Chiefs Dominated by Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs were dominated by the Chargers in every phase of the game Sunday. It can only be described as a forgetful performance by the Chiefs. Brody Croyle certainly would like to forget his only start of the season, and 10th consecutive loss as a Chiefs Starter. Though Croyle could be an easy target, this game was by no means his fault. In fact, the rest of the team and the coaching staff should issue a public apology to Brody for the lack of support.

The Offensive Line play was terrible - the worst of the season. Barry Richardson looked lost, and the coaching staff doesn't get the man any help. No holes opened up for the running game and no time for the quarterback. When Croyle did have time, he actually passed the ball pretty well. A key drop by Bowe on third down, a nice pass play called back by penalty, and a great defensive play by a San Diego back kept Croyle's efforts from showing up on a stat sheet.

Defensively, the Chiefs just couldn't get off the field. The Chargers made play after play on third down to keep floundering drives going - The Charger's 11 of 15 on third down compared to the Chief's 0-11. Is that right? 0% third down efficiency? uggghh, this game was worse than I thought. Nevermind, why am I trying to find bright spots. Fuck it, let's look at the rest of the season.

The Chiefs now most likely have to win out to win the division and go to the playoffs. The Chargers have a game lead in Conference record which would be a tiebreaker if they finish with the same record as our Chiefs. Certainly it is doable with the remaining schedule.

at St Louis - St Louis is a young team fighting for their division Championship (very dangerous game)
Home against Tennessee - They seem to have given up, should be an easy win
Home against Oakland - Throw out the record books when we play the Raiders, anything could happen.

Take care of business and we go to the playoffs. I think we can do it, but let's be honest, it's just good to play meaningful games in December.

Chiefs Win, Control AFC West

The Chiefs Defense came up big time and time again on Sunday to beat the Broncos 10-6. No, it wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. That coupled with a Raiders upset at San Diego have the Chiefs in control of the AFC West. The Chiefs kept it interesting all day with their inability to score (or lack of foresight to kick the field goal in a tight game.) Penalties really hurt the Chiefs offense all day long as well as a very stingy Denver defense, particularly in the passing game. Dwayne Bowe was held catchless by Champ Bailey and others as he was double-teamed all day. Matt Cassel was again efficient going 17-13 for 196 yards and a TD (again no INTs - and 158 consecutive passes without an interception). Jamaal Charles was steady with 116 yards rushing. The return to action of Dexter McCluster was a much needed boost. He had a couple of catches.

The real story for the Chiefs in this one was the Defense. They were excellent. Brandon Carr, especially, but the whole secondary gave Orton fits. The Denver quarterback was just 9-28 on the day, OUCH! Tamba Hali had two sacks, one of which he forced a fumble and recovered it (Derrick Thomas Style).

San Diego's unexpected loss to the Raiders give the Chiefs a 2 game lead in the division. A win next week in San Diego would all but clinch it (barring the Raiders winning out). Whatever happens, it sure is good to play meaningful games in December, watching the scoreboard to see what other teams are doing, in short, it's just good to care again.

AFC West Standings - Chiefs Top AFC Standings

The Kansas City Chiefs keep their seat at the top of the AFC West Standings
by Kansas City News

With today's thrashing of the Denver Broncos, The Kansas City Chiefs continue to dominate the AFC West.  The media has not yet fully accepted the fact that the Chiefs are the best team in the AFC.  Sports media reps continue to talk about how great the Chargers are, and hardly even mention the Chiefs during AFC West breakdown discussions.  One reason for this is probably because everyone LOVES Philip Rivers, and cannot accept the fact that his team is just not as good as they should be.  The Chargers prematurely let LaDainian Tomlinson go and he went on to be a big yard producer with the Jets, who are a real team and also sit atop their division (see AFC East Standings).

Hopefully after this week the sports media will begin to take the Chiefs seriously and put a hush on all of the Chargers talk.  The Chiefs have worked harder than any team in the NFL this year and you can tell.  This team, led very emotionally by Todd Haley has established themselves in a category that every team attempts to master - the running game.  Only the strongest teams can put up the kind of rushing yards that our beloved Chiefs (using Mr. Wonderful's terminology) are putting up, and that shows a commitment to the running game that every NFL team strives to build.

Until further notice, the Kansas City Chiefs are the best team in the AFC - don't believe us?  Check out the AFC West Standings and deal with it.
