Elton John Spotted at Royals Home Opener 2013

As we were heading into the VIP entrance at The Kansas City Royals home opener on Monday we barely had time to get our camera out as none other that Sir Elton John himself and his entourage of about 15 people were heading to their private box. We were fortunate to catch him at all as he was quickly whisked off from his car service into the K.

Shown here wearing this Royals cap, Elton was ready to watch the Royals take on the Minnesota Twins in a great home opener for 2013 in which the Royals bested the Twins 3-1. It is not known whether or not Elton John stayed for the entire game, although usually when celebrities this large come to events they wait until the crowd dissipates before attempting to get them back into their car service.

It was great to see Elton John in a Kansas City Royals hat, hopefully that will be some kind of a sign of good luck for this season.  If anyone else was able to nab a photo of Elton John coming into or leaving the game, please email them to us. Our photographer had her camera packed away as we hadn't planned on taking any photos until the opening ceremony began, and BAM! - here comes Elton John. So, before we could get our good cameras out, our only resort was to snap a good old iPhone shot which you see here. It was without a doubt Sir Elton, however and security around him was tight.

The Kansas City Royals will face the Twins two more times before ending the week playing The Blue Jays - and Elton John, who just came from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will head to Las Vegas to begin a string of performances at Caesar's Palace that starts on April 20th.

Royals 2012 Home Opener Preview - Kansas City News

The Royals 2012 home opener is just hours away! After starting the season off with a road trip out west, Kansas City will play its first home game this afternoon at 3:10 p.m. The Royals (3-3) will take on the struggling Cleveland Indians (1-4).

For the second year in a row, Luke Hochevar (1-0) will get the start in Kansas City’s home opener. Hochevar looked impressive in his first outing of the season, allowing only two runs in 6 innings pitched against the Angels. While Cleveland has looked terrible so far this season, the Royals will face one of the league’s better pitchers in Derek Lowe. In his only start this season, Lowe threw seven scoreless innings against Toronto to lead the Indians to their only win of the season. The pitching matchup suggests that this could be a very low scoring affair; however Hochevar has struggled against Cleveland in the past. In 2011, the Royals’ Ace went 1-2 against the Indians with a 5.31 ERA. Derek Lowe has struggled against the Royals in his career, with a 5.72 ERA in games played in Kansas City.

After a disappointing end to its series against the A’s, Kansas City has a great opportunity to take this series and build some momentum. The Royals’ next three series are at home, and several AL Central matchups loom in the near future as well. A hot start could catapult this team into playoff contention, and this year, the Royals seem capable of living up to their early hype.

This will be the first home opener for both Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas, as both were called up from the minor leagues during last season. The Indians went 12-6 against the Royals last season, and won 4 out of the 5 games played in Kansas City.

Royals Season Starts Today

The Kansas City Royals' 2011 season officially begins this afternoon against the Los Angeles Angels. It is opening day at the K, where players and fans alike can look forward to the promise a new season brings.

Kansas City has a new opening day starter after Cy Young winner Zack Greinke was traded to the Brewers this offseason. Luke Hochevar gets the start for the Royals, and Kansas City fans never know what to expect from its former first-overall draft pick. Hochevar is as up and down as they come, but many feel he could be poised to finally break out and live up to his draft status and contract.

Recently, Kansas City turned heads as the Royals' minor league system was rated as the best in league history by Baseball America. Most fans feel this season will be another disaster in terms of wins and losses, and I would agree. The Royals are at least a year away from being able to compete for the division, but it should be fun watching the team grow.

Gil Meche Retires, Hochever Probable Opening Day Starter

Gil Meche unexpectedly retired from the Royals on Tuesday leaving behind $12.4 Million for the final year on his five-year deal. His record was 29-39 with a 4.27 ERA in four seasons with Kansas City. He played 6 seasons prior to that with the Seattle Mariners before Royals General Manager Dayton Moore lured him away with a 5 year $55 million deal making him the highest paid player in Royals history.

It's unheard of for a player to retire and give up this much money, but Meche said he didn't feel it was right to take the money. He is coming off a sub par, injury riddled season that found him working out of the bullpen late in the year. Dayton Moore has said the club will not spend the $12 million on players this season, stating that he didn't see anything out there better than he already had. While I find that hard to believe looking at the Royals roster, it might be wise to spend the money next year when some of our good young talent is ready for the Bigs. What worries me is that Royals Owner David Glass will simply pocket the savings and not put the money into next year's payroll either.

With Zach Greinke gone, the talk at Royals Manager Ned Yost's press conference turned to who the opening day starter will be. Yost hinted that he was leaning toward former first round pick Luke Hochever. Hochever showed some improvement last year going 6-6 with a 4.81 ERA in 17starts. Not really opening day starter numbers are they? It's going to be a long summer at The K.

Kansas City Royals Home Opener - Kauffman Stadium

Kansas City Royals Home Opener at the "K" - Kauffman Stadium

Bookmark and Share

Basically known as adult Kansas City working class "ditch day", The Kansas City Royals home opener was packed with work-ditching Kansas Citians who, like every year consider opening day a national holiday. I too, am one of those people. Opening day really should be recognized as a Kansas City holiday. I mean who actually called in sick that day and expected anyone to believe them? There were a few children out there as well who's parents must have snuck them out of school.

But, a day outside beats a day behind the old computer monitor so this is the way the Kansas City Royals' opening day turned out:

No problem getting in the gate - we got to Kauffman about 2:20pm - perfect. The parking attendants DO NOT accept credit cards which is stupid considering no one carries cash anymore. The old man let us in anyway once he figured out who I was. Good start - free parking. Lots of tailgating going on, looks like many of them had been there since lunch or before. Not much baseball throwing, mostly football throwing. I think for most this was a teaser for the upcoming Kansas City Chiefs season and the required tailgating. This was proved to be correct when during the National Anthem, the entire stadium did the "and the home, of the....CHIEFS!" chant.

Enter the madness. When they say "sold out", they mean it. There were MASSIVE lines for anything that you wanted (or needed) to take care of. The beer vendors were the slowest in the universe. Our first one was a young black girl and an older white guy. It took us about 20 minutes to move up 5 spaces in line. The old man would take someone's order, one person at a time, even if it was ONE beer or hot dog. Then he would slowly bring the item over to the counter, set it down in front of the girl and wait for her to ring the item(s) up. He would put up his hand and say "hold on" if the next person in line tried to order while she was ringing the last person up. So he had to stand there doing nothing until she was done ringing up? That inept team was getting some great comments thrown at them as you can imagine. Next was the line to the bathroom. Approximate wait, 15 minutes. Guys line longer than the girls for a change. When you get in the bathroom you find out why. Three individual urinal stalls and 2 crappers. That's going to be a problem.

Anyway, after we got our beer we found our seats which were awesome. We had Outfield Box Seats next to the new Party Deck. It was a great view and we got there right when Zach Greinke was walking towards the dugout to the cheers of enthusiastic fans. Directly to our right, the new Party Deck area did not look like a good section to be in - WAY too over-crowded, standing room only for the most part, and unless you were up against the front railing you couldn't see a thing except the back of the person's head in front of you. The beer vendor NEVER came around. We had to wait in the 30+ minute lines EVERY time. The natives were restless.

Almost like magic, the sky opened up and the sun came out just as the opening ceremonies were starting. Awesome touch. The Glass family must have more money than we think :)

They announce the lineups:

W. Bloomquist – 3B

The Band that Stunk Up the Field...

Enter the worst bunch of clowns we have ever seen, the so called "band" that opened up for the Kansas City Royals home opener, was the most horrific thing anyone had ever seen. They were lip syncing to some terrible song on a tiny little box of a stage with no flare or fanfare. The female lead singer was wearing white trash jean shorts with high heels on - yipes. There was a super dork of a white guy trying to be "hard core" dressed like a street bum, kind of like Justin Timberlake on crack. Then there was two old guys on drums and a fake keyboard, respectively. There was an old black guy playing the fake bass and he was the only one who bothered to dress up. I can't believe that whatever band given the chance to perform at the Kansas City Royals Home Opener would do so little to make a good showing. There are way too many great Kansas City bands out there to have wasted this opportunity on these schmucks. Whoever is in charge of marketing with the Royals really should have snubbed that band out in the planning stages. Must have been some friends of someone who works at the Royals front office because this band, or whatever it was, totally sucked. NEXT!

Kansas City native David Cook sang the National Anthem. His voice was a little hoarse but he did fine. It's hard to sing outdoors and it's REALLY hard to sing the National Anthem - go ahead, try it :) Then the fighter jets did an awesome fly over.

After the stench of the opening band left the field they introduced members of past Royals organizations such as Amos Otis, George Brett, and the biggest applause was for Willie Wilson. Video montages on the scoreboard followed and then the Kansas City Royals Home Opener commenced.

Basically, the game was pretty boring as neither team had any stand-out big hitters. Single here, double there, dropped infield fly ball by the Royals in the first inning allowing Detroit to score first. Yuniesky Betancourt provided a nice distraction by homering to left field. Zach Greinke pitched an OK game until they caught on to him in the 6th inning. The Royals bullpen collectively failed miserably, and Royals tumbled to an 8-4 loss on opening day at the K. We left sometime during the 8th inning to beat the traffic.
