Royals Back In Contention With Win Over Rangers - Kansas City News

After an embarrassing 12 game losing streak, it looked like the Royals were headed towards another disappointing season. However, Kansas City has won four games in a row and suddenly finds itself back in contention in the AL Central. Last night, the Royals beat the Texas Rangers 7-4, improving their record to 15-20.

The story of last night’s game was Vin Mazzaro, who made his season debut against the best offense in the American League. Mazzaro was called up to replace Danny Duffy, who was recently lost for the season due to an elbow injury. The young right hander gave up three runs over five innings, keeping the Rangers in check while the Royals offense got big hits from Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Bryan Pena to take the lead. Kansas City also got a strong pitching performance from reliever Tim Collins, who struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of work.

The question now is can Kansas City keep its momentum going? The loss of Duffy is a huge blow to the starting pitching rotation, and the Royals have some tough series coming up. The good news is the Royals have a puncher’s chance to reach the top of the AL Central standings, something that was unimaginable a few weeks ago.

Kansas City will look to keep its winning streak alive tonight, when they begin a three game series with Baltimore. Felipe Paulino (1-1) will start for the Royals, while Tommy Hunter (2-2) will get the start for the Orioles.

After a one year hiatus, the All-Star Game Charity 5K and Fun Run will return to the 2012 MLB All-Star game held in Kansas City. The event was canceled in Phoenix last year due to extreme temperatures, but was a big success previously in Anaheim and St. Louis.

Registration now includes an early price of $25 (adult) and $20 (under-13) for the 5K and $20 (adult) and $15 (under-13) for the Fun Run. Space is limited so participants are encouraged to sign up early. Registration and event information can be found here.

Royals Get Hammered By Tigers As Hochevar Struggles

The Royals entered last night’s game with a chance to turn their season around. They were facing a struggling Detroit Tigers team and a pitcher who had been lit up all season long. So naturally, Kansas City got hammered by Detroit, 9-3. The Royals are now 0-4 against the Tigers this season, and the loss dropped Kansas City to 6-16 for the season and a half game out of last place in the AL Central.

If there is one thing MLB teams can take away from this game, it is that a game against the Royals is the best cure to end any sort of skid. Rick Porcello entered the game with a 15.26 ERA in his last two outings, and held the Royals’ offense in check all game. The Tigers as a team had dropped 10 of its last 12 games and recently lost Delmon Young to a suspension, but Detroit managed to come out hot and cruised to another victory over Kansas City.

Royals’ fans have to be frustrated with Luke Hochevar and his Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde routine. Hochevar has now made a career out of either pitching very well or getting hammered, and this season has been no different. Hochevar has looked like an All-Star in his two wins, and looked like a minor leaguer in his two losses. He gave up five runs in the first inning alone, and by the time he was pulled, Detroit had put nine up on the board against the former first overall draft pick. Hochevar certainly has the potential to be a top pitcher, but he has to find some consistency.

The lone bright spot for Kansas City’s offense was a two RBI game from Alex Gordon and a triple from Jarrod Dyson. Don’t expect the Royals’ offense to fair much better tonight, as Justin Verlander will be taking the mound for Detroit. He will face the Royals’ Jonathan Sanchez, who has struggled this season. The game begins today at 12:05 p.m.

Previewing The Royals' Upcoming Series

The Royals’ game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed last night, meaning that Kansas City will officially start the series tonight. If there was ever a time for the Royals to turn its season around and pick up some much-needed wins against an AL Central opponent, this is it. The Tigers are in a tailspin, losing eight of their last 10 games. To make matters worse for Detroit, the team recently lost Delmon Young to a seven game suspension.

After a ridiculous losing streak, Kansas City has responded well, winning three of its last four games. However, the Royals may have dug themselves in too deep a whole to get back to respectability this season. The schedule is about to get tougher, with New York and Boston coming to town, and series with first place teams like Texas and Baltimore on the horizon. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have been inconsistent this season, and the team’s seven game home stand against these two may very well be the make-or-break point of the season.

Kansas City will face Detroit tonight at 6:05 p.m. Luke Hochevar (2-1) will start for the Royals, fresh off his best performance of the season. He will face Rick Porcello (1-2), who has struggled this season.

Home Runs Help Royals End 12 Game Losing Streak

The Royals 12 game losing streak started with a home sweep at the hands of the Indians, so it was fitting that Kansas City ended its horrendous slide against the team that started it all. Backed by several key home runs, the Royals creamed the Indians 8-2, ending its 12 game losing streak and improving its record to 4-14 on the season.

The Royals relied on the long ball last night, and Kansas City’s big three delivered. Billy Butler started off the offensive barrage with a two run blast in the first, and later added a solo shot in the ninth. Eric Hosmer’s two-run home run in the fifth made it 4-0, while Alex Gordon belted a three run home run in the ninth to ensure the streak was over.

There is no way to sugar coat this win – things were getting beyond desperate for Kansas City and the Royals needed to get the monkey of their backs. Not only did the team pick up a much-needed win, but Butler, Gordon and Hosmer all should get a good deal of confidence after great days at the plate. Luke Hochevar also pitched very well, giving Royals fans hope that he can produce the way he did after the All-Star break last season.

Kansas City wraps up its series with Cleveland today before traveling to Minnesota to begin a three game series with the Twins. Luis Mendoza (0-2) will start for the Royals, while Josh Tomlin (1-1) will get the nod for the Indians.

Royals Announce Green Renovations To Kauffman Stadium - Kansas City News

In honor of Earth Day, which took place on Sunday, the Royals have announced a new partnership with Kansas City Power and Light to install a new solar array at Kauffman stadium to produce solar energy. This new feature, part of the MLB Greening Program, will be the largest in-stadium solar array in Major League Baseball. Kansas City Power and Light installed a 28.8 kilowatt solar array on the roof of Kauffman Stadium, which will produce 36,000 kWh of renewable energy each year.

This addition is the first step in a long-term partnership between the Royals and KCPL to maximize renewable energy resources at Kauffman Stadium.
While Kansas City’s solar array will be the biggest in the league, they are not the only MLB team to add panels to their stadium. The Cardinals added solar panels to Busch Stadium this year, and other teams have made renovations to their ballparks in an effort to go green.

The Royals, currently in the middle of a league worst 10 game losing streak, will wrap up its series with Toronto today at 7:10 p.m.

Royals Losing Streak Reaches 10 Games - Kansas City News

After starting the season with a lot of promise, the Royals have hit rock bottom. Kansas City lost its 10th straight game today, falling 5-3 to Toronto. With the loss, Kansas City fell to 3-12 on the season.

Out of all the losses during the losing streak, today's game might have been the best summary as to why Kansas City is off to a terrible start. The offense couldn't generate runs. Danny Duffy threw good pitches, but got rocked in the 5th inning and took his second loss of the season. Kansas City allowed Brett Lawrie to steal home. The Royals went a paltry 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. The team got two runners on in the bottom of the ninth with only one out, and Bryan Pena hit into a game ending double play. The list goes on and on, but the point remains - this team is playing terrible baseball right now. Kansas City is hosting the 2012 All-Star game, which has allowed Kansas City to receive more regional and national attention than normal. Unfortunately, the team has only made its negative stigma worse this season.

Kansas City will try to salvage a win in the last game of the series tomorrow, which takes place at 7:10 p.m. Bruce Chen (0-1) will get the start for the Royals, while Brandon Morrow (0-1) will start for Toronto. The Royals will start a series with the Indians in Cleveland on Tuesday.
