Chiefs Fire Scott Pioli

After four disappointing seasons, Scott Pioli has been fired from his position as general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. The move comes with the expected news that the Chiefs will hire former Eagles head coach Andy Reid, and that Reid will be choosing a GM.

Pioli was a massive flop for the Chiefs, who thought they were getting a top-flight GM when they acquired him from the Patriots. In New England, Pioli was a five-time NFL Executive of the Year and served as the top front-office assistant to head coach and general manager Bill Belickick.

During Pioli’s tenure in Kansas City, the Chiefs compiled a 23-41 record. Both of his coaching hires – Todd Haley and Romeo Crennel – didn’t pan out, as Pioli famously feuded with Haley during the coach’s final season. Pioli’s style also frustrated coaches and players, as he was accused of bugging phones in team offices and other secretive behaviors.

It was Pioli’s personnel decisions that were the biggest red flag during his tenure in Kansas City. Pioli made several ill-fated moves, most notably trading a second-round pick to the New England for quarterback Matt Cassel and then signing him to a $63 million contract. Pioli also made several other puzzling moves – he traded Kansas City icon Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for a second-round pick that he used on Javier Arenas and signed several veterans such as Stanford Rout that were disasters. Pioli also drafted extremely poorly, and as a result, the team found itself with paper-thin depth the past couple of seasons.

It was obvious that Pioli had to go, and the Chiefs should have cut ties with the GM much earlier. Kansas City needs to find someone who can build the team through the draft and create a roster with depth at every position. Hopefully, the GM that Reid brings in will be able to get things turned around.

Kansas City Chiefs - Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

Monday night football seems like a really bad idea for the Kansas City Chiefs, who have been an absolute disaster this season and are currently tied for the worst record in the NFL. The entire country will get to watch the Chiefs take on a strong Pittsburgh Steelers team that hasn’t lost a Monday night home game in over 20 years.

The biggest storyline regarding Monday night’s game is former Chiefs coach Todd Haley facing off against his former team. Haley was fired during the season last year, despite leading the Chiefs to a division title the previous season and maintaining a decent product on the field despite a slew of devastating injuries. Chiefs fans now know the truth – Haley simply did not get along with Scott Pioli, who has quickly established a reputation as one of the worst general managers in professional football. Many fans wish Haley was still the head coach, as Romeo Crennel has looked absolutely clueless running the ship this season and has to shoulder a good portion of the blame for the team’s terrible first half of the season.

Matt Cassel will get the start at quarterback, and actually has played decently since returning to the starting role when Brady Quinn went down with an injury. The Chiefs lead the league with 29 turnovers, which has been the biggest factor in their historically bad season. Pittsburgh’s defense has played well recently, and the team will have to play mistake-free football in order to put enough points on the board to win.

The Steelers got off to a poor start this season, but have since rallied to win three in a row. Last week, the team defeated the reigning Superbowl champion New York Giants, and the offense seems to be clicking under Haley and veteran Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh defeated Kansas City last season, 13-9.

The Steelers are banged up and missing a few key players and it is entirely possible that they will overlook the Chiefs a bit. Expect Kansas City to put up a better fight than most predict, but winning a Monday night game in Pittsburgh will require a near-perfect performance to pull off.

Chiefs-Cardinals Game Recap

Football is back, and the Chiefs got their preseason schedule off to a great start with a 27-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Kansas City scored touchdowns twice in the first quarter, using a balanced attack to put the Cardinals away early.

The biggest thing Chiefs fans can take away from this game is that Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki all played and looked like their old selves. The team lost this trio to injuries last year, which was a big part in Kansas City’s failure to reach the postseason. Charles took a hit to his surgically-repaired knee on the first play of the game, but appeared fine as he rushed for 12 yards on three carries.

Offensively, the team’s first-string offense looked very good in the first quarter. Kansas City got a huge boost from new running back Peyton Hillis, who broke a long run and continuously found good yardage on his inside runs. Hillis also scored the game’s first touchdown, catching a wheel-route pass from Matt Cassel for an 11 yard touchdown. It appears the Hillis may be able to return to his 2010 form and provide a nice complement to Charles, while keeping the team's feature back fresh. The Chiefs’ offensive line looked great early on, opening up holes for Charles and Hillis while giving Cassel time to find receivers open downfield.

Defensively, Kansas City did not allow a touchdown until after halftime and made a few big plays as well. Newly-signed safety Abram Elam intercepted Arizona’s John Skelton and returned it 37 yards, which lead to a Ryan Succop field goal. The Chiefs also got points following a great special teams play, as rookie Devon Wylie had a long punt return to set up another short Succop kick.

The team has struggled mightily in the past during preseason play, which led to a lot of criticism from the media and fans of former head coach Todd Haley. It was refreshing to see the team look sharp early-on in this one and defeat a weak team at home.

Jim Zorn New Quarterbacks Coach for Chiefs

Todd Haley completed his 2011 coaching staff Tuesday with the announcement of Jim Zorn as his new Quarterbacks Coach. Mr Wonderful hinted that this might happen two weeks ago in a post about the new Offensive Coordinator. Zorn has over 20 years experience in the NFL as a quarterback and a coach. He spent last season coaching Joe Flacco for the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, he was the Head Coach in Washington after serving 10 years as Quarterback coach in Seattle and Detroit. He has worked with Quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Batch as well as Flacco. All have been successful under his watch. He has also coached Quarterbacks in college.

Zorn was the Seattle Seahawks starter at Quarterback for 7 seasons before Dave Krieg took over in 1983. As an undrafted Free Agent in 1976 he was voted the AFC Offensive Rookie of the year. He was the second Seahawk to be voted into the team's Ring of Fame.

With last week's promotion of Bill Muir to Offensive Coordinator, the Chiefs needed a coach for Cassel as Coach Wiess did both last year. Muir's area of expertise is Offensive Line, so it was important to get a coach in here that knows the quarterback position. Bad haircut not withstanding, Zorn is that man. I think it's a good hire if he can get on the same page with Haley who is fast earning a reputation as being hard to get along with.

Chiefs Pound Titans - AFC West Champs 2010

Merry Christmas Chiefs Fans. The Chiefs dismantled the Titans on Sunday 34-14 - and the Chargers choked at Cincinnati losing to an awful Bengals Football team. Your Chiefs are going to the NFL Playoffs after completing an unlikely two year turn around under Head Coach Todd Haley and General Manager Scott Pioli.

The offensive game plan was exceptional, and execution was spot on. The way we came out throwing was great. When the passing game is working (i.e. Receivers catching the ball), this team is unstoppable. It creates such a problem for the defense - who do you stop? The Chiefs scored on their first four possesions and had a 24-0 lead before the Titans scored on a long pass to Britt. A quick 3 and out by the Chiefs and for a second I was worried they might let Tennessee get back in this one. That's when rookie Safety Eric Berry intercepted an ill-conceived Kerry Collins pass and made an incredible run back to the endzone.

Defensively, the Titans never could get anything going. Our front seven played determined and I think the refs could have called holding or illegal block on just about every play for Tennessee. Our guys just manhandled them and the Titans line was having a tough time. Barring a couple of plays where they were out of position, our secondary played quite well. Remember, both of our Safeties are Rookies and they will only get better - the physical tools are obviously there.

Kansas City Chiefs, AFC West Champs - I like the sound of that. A home playoff game - that sounds nice, too. Now lets go beat the Raiders!

With today's thrashing of the Denver Broncos, The Kansas City Chiefs continue to dominate the AFC West.  The media has not yet fully accepted the fact that the Chiefs are the best team in the AFC.  Sports media reps continue to talk about how great the Chargers are, and hardly even mention the Chiefs during AFC West breakdown discussions.  One reason for this is probably because everyone LOVES Philip Rivers, and cannot accept the fact that his team is just not as good as they should be.  The Chargers prematurely let LaDainian Tomlinson go and he went on to be a big yard producer with the Jets, who are a real team and also sit atop their division (see AFC East Standings).

Hopefully after this week the sports media will begin to take the Chiefs seriously and put a hush on all of the Chargers talk.  The Chiefs have worked harder than any team in the NFL this year and you can tell.  This team, led very emotionally by Todd Haley has established themselves in a category that every team attempts to master - the running game.  Only the strongest teams can put up the kind of rushing yards that our beloved Chiefs (using Mr. Wonderful's terminology) are putting up, and that shows a commitment to the running game that every NFL team strives to build.

Chiefs Survive Scare From Buffalo

This one was supposed to be easy. With the red-hot Chiefs facing lowly Buffalo, everyone predicted an easy Kansas City victory. In the end, the Chiefs were lucky to escape with a win, as Ryan Succop nailed a field goal as overtime expired to give Kansas City a 13-10 victory.

Many thought the Chiefs would coast to an easy win given their favorable matchup in the run game. Kansas City entered the game leading the game in rushing, while the Bills boasted the worst rush defense in the NFL. The Chiefs took advantage of the matchup, rushing for over 270 yards including a 177 yard effort from Jamaal Charles. Matt Cassel delivered a steady performance, and the Chiefs defense looked good all night.

Despite the positives, something was missing all game for the Chiefs, and the Bills were able to keep it close. Facing a fourth and four late in the game, the Bills scored to force a wild overtime that was much more exciting than regulation. The Bills had a chance to win it, and Rian Lindell did just that. Only Todd Haley called timeout before the kick, and Lindell's next attempt hit the upright, giving the Chiefs the ball. Only Kansas City, after an impressive offensive drive, missed a FG of its own. However the Chiefs' defense held, and Succop finally delivered and helped the Chiefs avoid a rare overtime tie.

It was an ugly game, but even good teams have poor showings against bad teams. Kansas City won, and took a giant step towards a post-season birth by improving its record to 5-2.

Update to the Kansas Chiefs September 1, 2009

Well, it has certainly been an interesting coupe of days for

the Kansas City Chiefs. There have been a number of what I would consider fairly significant moves over the past 48 hours. They are as follows:

-Head Coach, Todd Haley, demoted Chan Gailey and took over the Offensive Coordinator duties. Now, in addition to assuming the duties of Head Coach, he will also take over the play calling. Haley was the Offensive Coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals last year before coming to Kansas City.

-The Chiefs began the day by releasing veteran Defensive Lineman, Alfonso Boone. Boone, a 2-year visitor in Kansas City, was one of the more surprising moves of the day. That being said, rookie Defensive Lineman Tyson Jackson must be getting the job done along with his college team mate Glenn Dorsey and Ron Edwards.

-With rumors speculating that QB Matt Cassel will be out for 2-4 weeks with undisclosed injuries, Coach Haley announced that Brodie Croyle will start at Quarterback on Thursday night for the Chiefs fourth and final pre-season game against the St. Louis Rams. This should make this year's Governor's Cup quite interesting.

-Today was the cut off date for all NFL team's to cut their rosters to 75 players. The Chiefs showed another sign of their ability to manipulate the system under the new regime. The Chiefs cut WR Amani Toomer and afore mentioned DL Alfonso Boone. They placed T Cameron Goldberg on waivers. RB Kolby Smith was placed on the Reserve/PUP list (physically unable to perform). Lastly, the Chiefs placed WR Devard Darling on IR (injured reserve). Unfortunate, because it was widely speculated that Darling would be the other starting wide receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe.


For those getting excited about the 2009 season, I would suggest making sure you have a great tailgate because it's going to be ugly. While the attitude around the team seems to have improved, the talent and execution haven't. The offensive line (and I use that term loosely) won't be able to stop anyone. They have been the reason for injury to every QB since Trent Green. Then again, we really don't have a QB worth protecting anyways. Bowe is the only semi-legit Wide Receiver we have and it only will last as long as his work ethic will. The defense still looks like Swiss cheese. Once again, the kickers will be the Chiefs MVPs and may be able to run for president.

Don't be Confused by some of the Chiefs Moves...yet

In watching Herm Edwards fill in on Mike and Mike this morning on ESPN, I thought about how much I respect the man as a person, but how much I also like to see him on the ESPN sets instead of our beloved sidelines. Even the least passionate Chiefs fans know that there has been a ton of needed change at 1 Arrowhead Drive. It started, of course, with Scott Pioli and Todd Haley. In their wake, there has been a continued effort to add more people to create more competition, as per their promise.

The off-season began with the acquisitions of Matt Cassel and Mike Vraebel from New England. Despite his success, I think a guy that hadn't started a game since High School may not be the guy we need behind a swiss cheese offensive line and weak receiving core. Vraebel tags up with Bobby Engram and Zach Thomas to start their farewell tour from the NFL. All three have been potent threats in the past, but those days are well behind them. Trust me.

That being said, the Chiefs did need some senior leadership. The past few years showed Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards running most of the veterans and team leaders out of town. Don't get me started on Jarred Allen. With the recent trade of Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons that would leave...um...Brian Waters. So, I guess these player/coaches could be of some value.

My confusion comes with the addition of Amani Toomer and most recently backup Quarterback Matt Gutierrez. But hey, they released Ingle Martin at QB to make room for Gutierrez. Yeah, I wouldn't make out the flashcards trying to remember either of these guys names any more than they should be purchasing property while employed in the NFL. Still, I see the method in the madness as Gutierrez backed up Cassel in New England. In addition, if we have Brodie Croyle battling Tyler Thigpen for the number two and three spots respectively, I really get it.

This brings me to the well dressed Amani Toomer. I have a ton of respect for this guy, but I think he rounds out the number four spot on the "All-will-be-retired-by-the-end-of-the-season-team." That is, of course, assuming they see time on the field. That brings the Chiefs tally to two receivers that should be watching football on television on Sunday and ten receivers total in camp. DWAYNE BOWE...DO WE NEED TO SPELL IT OUT? CATCH THE DAMN BALL!!

All that said, my opinion is that the Pioli and Haley are trying to bring as much talent as can be acquired at this time of the year to create as much competition as possible in camp. Don't be surprised if half of these guys don't make the team this year. If you will recall, we had Fred "Fred-X" Mitchell on the team last year for a few weeks before the season started. As some of these trades happen, please keep in mind that we have a GM and Coach with winning traditions. Let's not call these moves bad...yet.

Jason Whitlock is a big, fat, racist idiot!!

As an avid Chiefs fan, I was searching for some information on training camp this morning and happened across an article by Jason Whitlock in the Kansas City Star. The article started out mainly focused on Larry Johnson and his ability to overcome his past. It went on to talk about Brian Waters and his botched meeting with the new management team and how it was the fault of management. At the end of the article I realized something I have always known. While Jason Whitlock certainly has an opinion that he voices quite well, at the end of it all, he is a big, fat, racist idiot.

While penning the article he starts by tugging at the reader's human desire for forgiveness. He then goes on to talk about how anyone would do what Larry Johnson has done. Um, Jason, the only thing Larry Johnson and I have in common is we both grew up in nice middle class neighborhoods. I have no tattoos. I don't make a multi-million dollar salary that I don't earn. And by the way, I have never hit or been accused of hitting a woman...on multiple occasions. Where there is smoke there is usually fire.

Jason goes on to explain how poorly Chiefs General Manager, Scott Pioli, and Chiefs Head Coach, Todd Haley, handled the meeting with Brian Waters by basically ignoring him. I have news for Jason and Brian. You do not show up in town unannounced, walk into your bosses office, and demand to be seen and expect to be respected for it. Especially, when your mission is to tell your bosses how to do their jobs. Yeah. They had a couple of other things going on in preparing for the draft and wrapping their brain around a new town, a new organization, and a new season. Message: the inmates are not running the asylum anymore at 1 Arrowhead Drive.

Throughout the article and, when you come right down to it, through his career, Jason has played the part of devil's advocate. Following the lead of such media moguls as Rush Limbaugh, Jason actually enjoys writing and talking about his jaded, one-sided opinion that has very little logic and even less of an ability to understand the opinion of others. He writes and says things just to get a response out of people. I guess that is good for the media, but I would also prefer that you also care about that opinion.

At the end of the day, beneath the hollow, but strongly argued opinions, Jason basically is full of shit. Moreover, most of what he does is lobbying for black millionaire athletes...like they need it. Much like our current president, he runs to the rescue of black people and then finds the facts afterward. Ordinarily, I wouldn't care, but he tends to hide his real opinion behind his talented style of writing. Want to hear the voice of the real Jason Whitlock? Tune in when he takes over the Jim Rome show. There is nothing good in it which is why they kicked his ass off both Kansas City Sports talk shows.

Jason Whitlock is not a figure that Kansas City should be proud to be represented by in the world. If someone actually takes the time read or listen to the crap he shovels out they will immediately think of our city as racially charged and full of shit. Overall, I do not believe that to be the case. I like my city and I don't care for it being represented by a big, fat, racist idiot!
