat, a little ice cream shop, a movie theater and more. Then walk through the shops to the actual hotel part and they have a great lounge in the main lobby of the hotel itself. The bar is usually not overcrowded and it is just the right amount of upscale meets laid back and casual. After a drink at the bar you could walk through the overhead tunnel that goes over Pershing Street (very cool) and goes into Union Station. At Union Station there is Pierpont's Restaurant and they also have a lounge in the main lobby. Heck, while you're at it, they might even have a room available, maybe one of the balcony rooms, and you could just stay the night.

The Hyatt Kansas City Hotel

The Hyatt is just a really cool place to visit. It may be wide open on Valentine's Day and make a great place for a unique and classy date. The Hyatt has a nice bar on the second floor overlooking the gorgeous lobby area and they also have one of Kansas City's best restaurants, The Skies Restaurant which is probably booked up but it would be worth a try to call for a reservation. The Skies is a beautiful restaurant that rotates on top of the Hyatt giving you a breathtaking view of the entire city as it rotates around. The Skies also has a lounge area so you don't necessarily need a reservation, if you get there at the right time, they might be able to seat you for cocktails and food in the lounge area that requires no reservation.

Live Music and Live Bands for Valentine's Day in Kansas City

There will be some great Kansas City bands spread out through the city on Valentine's Day, we recommend trying The Phoenix Jazz and Piano Bar downtown on 8th Street. It is a really fun upbeat club that is scheduled to have the Everette DeVan trio performing but if that is not the case there will always be a good live band of some kind at The Phoenix. Another place for live music will be at The Czar Bar on 15th Street. They will be featuring Kansas City piano great Mark Lowery and friends and that is always a treat. If you really want to take it up a notch, go down to the Power and Light District and go see the Dueling Pianos in action, get there early as it usually fills up quick in there. Several restaurants in Kansas City will most likely have live entertainment, along the lines of an acoustic guitarist / vocalist, even if they typically do not have live music so watch for that.

If all else fails, Price Chopper always has flowers, candy and food that you could prepare at home for you and your date. It's the lazy man's Valentine's Day date idea, but hey, it's a one-stop shop that has it all, and going out might be too much stress anyway.

Alyssa Bustamante Gets Life in Prison 2nd Degree Murder

The 15 year old girl who said that it felt "amazing" to kill her neighbor, Alyssa Bustamante received a life sentence today for the charge of second degree murder. Obviously, this was a case of first degree murder because Alyssa planned it, dug a grave, lured the neighbor girl out of her house with the help of her younger sister, and also packed a backpack with a knife in it before leading the girl out into the woods to "show her a surprise" she had for her. What a monster! Bustamante will now have to serve a minimum of 35 years and 5 months in jail until she is eligible for parole. She has already served 2 years awaiting trial and that will most likely count toward the 35 years, so we can look forward to possibly seeing her somewhere around the year 2040, when she will be 53 years old.

In a court hearing today, Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce handed down the sentence to the now 18 year old Alyssa Bustamante who at one point in the hearing turned to Patti Preiss, mother of Elizabeth Olten and made an apology to the tune of:

"I really am extremely, very sorry for everything. I know words," she paused here to take a deep breath and gain control, "can never be enough, and they can never adequately describe how horribly I feel for all of this. If I could give my life to get her back I would. I'm sorry."

Well now isn't that special? I'm so sorry that I strangled, stabbed and then slit the throat of your 9 year old daughter because I "wanted to know what it felt like". Sorry about that, my bad. Sorry psycho hose beast, but you are bat shit crazy and headed for the lezbo home for the criminally gifted, where you will quickly become a dyke and probably be passed around from inmate to inmate until everyone has had a taste. And furthermore, I doubt that this incident will be forgotten in 33 years when you are up for parole, as you came from bad stock, a father who was already in jail for stabbing someone, and a mother who was unfit. The real shame is that it is the poor and uneducated people in America who multiply the most. Give me a couple who can't pay the bills, have criminal backgrounds and have a combined IQ of 85, and I will bet you $100 that they have a LEAST one idiot child running around mocking the Jerry Springer Show that is constantly playing in the living room as a background to their trash lives. Wealthy, intelligent people wait until the time is right to have children, when they can afford them, and when they can educate them. Poor people just shoot them out right and left, knowing that good old welfare will have to take care of the kids, or like Alyssa Bustamante, they will end up in jail or juvenile homes anyway.

Alyssa Bustamante is a shining example of a child that is a result of parents who are too stupid and poor to multiply and unfortunately, this case had deadly results.

MU Basketball KU Border War February 4th, 2012 8pm Central

At 8pm February 4th, 2012, at Mizzou's home stadium in Columbia, Missouri, the 4th ranked MU basketball team will face the 8th ranked KU basketball team. With less than one hour away from the Border War basketball game between KU and MU, KU players are getting ready to play one of the most important games of the season. As the NCAA Big 12 basketball teams rally for position, tonight's game could (and will) determine which team will sit on top in first place of the Big 12. There is also a possibility of a three-way tie for first, depending on the results of the 2012 Border War between MU and KU.

Thomas Robinson is a standout player for KU basketball and is most noted for his play on the court but also for the loss of his grandparents and mother within one month's time. Robinson's mother died of a heart attack at the age of 37 after losing both of her parents only weeks before. The KU Jayhawks honored Robinson with a moment of silence in a game on January 22nd, 2011. Of Robinson's character, head coach Bill Self said "Thomas lost his grandmother at the very end of December, he lost his grandfather on Sunday and lost his mother on Friday night. For him to even be out there [on the court] is remarkable."

This Border War between MU and KU is going to be a good one because both teams are rated in the top ten and if the right things happen the result of this game will cause a three way tie in the league for first place. Mizzou basketball fans have been camped out all night in front of Mizzou Arena, waiting for the ESPN analysts and other media hype institutions. The stadium opened up minutes ago and there is no doubt that this will be a sold out event. Missouri enters the match up with the better squad, but both teams have been performing poorly as of late, losing to or barely defeating inept teams. MU will be washing it's hands of the Big 12 in July and heading to the bigger and better stage of the SEC, leaving KU behind to continue to battle in the trenches with the mutants. Regardless of the outcome of tonight's Border War between KU and MU, Mizzou will be victorious overall in the Border War history, thus closing that chapter for good.
