DUI Checkpoints July 27th, 28th Weekend Kansas City News

It's the weekend, baby! KCPD will be setting up DUI checkpoints in Kansas City at random locations once again this weekend, July 27th and July 28th. Beware of all of the usual sobriety checkpoints and also some new ones. But, as always, here at KCMB News we advise that you take the fear out of running into one of these roadblocks and just take a cab, or have a designated driver. Once again kids, the legal limit for DUI or DWI charges is .08 in Missouri and in Kansas. This level can be achieved by consuming more than one standard drink of alcohol per hour and then getting behind the wheel. Obviously for females, this amount can be lower, and for heavy drinkers, this number could be higher.

There will be DUI checkpoints in Kansas City this weekend so beware of the usual spots:

ANYWHERE along Ward Parkway, most often at the junction of 77th street where the road splits and goes into Kansas.

ANYWHERE along Southwest Trafficway, most notably anywhere near Westport.  Their favorite place to set up a DUI checkpoint in Westport is right on Southwest Trafficway near the stoplight that turns into the Sunfresh.

Other hot spots include the Waldo area, around 77th and Wornall, where they have recently upped the amount of DUI checkpoints that they set up due to the addition of The Well, a new popular Waldo bar. Additionally, the KCPD likes to set up roadblocks at the 93rd block of Wornall Road.

Stay safe out there this weekend Kansas City, there are several great cab companies, limo services and car services out there to help you avoid getting into trouble.

KCPD Involved in Standoff and Eventually Shooting of Dan Walsh by Kansas City News

Sunday afternoon around 3pm Kansas City Police reported to the home of Dan Walsh in south Kansas City to investigate a situation involving a firearm. When police arrived at the home of Dan Walsh (58), he came outside holding a handgun, fired off a round and then returned inside the home. Police quickly escalated the operation by bringing in several squad cars and some SWAT members armed and taking aim at the man's home. The street was closed down temporarily and the KCPD quickly got into position to fire upon the house if necessary.

After about 20 minutes of trying to reason with the home owner, the man finally emerged from his house again, this time brandishing a rifle. This time the police were shouting at the man to "DROP THE GUN!", when the man didn't comply and instead ran into his neighbor's front yard police opened fire. Police later told the press that Dan had actually pointed his rifle at the policemen. Kansas City police shot 3 times and killed Dan Walsh in the neighbor's yard and he immediately fell to the ground. As Walsh was being loaded into an ambulance police told neighbors that Dan's "injuries were not life threatening", but they obviously knew that they had shot and killed him. According to our interview with close neighbors, he was shot to death immediately in his neighbor's yard, as he fell to ground instantly and did not move at all after he went down.

Dan Walsh was a very inspired man who enjoyed his family and friends and had plans to move to Mexico to enjoy his retirement with his wife. Dan was active on Ebay selling slot cars and had over 8,000 positive feedbacks. In the 80's and 90's Dan remodeled houses and worked on several houses in his neighborhood. Walsh was also an excellent basketball player and all around athlete. He was a devoted father and husband and participated in the Kansas City community in several ways including being a soccer coach for a local sports team. Dan lived life to the fullest every day that he was alive and he will be missed by all.

DUI Checkpoints Kansas City January 6th, 7th

Kansas City police will set up random DUI Checkpoints in around the Kansas City area on Friday January 6th and Saturday January 7th looking for drunk drivers among other things. As you may have read, the KCPD can now set up road blocks and checkpoints looking for outstanding warrants, illegal immigrants and drivers driving with suspended licenses as well as setting up DUI checkpoints.

On January 6th and 7th, Kansas City Police will set up random DUI checkpoints in the usual areas including:

Anywhere along Ward Parkway, but especially near the 69th Street split where drivers can choose to go into Kansas or continue on in Missouri. Another popular DUI checkpoint location is around the 77 Street area on Ward Parkway just before the stoplight at 79th Street because this is a blind corner. It is best to just avoid Ward Parkway all together on weekend nights when the checkpoints are set up.

As usual, DUI checkpoints will most likely be set up along Wornall Road, near the Waldo and Brookside areas, specifically at the intersection of 77th Street and Wornall where the KCPD usually sets up post.

Other streets to avoid would be ANYWHERE on Southwest Trafficway, and State Line Road where hungry Mission Hills and Prairie Village Police wait to get money from Missouri drivers. If you have Missouri tags, you are twice as likely to get pulled over by a Kansas police officer while driving down State Line, they want to suck money from Missouri drivers and not from their own precious Kansas drivers. Avoid State Line all together this weekend unless you are south of 103rd Street.

Xpressions Liquor License Revoked

It has been known by many names, "NV", "NRG", and in it's last incarnation, "Xpressions", but no matter what ebonic name they give the nightclub at 220 Admiral Boulevard, the ghetto folk show up...the ghetto folk fight...someone gets shot...and the club gets shut down. Now remember all of you who want to yell RACISM right now, it's not racist if the statement is TRUE...

Here at Kansas City News we're going to start by pointing out something that all of the other Kansas City news sources are afraid to talk about:

Is it possible to create a location or establishment where the black youth can party safely without disturbing surrounding businesses and residents, avoid confrontations and disturbance calls to the KCPD, and avoid shootings and other violence? So far, the answer is no.

Now, here is the million dollar question: Does the problem lie in the environment, i.e. the nightclub, the location, etc.? Or does the problem lie in the fact that young black people lack sophistication and are unable to gather in public without fighting and pulling out guns? Just like many things in life, the answer is probably BOTH. We are certain that a few bad apples can spoil it for the whole bunch, and for that we sympathize, but the fact remains that Kansas City has not been able to keep a black nightclub (age 21+) open not matter where they try to locate it, and no matter how many security guards and police they employ to secure it.

The only black nightclubs that seem to remain open for long periods of time are those who limit the age to 25 and over or in some cases even 35 and over. Now what does this say about what the older black people think about their own youth? They know the situation perfectly well, and that is why they limit their drinking and dancing establishments to 35 years old and over.

One thing that we have to point out here is that most of the altercations begin either inside or immediately outside the nightclub, then they escalate to violence and gun fights in the surrounding parking lots or a few blocks away from the nightclub. Such was the way it went for many of the incidents that allegedly involved Xpressions, NV, and NRG. The most recent problem that Xpressions faced was that new owners Eric and Natasha Union were unable to secure the help of off duty police officers and other security companies because they feared for their own safety. Eric and Natasha Union have not been officially notified of their liquor license revocation, and Xpressions continues to operate, but we don't know for how long.

Obviously, Xpressions owners and their legal staff pulled the race card in a suit against former Kansas City Police Major Gary Majors, claiming that they were discriminated against because they are black. Several black political figures including Councilman Jermaine Reed and Shalonn "Kiki" Curls attempted to get involved in the case, but were laughed off the stand when it was discovered that Xpressions nightclub was not even located in either of the black politician's districts.

Woman Shot and Killed by Police in Kansas City

In a bizarre incident, Kansas City Police shot and killed what they described as a white woman in her 20's or early 30's this morning in the 5800 block of Manchester Ave. That's near I-435 and 350 Hwy on the east side. It all started when a woman called 911 to report that another woman (the now dead one) showed up at her house with an assault rifle and woke her up telling her to "get out". As she fled her home, she heard four or five shots. Police responded to the scene and the woman pointed an assault rifle at officers. KCPD responded with at least one shot.

Suicide by cop? Love triangle? Lover's quarrel? Time will tell, but it is a strange story that Police are trying to piece details together. Police will only say that the two women knew each other, but won't say how. There was a picture of the suspect inside the victim's home though.

One thing is for sure - you point an assault rifle at the Police, they will shoot you. Everytime.

Kansas City Man Loses Hand to Homemade Firework

I've had some stupid fucking friends over the years, but luckily none as idiotic as a Northland Man's who had his right hand nearly blown off on Sunday night. It seems three young men were gathered in a Kansas City North Apartment when one fellow decided to light a homemade firework and drop it on the floor of the living room.

The Apartment renter, fearing certain loss of security deposit, attempted to retrieve the explosive and throw it out the window. It exploded in his hand causing gruesome, and probably debilitating lifelong injury. Really, it's not funny, but how could you be so stupid as to light an explosive in a man's living room. Excessive alcohol was no doubt involved.

KCPD is still investigating the incident and no charges have been filed.

Kansas City Priest Charged With Child Pornography

Kansas City Priest Shawn Francis Ratigan was arrested Wednesday on child pornography charges. Ratigan was charged with three counts of possessing child porn and is being held on $200,000 bond. Authorities allege that Father Ratigan took photos of young girls in and around the churches and schools that he worked. He was at St Patrick's in Kansas City North for about a year, and at St Mary's in St Joseph, MO before that.

Back in December, a computer repair technician discovered suspect images on his laptop and alerted church officials. At that time Bishop Robert Finn contacted a Kansas City Police officer and described "a single image of a young naked girl...nothing of a sexual nature" and asked if it was pornography. The officer replied that is was not, but never saw the image or was told that there were others. This information is according to Kansas City Police Captain Steve Young.

The day after the discovery of the images, Father Ratigan attempted suicide and was hospitalized for psychiatric care. Finn also restricted Ratigan's actions, including ordering him to stay away from children and events where children might be present. In March, Bishop Finn discovered that Ratigan had attended a child's birthday party and a St Patrick's Day parade. Soon after, a higher church official had contacted police to provide them with the images that were originally found on Ratigan's computer. KCPD conducted an investigation and uncovered more pictures.

As Parishiners learned of Father Ratigan's arrest, their concern spread. Some wanted to know why it took so long to turn over eveidence to the Police. Poor judgement on the behalf of church officials once again causes embarrassment for a Catholic church that continues to not learn from it's past mistakes. What is it about the priesthood that attracts men who like to engage in deviant sexual behavior and those who will cover up the acts?

Father Ratigan will likely get his punishment at the hands of other convicts in prison. Even cold blooded killers don't like child abusers, especially hypocritical ones. It's no wonder religion is on the decline in this country with stories like Father Ratigan's and this nut.

Kansas City Police Dog Attacks Bystander

A 56 year old woman was attacked by a Police dog Sunday afternoon. The woman saw Police activity outside her home in the 4300 block of Chelsea Ave in Kansas City and came outside to see what was going on. She was on the phone with her daughter at the time, and the dog must have heard her talking. The next thing you know, the dog pulls the leash out of the officers hand and attacked the woman. She suffered bites to her head and buttocks. The woman already had a fear of dogs and said she wouldn't have come outside had she known the dog was there.

Police in the area were searching for a gun used in a robbery - a magazine had already been found nearby. The handler had the dog on a long leash and had the choke collar inactive as is customary when no suspects are nearby. The Police Officer, not expecting the dog to react in that way, was not gripping the leash tight enough.

It's a shame that something like this happened. Police dogs are very important to the Department, and I would hate to have an incident like this diminish their role in the Department. The woman will likely win a large settlement and Police will review policies and procedures in the handling of their dogs. The KCPD said that handlers have been bitten over the years, but the last time a KC Police dog bit a bystander was in the early 90s when a man leaned over the top of the dog while some children were petting him. Hopefully the next incident will be decades away as well.

Today the KCPD released it's list of the top 20 accident sites in the Kansas City area.  The police department kept a running tab on how many wrecks happened at each site - check to see which ones are closest to your neighborhood:

The first place honor goes to N. Flintlock and 152 Highway in Pleasant Valley where I-35 meets up with I-435.  This site racked up 73 total car crashes in 2010.  Second place goes to E. Front Street and I-435, yet another North location totalling 66 wrecks.  Third place went to N. Church Rd. and 152 Highway, yet ANOTHER Northern location.  Sounds like the folks living up North need to take some driving classes.

As we mentioned earlier in our article about Kansas City DUI Checkpoints, the Kansas City Police Department have made no secrets about the fact that they will be out in force pretty much every weekend conducting checkpoints.

Due to a grant from the Federal Government which was put in place to weed out those driving with suspended licenses or outstanding warrants which most likely stemmed from a fatal car accident that claimed the life of a 12 year old boy on 71 highway (the ghetto highway) and Gregory that involved Clayton R. Dunlap and Damian Slayton, KCPD is now conducting more DUI checkpoints in Kansas City than ever before.  The leftover funding from this grant is now going towards putting up DUI checkpoints pretty much every weekend in Kansas City.

Again, for Labor Day weekend including September 5th and 6th, the most likely dui checkpoint areas in Kansas City will be 77th and Wornall, anywhere on Southwest Trafficway, on Ward Parkway where it splits off into Kansas at 77th Street or where Ward Parkway merges with Wornall Road around 93rd Street.  Avoid Westport all together as it is swarming with ghetto thugs riding around in their stolen cars with "temporary tags" and playing idiotic boom boom music.

Does someone have to be murdered in Kansas City in order for the Kansas City police to turn over any pertinant crime details to the Kansas City detectives? After living here for most of 30 years, my friends and I have been the victims of countless crimes. No big deal for the most part, the occasional robbery, car theft, assault, etc.

Here's the thing:

The police show up, write up a report, and then split.

Is it no longer the job of the Kansas City police department to INVESTIGATE crimes? I mean seriously, I've had fingerprints, shoe prints, tire prints, friggin DNA samples, everything in the book on those who have broken into my house or car and the police just IGNORE this and dismiss the evidence completely.

Ok, so my question is, what level of severity does a crime have to be before the Kansas City police turn over a crime to the Kansas City detectives? Do the KCPD detectives only investigate murders? I understand that the "beat cops" that are on patrol are mostly simpletons and cannot initiate an investigation, but can they at least turn the facts over to the detectives?

A good policeman friend of mine once told me that if I'm ever robbed while at home to "shoot him and drag him in front of your front door". I think that may be my only recourse. Good advice :)

DUI Checkpoints after Chiefs Games

Heading southbound on I-435 after a KC Chiefs game is quite an experience. The cars move in and out of lanes with sloppy, sudden movements - and most everyone is going about 15 mph under the speed limit. Basically, everyone is wasted - and driving. Although I've never seen any serious wrecks, or have really never heard about any serious problems with the post-game drunken parade - it seemed curious that there is never a DUI checkpoint set up by Kansas City Police.

After speaking to a few Kansas City residents about this phenomenon, we told that the KCPD attempted a DUI checkpoint after a Chiefs game a couple of seasons ago. The KCPD set up a DUI checkpoint on Southbound 435 and immediately backed up traffic on the major highway for almost 17 miles! Just imagine being a trucker heading to your destination and having to sit through 17 miles of parking lot gridlock. The results of the DUI checkpoint were astounding. After stopping over 4000 vehicles, only 7 arrests were made.
