Late Collapse Costs Royals Series Vs. A's - Kansas City News

There are “tough” ways to lose a baseball game, and then there is the manner in which the Royals dropped last night’s extra-inning affair to the A’s. After taking the lead in the top of the 12th off of a Billy Butler double, reliever Jonathan Broxton allowed two runs and Oakland had a walk-off victory. It was how Broxton gave up the last run that has Kansas City fans fuming.

After former Royal Coco Crisp tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI grounder, Broxton’s control issues began. He hit Yoenis Cespedes on the first pitch of the at-bat to load the bases, then beamed Jonny Gomes on the first pitch of his at-bat to give Oakland the win. It was only the third time the A’s have won a game on a hit-by-pitch in the club’s history.

Broxton’s meltdown wasted some clutch hitting by two of Kansas City’s stars. Billy Butler and Alex Gordon both hit home runs and were responsible for all four of the Royals’ runs. The Royals had chances to add to their total, including a bases-loaded situation in the 5th, but were unable to capitalize.

The Royals’ return home tomorrow with a 3-3 record, and Kansas City can’t help but feel like it missed a golden opportunity to win its first two series of the year. There are some positive signs that should give fans hope – Kansas City’s starting pitching has been fantastic, and the Royals’ main offensive weapons are starting to find their groove. The Royals have a very easy April schedule, and there is no reason to doubt that Kansas City can emerge from the first month of the season with a winning record.

The Royals return to Kansas City tomorrow for the team’s home opener. Luke Hochevar (1-0) will start for Kansas City, while Derek Lowe (1-0) will start for the visiting Cleveland Indians. The Royals lost last year's home opener, 4-2, to the Angels.

Our First Real Hate Mail !!

Here at Kansas City News we pride ourselves in creating controversy, bearing naked truths, and pulling the wool OFF of the eyes of the people.  In our quest to tell the news like it is instead of candy coating it, we often run into resistance and even hatred from some readers.  With this premise I present to you, OUR FIRST HATE LETTER!!

Here is the letter in verbatim:

To whom it may concern:

As a veteran journalist, I just wanted to give you some insight on what it appears you're trying to do.

You cannot "tell the news like it is" if you're just scraping the material off the other news organizations' websites in the metro. If you're "news writers" or "bloggers" are not on the scene, talking to the sources themselves then how do you expect them to write with authority on any of these subjects or news items?

You do, realize, that when you express your opinion, you are stating your bias. You cannot write an opinion that is without bias. By nature, the opinion is stating your bias.

I'm not sure what "candy coat" (not hyphenated because those words are not double modifying any words that follow it in the sentence) you are talking about. If anything, the local news stations sensationalize things and make a bigger deal out of things than they really are. They do not candy coat the news.

And really, you're paying $50 for four paragraphs of someone's random thoughts on news in Kansas City? A freelancer doing actual reporting work is lucky to make that (depending on the market and type of story). Unless you have some money-making scheme (see how money and making both modify scheme to prompt the hyphen) or are obscenely rich, I don't know how you're going to afford that for very long. Please, please, please do not say you're innovative approach is to make money off advertising because that is the actual business plan for most publications. The cost of a subscription to a newspaper or to pick it up out of the rack/newsstand doesn't even cover the cost of the actual raw materials to produce the paper - let alone the labor or overhead costs.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm also hinting that you should brush up on your grammar to ensure clean writing on these blogs.

I just thought I'd give you a few pointers for your little start up.

Good luck.

Sincerely,

Cynic Journalist

Ok, and here is our AWESOME response:
(From Kansas City News)  Well, you sir are a real treat!  And you are also an idiot.  No real journalist in Kansas City would have time to sit down and write this email to us.  But alas, let's play your game and start with YOUR grammatical errors.  See highlighted below:
To whom it may concern:

As a veteran journalist, I just wanted to give you some insight on what it appears you're trying to do.  You sir, are NO veteran journalist.

You cannot "tell the news like it is" if you're just scraping the material off the other news organizations' websites in the metro. If you're "news writers" or "bloggers" are not on the scene, talking to the sources themselves then how do you expect them to write with authority on any of these subjects or news items?  Question, have you ever heard of the internet?  Are you from 1965 or something (hey Johnny, yeah see, let's go get the scoop from Sammy down on 3rd street, yeah he's a real wise guy see)?

You do, realize, that when you express your opinion, you are stating your bias. You cannot write an opinion that is without bias. By nature, the opinion is stating your bias.
I'm not sure what "candy coat" (not hyphenated because those words are not double modifying any words that follow it in the sentence) you are talking about. If anything, the local news stations sensationalize things and make a bigger deal out of things than they really are. They do not candy coat the news.  The "candy coating" that we're referring to is the politically correct manner in which the local news stations use to relay the news.  If there are 400 black kids from the ghetto on the plaza at night in front of the movie theater causing a riot, then there are 400 black kids on the plaza causing a riot, NOT "400 teenagers" as the news puts it.  If the crowd is made up of black teenagers from the ghetto then that is what the news should report.

And really, you're paying $50 for four paragraphs of someone's random thoughts on news in Kansas City? A freelancer doing actual reporting work is lucky to make that (depending on the market and type of story). Well, we have a lot of money because we know what we're doing, apparently unlike yourself.  The news online is not about the news at all, it's about getting web traffic and generating ad revenue.  You see, there's this thing in the world called money, and with money you get power, and with power you can tell the news any damn way you want to.  It's a beautiful thing. Newspaper?  Newsstand?  Haha, you ARE from the 50's man.  What the hell is this newspaper item that you speak of?

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm also hinting that you should brush up on your grammar to ensure clean writing on these blogs.  You made more grammatical errors in this email than you found in my post.

I just thought I'd give you a few pointers for your little start up.  We would like to give you a few pointers as well, switch hands every once in awhile when you masturbate so you don't get carpal tunnel, you douche bag.

Sincerely,

Kansas City News

Plaza Apartment Residents Complain of Foul Smell

Residents at 621 Regis, a large apartment building on the Plaza just off of Ward Parkway, have been complaining of a foul smell coming from one of the apartments on the 6th Floor for the last week.

The cause of the smell was uncovered at 3:35pm today when police entered the apartment to find a the dead body of a middle aged male.

Neighbors on either side of the victim reported that he had often called for an ambulance to take him to the hospital for unknown reasons. The man appeared to be fine during the day and then he would become loud and incoherent at night - and occasionally rushed to the hospital.

Either the gentleman had a medical condition and should not have been left alone, or he voluntarily took his own life with alcohol or medication. There are no signs of foul play and the fact that his body had been apparently decaying in the apartment for days would suggest that he was alone at the time of his death.

The Parking Nazi

Oh the sweet aroma of summer with fall nipping at our heals. Sometimes I wonder why I have lived anywhere else than here in Kansas City on the Plaza, an architectural beauty that has survived the elements of Mother Nature and even the great depression. Oh yes, history, fountains, boutiques and some of the finest restaurants that the Midwest has to offer. Well, I think I have figured out the funds for the local boom to the Plaza area.....The Parking Nazi's.

As a newcomer to the Plaza lifestyle I was engulfed with intrigue and captivated by the hometown and upscale charm this diamond in the rough had to offer. I quickly moved my things into my new apartment anticipating my upcoming exploration of my new demographic location. One thing I had not closely considered was parking. Holy Snikeys!!! OK, so I can park here at all times except 7am to 9am and legal parking here is from 6pm to 7am and here from 9am to 11am. I was begininng to think that I needed a PDA just to keep the parking schedule straight...but wait...alas...a parking garage...I can park on the roof if I am a plaza employee but only in the main garage if I am a plaza customer. I can pay a not so nominal fee each month and park on the lower level west side but not the east. Not only had a PDA become necessary but I better look for one with GPS on it, I grumbled. Overwhelmed, I parked my car in a zone which only restricted parking between the hours of 7am-9am. As I nestled myself in bed the furthest thing from my mind was parking. Oh, had it been a long day.

I awoke to the birds chirping and the arts bellowing my name. I glanced at the clock; 7:15am the digital meter read. I quickly slipped on my clothes and caught a ride on the elevator to the ground floor. I glanced up as the elevator doors glide open and to my dismay I see paper blowing freely in my windshield wipers, an ad, I thought. As I approached my vehicle there they sat - $60 in fines. I was flabbergasted. In that short 15 minutes that my lawbreaking self slept had the law enforcer swooped in and disappeared so quickly I didn't even see them? Not a trace, no black and white car or brightly dressed lights graced the streets around me. There must have been a thousand dollars coating windshields that day to improve the streets of the plaza. I better NEVER hit a pothole, I thought. One by one, the automobile owners surfaced screaming obscenities. Though in my mind, I saw us as survivors, survivors of the person who wore the iron badge.

Who was this person so quick and ready to pounce? A wolf in sheep's clothing, I thought. For anyone so sly and their actions so premeditated would have to be a wolf or perhaps a sly fox. I removed my tickets from my windshield and imagined myself taking the form of a giant paper shredder. I drove 20 feet to the legal parking place that had freed up from those normal 8-5ers and all the while I was giggling as the giant paper shredder dispersed ticketed confetti in my head.

The sky was clear and beautiful and the weather perfect. I refused to let this damper my day. I spent the day gallivanting around planting the seeds of my roots. Still I couldn't get this vision out of my head of the man with the iron badge. I must find this man. I must find this man with such calculated attacks. I lay in bed that evening imagining a Napoleonic image that quickly started to take a more clear shape...yes...I see him...the image...the iron badge...was it...no... was it Hitler?

I awoke determined to catch a glimpse of the wolf. I sprang from my bed contemplating my clothing. Should I wear camouflage? I double checked to assure that I had no number tatooed upon my arm. The night was filled with restless dreams of hiding from men with the iron badge: Shimmying my car through trees and narrow streets blanketed with signs with times and rules. It felt good to finally awake. I had been blessed with one of the few 24hr legal parking places the previous eve; therefore, tickets were the furthest thing from my mind. I slipped out the door confident no one would see me. The sun was blinding but I saw something in the distance. I glanced at my watch 6:59am. The wolf had come out to play; I was sure. I saw, silhouetted against the sun a figure carrying an ominous object. My perspective thrown, at first I thought it to be a gun, then a wooden stake, no...a pitchfork? Was the a spiked tail I see? Suddenly the wolfs arm extended as if to hail something. Fear swept through my body; chills splintered my spine. The object clasped in the hand was worse than I could have ever imagined, it bore the dreaded name, Papermate. The fountain of fines began to flow. I ran as fast as I could. I felt the villain on my heels. I burst into the lobby of sanctuary and finally caught my breath. I need not know more, for what I knew already was all I could bear.

I changed my clothes, realizing that illegal parking was not an option. The man with the iron badge would always win. I found peace in the fact that today would be a good day. Today would be fine free. I meandered my way to my car recapping the events of the last 48 hours. When I finally reached my car, there I saw it, something flailing in my wind attached to my windshield wipers. Well, there was no way, I was parked legally. I lifted the yellow sheet and read ILLEGAL DISPLAY OF TAGS. In fine print.....WELCOME TO THE PLAZA.

Time Warner Cable's new "Turbo" Upgrade = SCAM

I'm sure that you've seen the irritating commercials for Time Warner Cable's new "Turbo" upgrade for their internet service. They claim that for an extra $25 per month (which is ghastly), you can increase the speed of your internet.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to call "bullshit" on this one.

I recently moved into a new home and since my choices are pretty limited as far as choosing a cable company (AT&T sucks, no internet if you go to Satellite) I signed up for Time Warner's basic internet and cable TV package.

For a few months, my internet speed was good. Then it recently started to mysteriously slow down. And this was a coincidence because at the same time my internet speed started to slow down, Time Warner came out with those internet "Turbo" upgrade commercials. Hmmmm...Very interesting.

Here's what I think - I don't believe that it's possible to "Turbo" your internet speed. I DO, however, think it's possible for Time Warner to "Slow Down" your internet speed from their end. This, in turn, causes the consumer to become frustrated with their internet speed, they see the commercial for the "Turbo" upgrade, and they take the bait and sign on for another $25 per month.

This is a SCAM, people, and I think it sucks.

Kansas City Neighborhoods - A Breakdown of KC Neighborhoods

Kansas City Neighborhoods - a breakdown

I think that Kansas City is probably one of the most tricky cities regarding good and bad neighborhoods. If you don't know any better, you might end up with some serious buyer's remorse.

If you're planning on moving to Kansas City, you'd better understand the different neighborhoods before buying that dream... - or nightmare home.

In order to understand this blog, you might want to pull up this Map of Kansas City for reference. Kansas City is flat with no bodies of water so the streets here run in a perfect "grid" with the numbered streets running East to West, and the named streets running North and South. Isn't that handy :)

Let's start by defining Central Kansas City:

We're not going to discuss downtown Kansas City or any suburbs of Kansas City in this article - we'll do those in another blog. We're just going to focus on the area between 39th and 103rd and between Holmes Road and State Line (look at your map - or picture a square area). This is Central Kansas City.

The first rule of real estate in Central Kansas City is easy - Anything East of Holmes Road is the ghetto. This is true all the way from 5th Street (downtown) clear up to 135th street (Kansas City's most Southern point). Don't move there, enough said.

Now that we've ruled out everything East of Holmes Road, let's start with the area between 39th Street and 47th Street - East of State Line and West of Holmes. This area is pretty much considered the Westport area. Westport has gotten pretty bad lately. There is a shooting in westport almost every week. The shootings happen late at night when the ghetto folks start "cruising" the Westport bar areas - they're not there to buy anything or go into any of the nightclubs - but just to cruise around with their boom-boom music playing and sporting their tricked out cars (who's cost probably kept them from paying that month's mortgage). They are extremely rude (especially to whites) and they will shoot you. So that's nighttime in Westport - as far as the daytime goes, Westport is pretty much full of lower class "hippie" type folks who enjoy the coffee shops and the Pitch magazine. There used to be a lot of gays in Westport but most of them are making their way downtown towards the Power and Light District condos.

South of 47th Street - North of 63rd - West of Holmes - East of State Line. This area contains the Plaza, which has made Kansas City famous for it's lush fountains and top shelf shopping and dining. The plaza is a great little area and contains everything from expensive condos to affordable apartments. Plaza living is very nice - the only drawback is that there is only one grocery store within miles and it is a MAD HOUSE. South of the plaza to Gregory Boulevard is a fairly upscale neighborhood that contains a popular dog walking / picnic area called Loose Park. This area is usually defined as Brookside and it is filled with great little shops, restaurants and neighborhood bars. Brookside is getting older, however, so the upkeep on a house would probably be a huge factor - most of the houses in Brookside are well over 60 years old. The other downside to living in Brookside is that it has ZERO access to any highway.

South of Gregory - North of 85th - West of Holmes - East of State Line. This area, more commonly known as "Waldo" is a lower class area that is deteriorating fast. Abandoned buildings are everywhere, and we're starting to see more PayDay Loan shops and Fried Chicken chains opening up - oh, and pawn shops too. Always a bad sign. For some reason everyone who lives in this part of town has a dog, and all of the men wear sandals. I would stay clear of Waldo.

South of 85th - North of 103rd - West of Holmes - East of State Line. This area includes Santa Fe Hills and the Ward Parkway "mall" - if you can call it a mall. This used to be a great area but it has gone to the dogs. The lower class folk have moved in and it is NOT a good place to live.

South of 103rd - North of 135th - West of Holmes - East of State Line. This area is still fairly nice and includes Red Bridge, Bridlespur and Verona Hills. Those who live there are looking over their shoulder, however, because they know that this will be the next Kansas City neighborhood to fall. Let me just stop and explain something here: The lower class are moving their way south and west - basically to get out of the ghetto that they live in and to get away from their own kind. In reaction to this, the wealthy people are moving South and if they can afford it, WEST into beautiful and expensive Leawood, Kansas to avoid the oncoming ghetto folk. For a good example of this movement, take a look at how far south they have built up on Metcalf - wealthy people are running SOUTH. Back to this neighborhood...The best thing about this neighborhood is 435 highway. It's just blocks away. This neighborhood will be safe for about another 5-10 years before turning lower-middle class.

To be continued...stay tuned for North Kansas City, Grandview, Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs and downtown kc.

Paula Abdul Leaves American Idol

Earlier today American Idol judge Paula Abdul announced via Twitter that she was stepping down from the popular TV show. Paula was surely upset with American Idol after they secured a contract with their newest judge Kara DioGuardi and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest before even making Paula an offer. Seacrest signed a three year, $15 Million dollar deal with A.I. just last week.

It's pretty obvious that American Idol expected Paula to quit. If they wanted her back they would have been more careful to time the contract negotiations with Kara DioGuardi and Ryan Seacrest in such a manner as not to offend Paula. Paula felt hurt that an offer had not even been thrown her way. It is quite possible that A.I. had no intentions of even making an offer.

In Paula Abdul's own words - "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to Idol," Abdul posted on her Twitter feed. "I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon. What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered on me."

So much for the "good witch" :)

Missouri Gas Energy - Aren't Monopolies Illegal?

Call me crazy - and I'm sure that you're right - but didn't we make monopolies illegal back in the Pendergast days? Is there another company out there that provides gas energy to Missouri homes other than Missouri Gas Energy? I don't think there is.

I brought this up because recently we got a "comment card" from Missouri Gas Energy asking us a few questions. "How satisfied are you with your service?", and "Does the pricing seem affordable?". My significant other filled out the form with "What friggin' choice do we have? Please tell us the name and contact information of your closest competition - I thought Monopolies were illegal?"

Although I'm certain that whoever processes these little comment cards doesn't even know the meaning of the word "monopoly", we still sent it in.

Can anyone explain how the utilities companies are NOT a monopoly?

Best Kansas City Golf Courses to Play when you SUCK

I speak from experience guys! Here are Kansas City's best golf courses to play when you totally SUCK at golf:

South Kansas City

Without a doubt, the best golf course to play in South Kansas City when you suck is Minor Park Golf Course. First of all there is ONE sand trap on the entire course. ONE. I've been in it several times - it's almost like a little bonus to be in the only sand trap on the course - all of your friends will laugh at you and point and say nice job dumb ass - you found the only trap on the course. The good news is, you get to bring your corona with you when you play out. Minor Park Golf Course is also very short, making walking a breeze, and the play is relatively fast even on Sundays. HINT: Don't park your car too close to the 9th green or you may not have a windshield when you get back.

North Kansas City

If you're up north - in which case I feel sorry for you to begin with - Zona Rosa is a joke - what are they trying to do, copy off of Johnson County? The streets and buildings might look like Johnson County but the people in the streets and buildings are still rubes from the sticks - but I digress...if you are stuck up north for some reason, a great place to play is Hodge Park. Although there are two golf courses up north that are rated higher in Tiffany Greens (not a bad course but it is somewhat of a treeless ranch) and Shoal Creek (which is a TOTAL treeless ranch), Hodge Park is a MUCH better course than either Tiffany Greens or Shoal Creek - especially if..........you suck.

Hodge Park is similar to it's southern counter-part Minor Park in that it is a nice little well-kept course that is short and relatively free of sand and water. There is a lot of water up there - but it is off in the distance and makes great scenery.

Olathe / Johnson County

If you are not a wealthy member of one of Johnson County's numerous country clubs, then I suggest you look at playing The Overland Park Golf Course. Be sure and make a tee time out there or you will be screwed son. The good news is, some of the best Kansas City Restaurants are in that area so at least you can catch a good meal.

Leawood

If you're lucky enough to get through Leawood without getting pulled over, I suggest Deer Creek golf course. I am a member at Deer Creek and I love this place. It has all of the country club feel without the country club snobs. A full bar, a great staff, and a fairly easy - no wait a minute - this course isn't easy at all! This course is hard as hell! Indeed, do not go to Deer Creek expecting to put up great numbers. No, my friends, pack a nice cooler of booze, bring someone that you enjoy talking to no matter what else is going on, and just enjoy not being at work. You WILL suck ass on this golf course - it is designed to make you realize just how bad a golfer you really are. Remember that day you shot a 78 at that one course? Not going to happen at Deer Creek. But the houses around the course are super sweet and the course is as close to a pro course as you will see in the city, and did I mention that they had a full bar?

WAY out South

If you're in the mood to play somewhere really weird, try playing a round at River Oaks Golf Course. Located in rural Grandview (I know, don't laugh yet, it gets better), River Oaks offers a lovely course that literally winds it's way through the ghetto. Your golf experience will be enhanced by lovely views of broken down basketball hoops, over-sized bbq grills, a roadside park, and even the occasional ghetto resident (who knows nothing about golf) will stroll out onto the fairway with their kids or their dog. You gotta see this place to believe it.

The new face of the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are yet to take a snap at training camp, but you can already tell that the team has a new attitude. It starts at the top with Clark Hunt and goes all the way down to the water boy. The new attitude: Professionalism. Something that has long been missing at 1 Arrowhead Drive. Something Clark Hunt noticed and hired Scott Pioli to change.

After the first day in River Falls, WI you can tell that the Chiefs are taking care of business instead of looking for a ringleader to run the circus. This fact is evident in many facets of the team. The fact that the first day of camp was a rigorous physical test to see who has stayed in shape and who slacked off is a sign. As a a season ticket holder, I love this. I can't count how many times the Chiefs got their jocks handed to them last season because they were gassed.

Probably more to the point and a sign of things to come is all of the controversy surrounding first round draft pick, Tyson Jackson and the fact that he has not been signed. Wait a minute. Did I say controversy? I meant the total lack of controversy. Unlike in past years, when the Chiefs would launch an all out media blitz slandering the player, his agent, his posse, his baby's Momma, and anyone else who could be targeted, we have not heard a peep.

Yes, I believe Scott Pioli is "as promised." He is here to "run the business" and "running the business" is to be handled by those paid to "run the business." There have been no leaks to the media from unnamed sources. There have been no personal attacks creating ill will among players, agents, and the Chiefs staff. There have been no worries about signing Tyson Jackson. Just a hopeful and optimistic outlook as die hard Chiefs fans begin to become anxious for the season to start.

To this point, I am not overly excited about the "All-should be retired" off season acquisitions in Bobby Engram (14 yrs), Zach Thomas (14 yrs), and Mike Vrabel (13 yrs). I am cautiously optimistic about paying an obscene amount of money to a back up quarterback that played in the Bill Belichick system. I have some real questions in the coaching staff. However, I get it. Pioli is bringing in professionals. Guys that can help Pioli get his word across by using actions and experience. Not the kind of guys that continually are accused of drinking too much and abusing women every time you turn around.

What I may like best about it is that the revolving door of no talent sports hacks that hold our AM airwaves hostage every day have nothing to talk about. You know, the jokers that made you pay for Sirius or XM radio so you could get some logical and intelligent information without arguing with every other caller about who the liar is? I digress. There are no more leaks. No more sources. No more to talk about. That is, unless you actually want to talk about the facts as opposed to speculation. All they have to bitch about is having nothing to talk about. I love it.

It is early, but thus far, I am happy to see that the Chiefs are doing what they said they were going to do. They are going to run the business and try to build the best team they can. We are not going to the Super Bowl this year and probably not the year after that and maybe not for a while, but we are starting to act like a group of professionals. That is something that rubs off on people and something the fans of the Chiefs have deserved for a long, long time. I look forward to the future.

Why Don't Minorities Tip Well?

If you've ever worked as a server / waiter / waitress in any kansas city restaurants you might be aware that most minority groups do not usually tip well.

Why is this?

I wonder if it's because the bulk of the industry's servers are white and the minorities feel like the white people owe them something.

But no matter what the reason, it is a FACT that minorities don't tip well or don't tip at all - ask any waitress in town.

Anyone have any answers?
