Matt Kenseth Wins Wreck-Filled Hollywood Casino 400 At Kansas Speedway

There has been a lot of talk about the new paving on the Kansas Speedway, and Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 showed why. The race featured a Kansas Speedway record 14 cautions for 63 laps, and was eventually won by Matt Kenseth.

The Speedway’s new revamped conditions, which feature more steep variable banking, has become the talk of the racing world this morning in the aftermath of a race filled with cautions and accidents. Many cars had tire problems that led to cautions, while other cars spun out on the tracks fast surface.

Kenseth won the race despite driving a damaged car, as he banged his Ford into the wall halfway through the race. Martin Truex Jr. finished second in the race, and Paul Menard finished third. Clint Bowyer, the crowd favorite from Emporia, finished sixth and is fourth in the Chase standings. Chase leader Brad Keselowski was able to avoid all of the accidents and finish the race, and he still leads Jimmie Johnson by seven points in the Sprint Cup standings.

While the fast conditions and wrecks grabbed most of the headlines, Danica Patrick found a way to steal some of the spotlight. Patrick spun Landon Cassill on purpose after Cassill angered Patrick by bumping her earlier in the race.

Those who made it out to the Kansas Speedway saw what was one of the most entertaining NASCAR races in recent memory. To put into contrast how crazy yesterday’s race was, just look at the STP 400, which was the final race on the Speedway’s old surface. The STP 400 had only three cautions, while the Casino 400 more than tripled that.

Will drivers be able to adjust to the new conditions at the Speedway, or are Kansas City racing fans in line to see more races like Sunday’s?

Hollywood Casino Kansas City

Kansas City will be adding yet another casino in early 2012 when the Hollywood Casino opens up at the Kansas Speedway. Penn National Gaming, Inc. has been taking over and opening new casinos all across the United States, mostly building casinos in poor ghetto neighborhoods (i.e. Kansas City, Kansas) and Hollywood Casino will be yet another link in Penn National Gaming's chain. The Hollywood Casino 400 race is an advertising ploy to introduce the new casino's presence in Kansas City.

Kansas Speedway Gets Second NASCAR Sprint Cup Race

Bookmark and Share
Kansas City landed its second official NASCAR Sprint Cup Race weekend to be held October 8-9. The first weekend the sport visits Kansas City will be held June 4-5, meaning the Speedway's new lights and development have landed two marquee events in Kansas City.

Hosting a sprint cup event should have an economic impact over $100 million for the Kansas City area, not to mention additional revenue for the casinos, restaurants and other areas that could benefit from tourists and additional customers.

With the addition of lights, night races are now available for the Speedway, although no races have been announced to date. With two NASCAR events locked up next year and the possibility for Indy racing and additional night races, the Speedway appears to be on the cusp of making a huge economic impact for the Kansas City area.

Wyandotte County Casino Approved

The Kansas Lottery Commission approved contracts to build two casinos in Wyandotte County, KS. The contracts were awarded to two separate entities. The companies approved are Kansas Entertainment LLC and Penn Hollywood Kansas LLC. Kansas Entertainment LLC was approved to build a $387 million dollar casino next to the Kansas Speedway. Penn Hollywood Kansas LLC was approved to build a casino near the new Schlitterbahn Water Park.

Well I guess it was just a matter of time before the rednecks filling the stands at Kansas Speedway would be joined by the degenerate gamblers. Even worse, not one, but two, casinos were approved to be built within a few miles of each other. I just hate that Wyandotte County finally has a nice area that is attracting people. I am not a race fan, but people are being drawn to the area by other attractions such as Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabella's, Dave and Buster's, The Legends Shopping Center, dining, and entertainment venues. To this point, if you can avoid the area over race weekend this is still a relatively nice area.

I know some people are excited by the idea of 2 casinos in the area, but I'm not. Wonder why? Take a drive over to the casinos in Missouri. Notice the increased law enforcement. Trust me, it isn't because there is a parade in town. It is because there is an increase in crime in the area. Also, notice the very large empty buildings that are no longer occupied because the casino went under and very few businesses need that kind of room to operate. They look really nice, don't they? I guess on a high note, there will be an increase in revenue from all of the arrests.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Eventually, you had to know that the rednecks that like to watch NASCAR and piss their income away at Cabella's on guns would eventually want to make it a tri-fecta. As the old joke goes, if you want to hide a welfare check from a redneck, put it in their work boots. They need somewhere to throw this money away. I am excited to hear the promises of better schools and increased pay for public servants as a result of the casino money. That never happens either. For normal people, enjoy the end of what could of been a nice place in Kansas, but will just be the equivalent of a retail trailer park.
