Baseball PBS Series by Ken Burns Omits Royals

PBS series "Baseball" by Ken Burns is a one-sided, biased, preachy drag through our American pastime.  Admittedly a must see for any baseball fan, this series by director Ken Burns was like going to see your favorite band and the lead singer didn't show up.  A very "safe" account of the history of baseball, this series fails to deliver any juicy details about some of the greatest moments in baseball history or it's players.

Ken Burns' "Baseball" was a real wake up call for Kansas City Royals fans.  The series is 18 and a half hours long, and not ONE WORD about the Kansas City Royals - NOT ONE.  The biased, agenda-based series completely SKIPS OVER the years between 1979 and 1985 stopping the story only to mention that in 1985 (the year the Royals won the big one) Pete Rose got pinched for his gambling habits.  The series literally goes from describing the 1978 season, directly to the 1986 season.  Wow.  Apparently the only people who know that the Royals exist are those of us in Kansas City.  "Baseball" does not mention George Brett - AT ALL - not one word about the Royals, even when they were repeatedly kicking the crap out of the Yankees and dominating the American League from 1979-1985.  It is the only period in the history of baseball that this series skips over.  "Baseball" goes over every single year in baseball history EXCEPT these years.  Director / Writer Ken Burns must have had a bad experience while staying in Kansas City, or his cheating ex wife is from Kansas City or SOMETHING because there is just no way you can tell the history of baseball without mentioning George Brett or the Kansas City Royals.  This was a real wake up call for all of us, and very disappointing to be left out of the series completely.  The only time they show any footage of the Royals is when they are talking about Bo Jackson (and the struggles of the black man, of course) and they interview Buck O'Neil a few times.  Buck O'Neil has about 15 minutes of camera time throughout the series and he doesn't mention the Royals AT ALL.  Thanks Buck, nothing like a little Kansas City Royals loyalty from a home town player.  I suppose in Buck's defense, he may have made comments about the Royals that ended up on the cutting room floor.  Most likely to make room for Ken Burns' REAL agenda in this series - read on:

One of the biggest downfalls of "Baseball" is the running theme throughout the series on the struggle of the black man.  They throw this in your face in every single episode of the series, completely halting the story line to take ABOUT 20 MINUTES to drag on and on about black baseball players and how bad they had it.  This agenda-minded brow bashing just gets old after about the 3rd or 4th episode, and we found ourselves fast forwarding over these long boring segments.  This is no exaggeration, not by a long shot, Ken Burns "Baseball" goes so far into the struggles of the black man that one episode has a 10 minute speech by the rambling, babbling idiot Jesse Jackson.  It is ok to do a story on the struggles of the black man in baseball, but Burns really should have done a separate series on this topic, that way we could have opted not to purchase it.  Instead, Burns starts getting into the story of baseball, and just when it starts picking up momentum......UH OH, here it comes, more preaching about how hard it was for the black man.  Even after the 8th or 9th series, when black players and coaches were making millions of dollars, Burns still continues to throw this in our faces.  This bleeding heart liberal crap just ruins the series completely, keep your fast forward button ready because after about the 4th or 5th 20 minute segment about how bad those poor millionaire black men had it, you're going to want to shoot your TV screen.

"Baseball" by Ken Burns relentlessly covers every single movement of the New York Yankees and The Boston Red Sox, I think that they even take time out to tell us the exact shoe size of every player.  Other teams like the Kansas City Royals are completely omitted, and the really interesting stories, like the when Dock Ellis of the Pittsburg Pirates pitched a NO HITTER ON ACID, or the insane lifestyle of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb are sparsely mentioned and grazed over lightly without going into any detail.  Basically, anything interesting that happened in the history of baseball or it's players was payed little attention in this series, unless of course it fit the agenda of Ken Burns which clearly was to cover the struggles of the black man, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.  Anything out of those three categories was ignored.  Well, ok, they went on and on about the steroids for an episode.  Overall, if you're a baseball fan, you should watch this series, but be prepared to be crushed as a Royals fan, and be prepared to listen to a lot of left wing preaching.

Nick Wright Leaving 610 for Houston's KILT 610 AM

Nick Wright leaving 610 for Houston's KILT 610 will no doubt have a few Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fans upset.  "What's Right with Wright" on 610 KCSP AM was absolutely one of the most listened to Kansas City sports radio programs on the air.  Nick Wright will do his final show on May 22nd, 2012 and a replacement has not yet been named.

Upon Nick Wright's upcoming departure from 610 AM he commented that [the move is] "not a bad thing, 610 has treated me very well" and that "I'll be here a little longer and will be able to give details on where I'm going down the road.  But it's all good things."

Some speculated at first that Nick Wright might be leaving us to go National, after filling in a few times on Fox Sports Radio, it turns out that he is just moving to another AM radio station based in Houston, Texas in KILT 610 AM.  Another thought was that Nick may be joining forces with Kevin Kietzman on 810 Sports and remain in Kansas City on another program.  Although Kevin Kietzman's "Between the Lines" on 810 Sports Radio remained the most popular sports radio show by far, Nick Wright had many fans in the Kansas City sports arena.

Nick Wright will be replacing Marc Vandermeer and teaming up with John Lopez on the KILT 610 AM morning show.

Upon Nick Wright's departure from 610 AM, KCSP program director Ryan Maguire commented that "Certainly, we wish Nick the very best and we certainly wish that we could have retained him, we had every intention of retaining him and were negotiating in good faith up until the time his contract expired, but he decided he wanted to take his talents elsewhere. Turnover is a part of any business, including radio, but turnover is only a bad thing if you don't use it as an opportunity to get better, which is exactly what we plan on doing, as is the case any time we make a change. This is not the first time we've had a very talented host we were very high on leave. Nick is not first to have stars in his eyes and big city dreams. We would absolutely welcome him back and no bridges were burned".

And at Nick Wright's new home Houston's Sport Radio 610 Morning Show program director Gavin Spittle said that "I appreciate you giving him a fresh chance. He's fun, he is super excited to be here and he has done some great things in Kansas City. His numbers are terrific. He was going against a heritage sports station and they were neck and neck. He's top 5 in both men 25-54 and men 18-49. He's a great guy who is excited to be a part of the community and hopefully people give him a chance."

George Clinton at Crossroads Kansas City 2012 - Kansas City News

George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars will return to Kansas City and perform at the Crossroads on Friday May 18th, 2012. - Kansas City News

At the ripe old age of 70 years old, George Clinton is still doing it - and doing it FUNKY.  The last time that George was here they hired Sound Check to do the sound at the City Market and George's microphone didn't work for the entire first two songs.  As the roadies and crew scrambled around the stage trying to get George Clinton's microphone turned on, he realized what had happened and he was not happy.  George spent the entire first two songs slapping his microphone into his hand, until finally, the geniuses at Sound Check figured out how to turn George Clinton's microphone on.  George was still a little upset and so for the next song he chanted the same line over and over through the whole song, about an 8 minute song.  We couldn't understand what George Clinton was up there chanting, but he was obviously getting back at the sound crew for messing up his first two songs.

George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars will be at the Crossroads tonight, and hopefully they hired a better sound crew this year and they will get George's microphone turned on. You can always tell how popular a band is by the venue that they perform at, and well, this one speaks for itself.  Whereas in earlier years George Clinton and the P-Funk would have done their show at Sandstone, or in the old days at Kemper Arena, now they are playing at the Crossroads  with The Good Foot, a local Kansas City band as the opening act.  George Clinton inspired an entire generation of artists and musicians with the most pure form of funk music bar James Brown and Rufus.  Although the band never really generated any major hit songs, their outrageous stage show, and overall energy has kept at least a few fans coming out to the shows even after almost 40 years in the business.  George Clinton and the P-Funk definitely inspired local Kansas City bands The Groove Agency and Karma (formerly Simplexity) as well as many other National acts.

George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars usually have around 15 people up on stage, some of them playing instruments, some of them just up there to look crazy.  There's usually a large woman with purple hair, a guitar player who wears nothing but a diaper, and it's hard to tell who (if anyone) is actually playing live or if they are performing to a recorded track of some sort.  With all of those people crammed on the stage you can't really hear what any one member is doing, so it all just sort of goes into this chaotic "jam session" that is the signature of the band.  They will most likely do an encore with their famous song "Atomic Dog", made famous by George Clinton in the 80's, and while it was recorded long ago, the song quality and bass frequencies still hold up today when they play it in large dance clubs and football stadiums, etc.

Catch one of the all time greats tonight at the Crossroads as George Clinton and the P-Funk get funkdafied in yo face.

Chiefs Sign More Players, Dontari Poe Only Draft Pick Unsigned - Kansas City News

The Chiefs have been busy over the past week, making several roster moves as training camp draws closer. On Wednesday, Kansas City signed second-round pick Jeff Allen and fifth-round pick DeQuan Menzie. The Chiefs also inked former Missouri tight end Martin Rucker. On Thursday, they announced the signing of third-round offensive tackle Donald Stephenson.

All of these draft signings means that first-round pick Dontari Poe is the only unsigned draft pick left. It isn’t uncommon for first round picks to hold out or be the last signed, but hopefully the team can come to terms with Poe soon, as the talented but raw prospect could certainly use all the off-season time with the team and coaches that he could get.

The Chiefs also made a move to improve their offensive line, signing the Arena League’s reigning offensive lineman of the year, Rich Ranglin. Ranglin, who also had a stint with the KC Command, is a very athletic and versatile prospect, and should add some depth and experience to Kansas City’s young offensive line.

Charity Event - National Health Care for the Homeless - Kansas City News

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council marches into Kansas City - Kansas City News

On Thursday evening several hundred charitable souls joined forces in Kansas City in the local of Washington Park across the street from Crown Center at Pershing and Grand.  The charity organization, National Health Care for the Homeless, held a fun and upbeat rally in the park that included inspiring speeches, music and dancing, and marching "homeless" people holding up signs for all to see.  The event was held to raise awareness for the homeless in the United States and the fact that most homeless people do not have any form of healthcare.  This week their focus was on Kansas City.

The mission statement of the National Health Care for the Homeless claims that the road to being homeless often starts with a health problem that leads to unemployment, lack of physical ability, and eventually debt and loss of residence or "homelessness". The charity event held in Kansas City was to raise awareness in Kansas City about the causes and consequences of homelessness in the city and the need to work together to end homelessness.  The NHCH believes that this effort must begin with Universal health care, or access to health care.  This is not to be confused with Obamacare, which scares most Americans due to it's ties to Socialism.  The National Health Care for the Homeless are simply trying to give the homeless of America a chance to acquire simple health care.

The NHCH was in Kansas City on Wednesday night as well, holding a charity gala, produced in part by Adam Blue Productions, at the Sheraton Crown Center (formerly The Hyatt Regency) where they had a beautiful reception, dancing and even a little karaoke.

More information on the charity organization from their website:

Integration of service and advocacy is the hallmark of Health Care for the Homeless. The principles of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council encourage homeless service providers and their clients to engage in advocacy to prevent and end homelessness. We strive to accomplish this goal by educating public policy makers, mainstream health care providers, and the general public about the causes and consequences of homelessness in the United States, and by working at national, state, and local levels to ensure:
  • Universal access to health care
  • Affordable housing regardless of income
  • Livable wages for persons able to work
  • Public support for persons with disabilities
  • Strong and effective safety net programs until universal solutions are implemented

Dusty McGrew Charged With Statutory Rape of Boy - Kansas City News

A social services worker in Marshall, Missouri, 31 year old Dusty McGrew, has been charged with statutory rape and statutory sodomy of a 16 year old boy. - Kansas City News

A concerned mother of the 16 year old boy suspected foul play when her son constantly talked about a woman who worked at Butterfield Youth Services in Marshall, Missouri named "Dusty". This started when the boy in question was only 15 years old.  The boy's mother, named "Kim" lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and for whatever reason does not have legal custody of her son.  He has been in the care of The Butterfield Youth Services, a center for children where their slogan is "Our focus is on children; keeping them safe, helping them to heal, educating them, caring for and about them and motivating them to find a positive direction".  Well, it appears that Butterfield Youth Services employee Dusty McGrew, took this slogan a little too far, as she is accused of having sex with one of the boys from the center.

Kim told the press that the Butterfield Youth Services called her for permission to allow her son to spend Thanksgiving with Dusty McGrew and since Kim had no suspicions about McGrew at the time, consented.  Although at Christmas, McGrew bought the boy a new cell phone and then Kim started to get suspicious. The boy's mother finally confirmed her suspicions when she arrived at Butterfield to find her son out in the parking lot talking with Dusty McGrew.  Kim confronted Dusty directly, and when asked about their relationship, both told the mother that they had a "mother-son" relationship.  As the onion of this story was peeled, however, many witnesses came forward telling of a different kind of relationship between the 16 year old boy and Dusty McGrew.  Reports from other children at Butterfield Youth Services claimed that McGrew and the boy had sex together on several occasions, even going as far as to have sex in the back of cars while other children were in the front of the car.  The children who claimed to be present during these car sex scenes, said that Dusty McGrew would stretch a jacket over the car seats so that the kids in the front couldn't see what was happening in the back seat.  The other children also said that McGrew and the 16 year old boy had sex in a nearby park.

Dusty McGrew had even deeper plans for this boy, she was in the process of trying to gain custody of him. Although the state would not allow this arrangement, the boy called Kim on April 18th and told her that he was "fixin' to split" and Kim feared that the boy was planning on running away to be with McGrew. McGrew has children of her own, and claimed that they all got along with the boy.

What is interesting in this case is the fact that they are not only charging Dusty McGrew with statutory rape, but they are also charging her with statutory sodomy.  Now that's just plain nasty.  This story lacks the glamour and humor of the Debra Lafave story, whereas that story involved a fairly attractive teacher having sex with her 14 year old student.  Most in the media made light of this story as it seemed like a school boy fantasy to have sex with their hot teacher, and in this case succeeded!  Ah, but this is the midwest, and our female subject in this story is a routine hefty midwestern lady who decided that she wanted to get a little bit more involved in the life of a 16 year old boy enrolled in the Butterfield Youth Services program.

Dusty McGrew is currently out on bail, meaning that it couldn't have been set too high, and there is a court date scheduled for May 23rd. Kim says that she believes her son is still in contact with McGrew at this time.  She says that she will try to make the court case if she can afford to travel to Marshall from Oklahoma.

Royals Back In Contention With Win Over Rangers - Kansas City News

After an embarrassing 12 game losing streak, it looked like the Royals were headed towards another disappointing season. However, Kansas City has won four games in a row and suddenly finds itself back in contention in the AL Central. Last night, the Royals beat the Texas Rangers 7-4, improving their record to 15-20.

The story of last night’s game was Vin Mazzaro, who made his season debut against the best offense in the American League. Mazzaro was called up to replace Danny Duffy, who was recently lost for the season due to an elbow injury. The young right hander gave up three runs over five innings, keeping the Rangers in check while the Royals offense got big hits from Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Bryan Pena to take the lead. Kansas City also got a strong pitching performance from reliever Tim Collins, who struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of work.

The question now is can Kansas City keep its momentum going? The loss of Duffy is a huge blow to the starting pitching rotation, and the Royals have some tough series coming up. The good news is the Royals have a puncher’s chance to reach the top of the AL Central standings, something that was unimaginable a few weeks ago.

Kansas City will look to keep its winning streak alive tonight, when they begin a three game series with Baltimore. Felipe Paulino (1-1) will start for the Royals, while Tommy Hunter (2-2) will get the start for the Orioles.

Chiefs Celebrate 50 Years In Kansas City - KC News

Several Chiefs executives were on hand at Kansas City's Union Station today to unveil several community initiatives planned for this fall as the Chiefs celebrate their 50th anniversary in Kansas City.

GM Scott Pioli and chairman Clark Hunt plan on focusing on the team's rich history throughout the summer and fall. The team will focus on Chiefs legends such as Len Dawson, Bobby Bell, Willie Lanier and Jan Stenerud.

The Chiefs plan on hosting 50 community events this fall that will include player appearances, and will provide elementary schools with a Chiefs Play 60 kit that stresses physical exercise for children for 60 minutes a day. The team will also display numerous art works that will be placed inside Arrowhead Stadium.

Danny Duffy Out For Season With Torn Elbow Ligament

Danny Duffy only lasted 13 pitches into Kansas City's 9-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox before disaster struck for the young pitcher. Duffy tore his left ulnar collateral ligament, and will likely require Tommy John's surgery. This would mean that the young lefty's 2012 season would be over, delivering a crushing blow to the Royals' starting rotation.

Kansas City already lost All-Star closer Joakim Soria to a similar injury on April 3, and now the Royals have lost two of their best arms. Duffy had a 2-2 record this season with a 3.90 ERA, and seemed to be on the verge of becoming one of the better starters in the American League.

The Royals also lost starter Jonathan Sanchez, who was placed on the 15 day disabled list last Wednesday with bicep tendinitis.

Chiefs Rookie Mini-Camp Begins Today

The Chiefs rookie mini-camp begins today, giving Kansas City’s recent draft picks and undrafted free agents an opportunity to impress the coaching staff and earn a roster spot. The players will spend some time on the field, while also learning about the team’s facilities while meeting with the coaches.

A rookie luncheon will take place, which allows the new players to eat and visit with Kansas City legends. Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt and former players Bobby Bell, Len Dawson, Emmit Thomas, Jan Strenerud, Willie Lanier, Willie Davis, Danan Hughes, Will Shields and Deron Cherry will be in attendance.

Kansas City signed 15 undrafted free agents to add to a loaded draft class, so there will be a lot of competition for a roster spot. Having significant depth is crucial to winning in the NFL, as Kansas City learned the hard way in an injury-plagued season last year. Hopefully the Chiefs can get their draft picks better acclimated to the pros, while finding a steals amongst their UFAs.

Dallas Clark Signs With Buccaneers - Kansas City News

Although it has not been officially announced, different sources have reported that Dallas Clark has signed with theTampa Bay Buccaneers.  This move makes a lot of sense as Tampa's starting tight end Kellen Winslow has been told that "his services are no longer needed" in Tampa Bay.

We were excited to learn that Dallas had made a visit to Kansas City and that he may possibly land here, but we spoke too soon and it looks like Dallas is headed to the Buccaneers instead.  Sorry Chiefs fans!  Here was our original article (that we had strong feelings but were eventually wrong about):

Dallas Clark's best friends is Chiefs O Lineman Ryan Lilja.  Clark and Lilja bonded when they played together in Indianapolis, where they won a Super Bowl together.  Dal las Clark makes frequent trips to Kansas City anyway to visit Lilja, so it is probable that Ryan Lilja had a little pull in getting Dallas Clark on the Chiefs roster.  We have had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Dallas and his wife at recent parties and we find him to be very personable and down to earth.

After floating around in free agency for months, Dallas Clark was amazingly unsigned by anyone, even after his incredible career as a tight end.  Clark comes to the Chiefs with 4887 career receiving yards and 46 touchdowns, more than any receiving member of the current team.  It is not clear what Dallas Clark's role will be as the Chiefs already have two starting quality tight ends in Kevin Boss and Tony Moeaki, but adding another great leader to the team who happens to be wearing a Super Bowl ring sure can't hurt.

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to beef up their running offense and their defense in the off season.  Although Dallas Clark is known for more of a receiving tight end than a blocking tight end, the Chiefs focus will remain on the running game despite the signing of Dallas Clark.  It makes sense for the Chiefs to have a lot of short out receiving options as starting quarterback Matt Cassel is notorious for his lack of long ball throwing ability.  Since Cassel has difficulty getting the ball down the field on long passes, it makes sense to bring in players like Kevin Boss and Dallas Clark so that they can run successful short passing routes that Matt Cassel is more likely to complete.  So, with that in mind, it looks like the Chiefs have a strong running attack with blocking that remains to be seen, a lot of short pass options, and a beefed up defense, who already played quite well last season.

We will expect an official announcement of Dallas Clark signing with The Kansas City Chiefs tomorrow morning.  Many Chiefs season ticket holders have had their eye on Dallas Clark in the past two weeks and now it seems that the Chiefs management are going to make them happy - if only in the short term.

Chiefs Sign DE Ropati Pitoitua - Kansas City News

Kansas City has been busy this offseason, recently signing a bevy of undrafted free agents after the 2012 NFL draft. The Chiefs have continued to make some moves to boost the team’s depth before camp, particularly addressing the defensive line.

Kansas City recently signed former Jets defensive end Ropati Pitoitua in an effort to boost its depth on an underachieving defensive line. Pitoitua has played in 22 games over the past two seasons for New York and should add some competition to the DE position currently manned by Tyson Jackson.

While it is no secret that Jackson has failed to live up to his lofty draft selection, Pitoitua hardly seems like a candidate who could take his starting spot. Still, Pitoitua has seen some significant playing time on one of the best defenses in the league, and with his young age, it is entirely possible he could improve significantly. The Chiefs addressed the NT position in the draft, but it must find more productivity out of the DE spot. This is another sign that Kansas City views this as a make-or-break season for Jackson.

Billy Butler's Blast Leads Royals To Victory - Kansas City News

On a day in which Texas’ Josh Hamilton made headlines by hitting four home runs in one game, Billy Butler decided to grab a bit of the spotlight as well. Butler hit a three-run homerun in the eighth inning to propel Kansas City to a 6-4 victory over Boston. The win improved the Royals’ record to 10-19 on the season.

It appeared that Kansas City was on its way towards another frustrating loss. Despite giving up just three runs, Danny Duffy struggled and lasted 4 1/3 innings. Kansas City’s offense had a big third inning, but had been dormant since. The game was in doubt until Daniel Bard walked both Jarrod Dyson and Alex Gordon in the eighth. That would be the end for Bard, who struggled with his control all night and even had two balks. Boston’s Matt Albers relieved Bard, and three pitches later, Butler crushed a pitch to give Kansas City a lead it would not relinquish.

While Butler’s homer will get all of the headlines, several other Royals had key contributions to the win. Chris Getz and Humberto Quintero both came up with big hits in the second inning to drive in some runs. Getz has significantly improved his performance at the plate this season, and has been a pleasant surprise for a Royals team that is struggling to consistently score. Kansas City also got quality pitching from Kelvin Herrera, Jose Mijares and Jonathan Broxton after Duffy left the game. With the Royals’ starting pitching struggling lately, it is encouraging to see the bullpen step up.

The Royals’ face the Red Sox again tonight at 7:10 p.m. A victory would give the Royals a winning record in its AL East home stand against New York and Boston. Bruce Chen (0-4) will start for the Royals, while Jon Lester (1-2) will take the mound for the Red Sox.

Loss To Red Sox Highlights Royals' Pitching Woes - Kansas City News

After splitting four games with the New York Yankees, the Royals began another AL East series last night against the Boston Red Sox. Once again, Jonathan Sanchez failed to last deep into the game, and Kansas City lost 11-5. - Kansas City News

Sanchez’s struggles are not unique to the Royals pitching staff – Kansas City’s pitchers are averaging fewer than five innings per start, which is the worst in MLB. Early in the season, it appeared that starting pitching might be a strength for Kansas City; however with the recent struggles of the staff, most notably Luke Hochevar, Danny Duffy appears to be the only starter who can keep opposing offenses from lighting up the scoreboard- Kansas City News

The poor pitching wasted a decent outing from the Royals offense, who managed to keep pace with the Sox until Boston scored four runs in the eighth to put the game away. The loss drops Kansas City to 9-19 on the season, eight games out of first place in the AL Central.

Kansas City will face Boston in game two of the series tonight at 7:10 p.m. Duffy (2-2) will get the start for the Royals, while Daniel Bard (2-3) will take the mound for the Red Sox. - Kansas City News

Recap Of The Chiefs 2012 Undrafted Free Agent Signings - Kansas City News

The 2012 NFL draft has come and gone, yet the Chiefs have been busy adding more rookies to their roster recently by signing 15 undrafted free agents. Not only does Kansas City get an opportunity to find a potential diamond in the rough, but undrafted free agents provide excellent competition in camp. As history has shown, several players currently on the Chiefs’ roster have needed a bit of a kick in the rear during camp in the past- Kansas City News

Building through the NFL draft is essential to constructing a championship team, yet undrafted free agents play a bigger role than most realize. Two seasons ago, the Packers were hit hard by injuries and relied heavily on several undrafted free agents while making their run to a championship. Other top organizations, such as New England, are notorious for stockpiling depth and talent with UFAs. - Kansas City News

The following is a full list of the players Kansas City has signed:

WR Josh Bellamy, Louisville

TE Tim Biere, Kansas

DB Neiko Thorpe, Auburn

DE Ethan Johnson, Notre Dame

RB Nate Eachus, Colgate

DB Jean Fanor, Bethune Cookham

FB Taylor Gentry, North Carolina State

DB Tysyn Hartman, Kansas State

LB Dexter Heyman, Louisville

OL Cam Holland, North Carolina

DB Chandler Fenner, Holy Cross

OL Justin Cheadle, California

WR Brandon Kinnie, Nebraska

DB Terrance Parks, Florida State

K Matt Szymanski, SMU

The Chiefs nabbed quite a few defensive backs, including former K-State standout Tysyn Hartman. Also keep an eye on Parks, who had a very productive career at Florida State. Kansas City could use some improved depth at safety, and one of the incoming DBs could very well be suiting up for the Chiefs sometime this fall. - Kansas City News

Another local name Chiefs fans might recognize is Tim Biere, formerly of the Kansas Jayhawks. Biere has shown a lot of talent, but got lost in the shuffle during the offensive horror that was the Turner Gill regime. With Tony Moeaki returning from a season-ending injury and some inconsistency with the other TEs on the roster, don’t be surprised to see Biere make the team.

Adam Yauch Dies of Cancer at 47 - Kansas City News

After a 3 year battle with cancer of the salivary gland, Beastie Boys founder Adam Yauch has died at the age of 47.   Adam Yauch, known to many as "MCA", has been fighting an aggressive form of cancer since 2009, making it difficult for The Beastie Boys to finish their latest album "Hot Saucy Committee Pt. 2" and also caused Yauch to miss the Beastie Boys induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Adam Yauch was not only a member of the Beastie Boys but also the director of the Beastie Boys videos, including a full length concert video called "Awesome; I Shot That Shit!" in which a unique style of filming was introduced where a select few audience members were given video cameras and shot the concert from their seats.  Adam Yauch later put all of the video footage shot by the fans into the movie format.  The movie was one of the best live Beastie Boys concerts ever caught on film and it was produced by Adam Yauch's Productions company called Oscilloscope Laboratories. - Kansas City News

Adam Yauch was also very involved with the Milarepa Foundation, an organization dedicated to freeing Tibet.  The Beastie Boys have references "monks" and "monk music" in many of their albums and they also performed for several benefit concerts for the Milarepa Foundation. - Kansas City News

Adam Yauch - The Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys crashed the party in 1986 with their New York style of blending punk rock with hip hop music.  Adam Yauch and the Beastie Boys have influenced many other artists since the late 80's.  Their first album, Licensed to Ill went straight to number 1 on the Billboard Charts and if you went to a party in the late 80's, that was the album that was continually on the CD deck.  Combining punk rock guitar, infectious rap and a little humor for good measure, Adam Yauch and The Beastie Boys had teenagers memorizing the lyrics to their entire albums - who knows the words to "Brass Monkey"?  Anyone?  Of course you do. - Kansas City News

Often referencing their New York ties, The Beastie Boys were the heroes of their hometown and their fan base spread quickly as their unique style easily crossed over from the rock crowd to the rap crowd, something that had not been done prior.  Adam Yauch and The Beastie Boys often used "samples" in their music such as drum beats from Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, horn hits from James Brown and other R&B artists.  Sampling was a much more open commodity in the late 80's and did not become a serious crime until later, when the bands who were sampled began to sue - such as the famous Vanilla Ice vs. Queen lawsuit that basically cost Vanilla Ice his career - and most of the proceeds from his hit song "Ice, Ice, Baby". - Kansas City News

Adam Yauch will be dearly missed by all of us, but his music will live on for eternity.

Royals Beat Yankees For Their First Home Win Of The Season

As sad as it is that it came in May, the Royals won their first home game of the season last night, beating the New York Yankees 4-3. The Royals were able to hold on in ninth thanks to a fantastic play at third base by Mike Moustakas, who made a bare-handed grab to throw at Alex Rodriquez to end the game. The win improved the Royals’ record to 8-16 on the season.

Moustakas also contributed at the plate, belting a solo shot in the second inning to give the Royals an early lead, and adding two more RBIs in the fifth. The young third baseman is silently having a very good season for the Royals, hitting for a .318 average this season with 4 home runs and 15 RBIs. He has also played excellent defense at third base, and last night’s game winning throw was just one of several highlight-reel plays he has made at third base this season.

Danny Duffy pitched very well for Kansas City, and improved his record to 2-2 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.57. The Royals bullpen was solid, save for a shaky outing from closer Jonathan Broxton. Broxton gave up a hit and a walk before a big double play got Kansas City closer to victory.

The big story before the game was New York’s loss of Mariano Rivera, who tore his ACL before the game shagging balls and may be done for his career. Rivera is the greatest closer in MLB history, and his absence surely played a part on the Yankee’s struggles. However, give a lot of credit to Kansas City, the Royals deserved the win and got the winless-at-home monkey off their back.

Kansas City will play New York again tonight at 7:10 p.m. Bruce Chen (0-3) will start for the Royals, while C.C. Sabathia (3-0) will start for the Yankees.

Junior Seau Suicide not His First Attempt - Kansas City News

Star San Diego Charger Linebacker Junior Seau committed suicide today by gunshot to the chest.  - Kansas City News

Junior Seau was found by his girlfriend Mary Nolan at his home at 600 South The Strand in Oceanside, California dead on the scene with one fatal gunshot wound to the chest and a revolver next to him.  Many friends, relatives and fans gathered outside of Seau's home that was donned with beach chairs facing the ocean.  Junior Seau's suicide came as a shock to the community in San Diego, Seau's home for most of his life.  Junior Seau played in the NFL for 20 seasons, was voted to the Pro Bowl 12 times, and played in 2 Super Bowls, most recently with the New England Patriots in 2007 when they lost to the New York Giants.  Junior Seau leaves behind four children, and his 26 year old girlfriend Mary Nolan.  Junior Seau was 43 years old.  It was rumored that Seau was having domestic problems with his girlfriend and that this may not have been his first attempt at suicide. - Kansas City News

Seau's SUV after driving off a cliff - Kansas City News

Junior Seau's First Suicide Attempt?

Recent actions by Junior Seau had friends and family concerned.  In October of 2010, after being arrested for domestic assault against his girlfriend, 26 year old Mary Nolan, Seau drove his SUV off of a cliff in Carlsbad, California, landing some 100 feet on a roadside below.  Seau sustained minor injuries and was visited in the hospital by friends and family who were concerned for his mental health.  It is impossible to say whether Junior Seau intended to commit suicide when he drove his SUV off of the cliff, but one has to wonder.  Seau contented at the time that he was not trying to commit suicide, but simply "fell asleep at the wheel".  Anyone who has been involved in a serious fight with their significant other can testify that there is no way that sleep would be in the picture after an incident where just hours before he was arrested and released for domestic violence.  The adrenaline would be running too high, and falling asleep while driving just doesn't sound likely, especially following today's terrible news of Junior Seau's suicide.  It seems that he had thoughts of suicide before today.  - Kansas City News

Junior Seau with Ex Wife Gina Deboer Seau - Kansas City News

3 Former NFL Players Committed Suicide Recently

Seau's suicide is the third in a string of recent former NFL player suicides.  In 2011, Chicago Bears Dave Duerson shot himself in the chest and left a note requesting that his brain be donated to the "Study of Football Head Injuries".  Duerson, like Junior Seau, was demonstrating odd behavior towards the end of his life including domestic violence.  It is believed that Duerson shot himself in the chest instead of the usual suicide route of a gunshot to the head so that his brain could be studied for proof of damage sustained while playing in the NFL.  Suicides involving gunshot wounds are typically not found in the chest, and this raises an interesting question about Junior Seau's suicide, was he also trying to preserve his brain for further study as Dave Duerson had done less than a year ago?

Another recent former NFL player suicide was Atlanta Falcons hard hitting safety Ray Easterling, who committed suicide on April 19th, 2012. Ray Easterling had filed a highly publicized lawsuit against the NFL for their negligence pertaining to head injuries and concussions.  His wife Mary Ann said that "after [Easterling's] playing days were over he started to suffer the consequences of the years of bruising hits, he suffered from depression and insomnia, and as his dementia progressed he lost the ability to focus, organize his thoughts and relate to people." - Kansas City News

Former Players Sue The NFL in Growing Numbers

There are now over 1200 former NFL players suing the NFL for damages resulting from head injuries sustained, and consequently ignored by the NFL.  Among the players involved in the lawsuits are Chicago Bears Super Bowl MVP Jim McMahon and Green Bay Packers defensive standout Mark Chmura.  The lawsuit is demanding that the NFL set up a head injury monitoring program, as well as set up a fund that will pay former NFL players after they leave the league for head injury related difficulties. Where will this all lead?  Not to diminish the loss of Easterling and Duerson, but they just didn't have a marquis name like Junior Seau.  There is a good possibility that Junior Seau's suicide will trigger a reaction from the NFL.  Not just a verbal reaction and a slight variation to the rules of engagement when it comes to big hits in the NFL, but an actual documented change.  While the concussions and head injury related fates of former NFL players is a very serious issue, they must admit that they knew the risks involved with the game when they signed up.  Football, by nature, is a very violent sport and that is why it is the most popular sport in the United States.  Fans watch NASCAR for the wrecks, NFL fans watch football for the big hits.  The chance of injury in the NFL is part of the suspense, the thrill.  If they take too much of the Gladiator style play out of the NFL, the game will ultimately suffer.  Will they eventually make the full switch to flag football?  If they do I know that I won't be watching. - Kansas City News

Royals Get Hammered By Tigers As Hochevar Struggles

The Royals entered last night’s game with a chance to turn their season around. They were facing a struggling Detroit Tigers team and a pitcher who had been lit up all season long. So naturally, Kansas City got hammered by Detroit, 9-3. The Royals are now 0-4 against the Tigers this season, and the loss dropped Kansas City to 6-16 for the season and a half game out of last place in the AL Central.

If there is one thing MLB teams can take away from this game, it is that a game against the Royals is the best cure to end any sort of skid. Rick Porcello entered the game with a 15.26 ERA in his last two outings, and held the Royals’ offense in check all game. The Tigers as a team had dropped 10 of its last 12 games and recently lost Delmon Young to a suspension, but Detroit managed to come out hot and cruised to another victory over Kansas City.

Royals’ fans have to be frustrated with Luke Hochevar and his Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde routine. Hochevar has now made a career out of either pitching very well or getting hammered, and this season has been no different. Hochevar has looked like an All-Star in his two wins, and looked like a minor leaguer in his two losses. He gave up five runs in the first inning alone, and by the time he was pulled, Detroit had put nine up on the board against the former first overall draft pick. Hochevar certainly has the potential to be a top pitcher, but he has to find some consistency.

The lone bright spot for Kansas City’s offense was a two RBI game from Alex Gordon and a triple from Jarrod Dyson. Don’t expect the Royals’ offense to fair much better tonight, as Justin Verlander will be taking the mound for Detroit. He will face the Royals’ Jonathan Sanchez, who has struggled this season. The game begins today at 12:05 p.m.

Previewing The Royals' Upcoming Series

The Royals’ game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed last night, meaning that Kansas City will officially start the series tonight. If there was ever a time for the Royals to turn its season around and pick up some much-needed wins against an AL Central opponent, this is it. The Tigers are in a tailspin, losing eight of their last 10 games. To make matters worse for Detroit, the team recently lost Delmon Young to a seven game suspension.

After a ridiculous losing streak, Kansas City has responded well, winning three of its last four games. However, the Royals may have dug themselves in too deep a whole to get back to respectability this season. The schedule is about to get tougher, with New York and Boston coming to town, and series with first place teams like Texas and Baltimore on the horizon. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have been inconsistent this season, and the team’s seven game home stand against these two may very well be the make-or-break point of the season.

Kansas City will face Detroit tonight at 6:05 p.m. Luke Hochevar (2-1) will start for the Royals, fresh off his best performance of the season. He will face Rick Porcello (1-2), who has struggled this season.
