Dueling Pianos Kansas City Bar Closes in Westport

On March 31st, one of the first dueling piano bars will close it's doors in Westport. After negotiations failed to renew their lease, the dueling piano bar chain Ernie Biggs was unable to achieve satisfactory lease renewal terms and ceased operations. The long standing Kansas City dueling pianos venue was one of only two dueling pianos bars in KC and will be replaced by Johnny Kaw's Yard Bar. This is a popular bar in Waldo and at Kansas State University's Aggieville in Manhattan, KS that features yard polo and yard Jenga as well as a full service restaurant and bar.

Kansas City dueling pianos got their start back in the early 2000's with a few KC bars offering "dueling pianos night" then eventually two major dueling piano chains set up shop in Westport, and then in the Power and Light District. Ernie Biggs was the first chain to move into the Kansas City area and they had a decent run until their recent closing. There is no word of another club opening here in KC, and there have actually been a few other dueling piano bar closings in the surrounding area including Branson, MO.

Dueling Pianos is a popular form of entertainment for corporate events, charity fundraisers and wedding receptions and one popular act continues to operate in Kansas City called BIG SHOW Dueling Pianos, who are available for hire. They perform select shows in KC including The VooDoo Lounge, The Kansas City Marathon, Crown Center concerts and they also opened for Billy Joel at Kauffman Stadium in July. BIG SHOW Dueling Pianos were also featured on the FOX 4 morning show with Mark Alford and Abby Eden.

Dueling Pianos VooDoo Harrahs February 20th, 2015 by KCMB News Kansas City

Friday night, February 20th, Harrah's VooDoo Lounge in Kansas City will feature Dueling Pianos. The concert will feature complimentary drinks and live entertainment. Known for hosting a number of wonderful events, The VooDoo Lounge at Harrah's in North Kansas City has a nice list of National and local Kansas City bands that perform on weekends along with some great Kansas City DJs. The dance floor is usually kicking every weekend at The VooDoo Harrah's and this Friday night will be no exception.

The doors will open at 6:30pm for VIP members who have made advanced reservations, and then the show starts at 8pm. Drinks are complimentary for VIP members of Harrah's Total Rewards members and their guests.

What Are Dueling Pianos?

The flow of a Dueling Pianos show is a little different than that of a live band in that the crowd is encouraged to make requests of the dueling piano players. Audience members typically make requests by filling out little slips of paper or sticky notes typically provided by the venue or the dueling piano players themselves. Generally, in a dueling piano environment, a tip is expected with each request. Obviously, the bigger the tip, the more likely your song is to get played. For example, a decent tip is at least $5 minimum, and a good tip would be $20. Most dueling pianos performers will charge $20 or more to get an audience member on stage, say, if it's their birthday etc.

This Friday night, February 20th, 2015 at VooDoo Lounge Harrah's North Kansas City, the audience will get a chance to watch these guys in action, and join in the fun. See you there, and if you get there first save us a seat!

ALS Fundraiser 2014 Starlight Theatre Kansas City

A Night of Hope 2014 ALS Charity Event Starlight Theatre

This Friday the Keith Worthington Chapter of Kansas City's local ALS Foundation held it's 26th annual gala "A Night of Hope". The fundraiser was held at Starlight Theatre and the theme this year was stars of the big screen and theater. Guests dressed up as their favorite stars and walked the red carpet upon entrance to the gala. We spotted Elvis, Ellen, Austin Powers and his "shag girls", Cleopatra and several more great costumes. The guests at the ALS gala seem like one big family, even though there were several hundred in attendance. Many Kansas City charity events and fundraising organizations don't appear to be as closely knit as the ALS group. These kind people are very dedicated indeed to funding ALS research as was marked by the extraordinary length of the auction portion of the night.

A Night Of Hope 2014 at Starlight Theatre started out with a silent auction that included autographed sports memorabilia, and many great donations made by local Kansas City businesses and restaurants. The night then went into a live auction where patrons bid on lavish vacations to different tropical locations, condo stays and packages, and tickets to major sporting events. After that auction was over, they went into an open cash auction - in which bidders simply raised their bidding cards when a dollar amount was announced. The auctioneer would call out to the guests at Starlight Theatre "Ten Thousand Dollars, do we have anyone who would like to donate Ten Thousand Dollars", and on and on it went all the way down to $250. The auction portion of A Night Of Hope 2014 ALS charity event lasted over 3 hours, topping even the most lengthy auction in Kansas City, Children's Mercy Hospital, who are known to have extremely long auctions as well. Their goal was to raise over $50,000 in direct cash donations and they easily topped that number. It was very clear that the ALS chapter in Kansas City are extremely committed to their charity, and this charity event at Starlight Theatre proved their dedication. Awards were given out as well, one award called the Tom Watson Award for Courage, and another award called the George Brett Award for Commitment.

The 2014 ALS charity fundraiser event ended with a fantastic performance by Big Show Dueling Pianos, who got the audience up on their feet and dancing for the remainder of the evening. These guys were incredible, you could tell that they were no average piano bar players like what you see downtown, these dueling piano players were of the highest caliber and the night ended with chants of "one more song, one more song" - simply incredible entertainment from Big Show Dueling Pianos.

Church of the Nativity Parish Fundraiser a Smash Hit in 2013

There's big time, and then there's even BIGGER time.  When it comes time for the Church of the Nativity to throw their annual fundraiser for their school The Nativity Parish School, the entire city of Leawood shows up to party. This year, the annual fundraiser hit it's highest mark in regards to donations raised and this was partly due to a change in entertainment for the event.  Instead of going with a regular cover band this year, The Church of Nativity got with the times and brought in The Dueling Piano Guys, a National touring dueling piano act based in Kansas City, Missouri.

Although the auctioneers at this event went on a little too long for most, and started to become a little irritating (there's only so much auctioneering rattle you can stand) - when the Dueling Piano Guys hit the stage  the party lit into action. In years past, many would leave the event after the auction, but not this year. The guests immediately packed the dance floor and stayed there for entire 75 minute performance. From making "human trumpets" out of some hand picked guys and gals from the crowd, to a roaring conga line, the dueling piano guys took this event to the next level performing today's hits mixed with hits from every generation.

The totals are not yet in for the amounts raised, but they are sure to be higher than previous years and the Nativity Parish School, located at 119th and Mission in Leawood, Kansas will be reaping the benefits of many generous prestigious members of the Leawood community's donations. Both the church and the school of the Nativity offer wonderful programs for people in the community of all ages, from the school children to adult groups, this organization offers something for everyone. For more information on The Church of the Nativity and the Nativity Parish School, visit their website at www.kcnativity.org

New Year's Eve KC 2023 / 2024 - Kansas City New Year's Eve Events

It's hard to believe but another year has zipped past us and 2023 / 2024 will soon be history. New Year's Eve in KC will fall on a Sunday night this year and we will ring in the new year of 2024 with many parties, celebrations, events and get togethers. At KCMB News we have the scoop on some of the hottest New Year's Eve 2023 events in Kansas City, and would like to share just a few with all of you!

The days of the giant New Year's Eve parties have died off a little bit, the large black tie galas are almost a thing of the past. Today, more people in Kansas City prefer to spend New Year's Eve at more local parties, nightclubs, and celebrations close to home, rather than risk driving on one of the most dangerous nights of the year to be out driving around. There are many events happening on New Year's Eve KC 2023 and some of the top parties on the list include:

New Year's Eve KC 2023 Major Event: The Power and Light District - Dueling Pianos
This year the P&L downtown will feature one of the greatest Kansas City dueling pianos acts in the Nation, and the party will be going nonstop all night long. Dueling pianos has grown extremely popular in the Kansas City area and on New Year's Eve in KC 2023, they will be kicking up a storm down at the Power and Light District.

The dueling pianos will definitely make the Sunflower House Gala 2012 an amazing and fresh event to attend on Valentine's Day in Kansas City.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts Open for Business

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is open for business and was alive and kicking in Kansas City! Recently we covered an event at the new event center that featured Kansas City's dueling pianos and was sponsored by Bank of Kansas City with entertainment by Bands for Hire Live!

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is an incredible feat of architecture, designed by architect Moshe Safdie, acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota and theater consultant Richard Pilbrow. Kansas City construction fat cats J.E. Dunn Construction Group got the gig to build the center. The total cost of the center was $413 million with another $40 million lumped on the side to operate the center for a period of time until it may or may not support itself financially. The Kauffman Center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, although I can guarantee that a lot of people are making plenty of money off of it's existence.

On the particular night that we were there, the Bank of Kansas City had rented out the Kauffman Center and were having their holiday party. The night was very special due to the immense vision of the Kauffman Center as the absolute center of attention. When you rent out the Kauffman Center for an event, you don't need to provide anything more than a bar and some passed hors d'oeuvres to make the evening magical. They went the extra mile at this event, however, with an incredible performance by Kansas City's dueling pianos, who got the entire crowd up on it's feet and singing along and dancing all the way up until the end of the event.

There are two separate theaters within the 7 story Kauffman Center. Both theater rooms were open for viewing on this night until the Kansas City Orchestra closed one of the rooms to have an extended rehearsal. The room that we did get to see was the red velvet seated Muriel Kauffman Theater, which is pictured here. The entire building is absolutely the most impressive building in Kansas City and we hope to visit again soon.

Catholic Charities Celebration of Hope 2011 Gala

The 2011 Catholic Charities Celebration of Hope Gala at the Muehlbach Hotel Grand Ballroom was a SMASH HIT last night, November 5th. This is one Kansas City charity group that knows how to party! The ballroom was donned with a simplistic yet elegant decor and guests dined while watching a slideshow of sponsors and programs that are a big part of the Catholic Charities charity organization.

The Celebration of Hope 2011 Gala featured a delicious dinner, incredible works of art including pieces by Kansas City artist Bill Drummond, who's artwork was displayed throughout the ballroom and foyer. After dinner, the charity event and auction raised in the neighborhood of $200,000 towards the charity which helps the community in numerous ways (see below for more specific information about the Catholic Charities of Kansas City). The evening was capped off with entertainment from Kansas City's Dueling Piano act Roll Over Beethoven sponsored by Adam Blue Productions. The dueling pianos had everyone up and dancing early and all of guests had a great time. The dueling piano guys got all of the ladies up on the stage to sing "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and they did a great job! Then Joe Kelly was coaxed up on the stage to be a "human trumpet" during a Johnny Cash song and then "Sweet Caroline".

Chiefs Home Opener 2011 Bills

Our Kansas City Chiefs are poised and ready for the home opener on September 11th, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium vs the Buffalo Bills. Although we a short one valuable tight end in Tony Moeaki, the Chiefs have yet to give us a real taste of what they have been working toward in the short off season and preseason. Of course we know that Jamaal Charles is going to get the ball early, but will the opposing defenses be keying so hard on him that it causes him to struggle, or God forbid fumble the ball several times. The Chiefs are looking to Thomas Jones to take some of the heat off of Charles as well as a shiny new passing attack line up in Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin. Cassel, though not so keen on the long ball, will hopefully pass well enough to keep the chains moving, after all, he is the highest paid back up quarterback in the league.

On Sunday, September 11th, the NFL will honor the anniversary of this historic day 10 years ago when the twin towers were attacked in NYC. There should be a lot of chests swelling and an overall National sense of pride that takes over Arrowhead Stadium just before the game kicks off at 12 noon and hopefully the crowd at Arrowhead can help fuel the Chiefs drive towards success. There are a lot of great new things to look at and do at the new stadium including the Hy-Vee Quad, where local favorite band The KC All Stars will be performing. For some members there is also the Founder's Club where they will be featuring entertainment from Spike Blake from the dueling pianos fame. There are also numerous new display cases and monuments to Chiefs history, just be sure and get back to your seat before the fly over!

The Chiefs home opener 2011 vs. the Bills will be a day that we will remember for years to come.
