Gorillas Escape From Kansas City Zoo

Run for your lives! Just kidding, the two 19 year old gorillas that escaped from the Kansas City Zoo have been returned to their cages.

On Sunday, February 19th, two full grown gorillas named Ntondo and Mbundi found that the door to their enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo had been left open, allowing them to escape and wander around freely for a short period of time. When it was discovered that the gorillas had escaped from their enclosure, zoo officials and staff rushed zoo patrons into a safe area temporarily while the gorillas were gathered and "guided" back to their enclosure with the use of water hoses. While no one was threatened or injured, news of the gorillas escape sent shock waves throughout the zoo and it's staff and patrons on Sunday.

Randy Wisthoff, director of The Kansas City Zoo said that disciplinary measures would be taken once they find out who was responsible for leaving the door open to the gorilla enclosure. An investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture and the American Zoo and Aquarium association will be held as a matter of standard procedure. Since no one was injured or threatened, and the gorillas were quickly contained, the zoo will most likely continue to operate as normal.

Ah, there's nothing like a small taste of freedom, and I'm sure that the gorillas Ntondo and Mbundi had a great time for the few minutes that they were out and about at the zoo. I would imagine that it would have been much harder to capture and contain a tiger or a lion, so since it was only 2 full grown and well trained gorillas that escaped on Sunday everyone should consider themselves fortunate in this case. Since most animals in the zoo are very well taken care of and fed, most probably would not even pose much of a threat to humans, unless of course they were provoked, which we at Kansas City News would certainly not attempt!

The two gorillas that escaped from The Kansas City Zoo were estimated to have weighed about 400 pounds each.

Kansas City Zoo Offering Free Admission To Kansas City Residents

Once again this year, The Kansas City Zoo will be offering free admission to Kansas City, MO residents for the entire month of October and November. The deal is good any day during normal business hours. You need to provide a photo identification, and proof of residency consisting of utility bill, credit card bill, or some other official correspondence. Normal hours are 9:30AM - 4:00PM on weekdays, and weekends the Zoo closes at 5:00PM.

For those of you who have not been to the Kansas City Zoo lately, they have made lots of improvements in the last several years. The most recent of which is the Polar Bear Passage - a state of the Art Polar Bear Exhibit that houses "Nikita", a three year old male. It has a large chilled water pool for swimming and observation areas from three angles. Pretty cool.

The Africa region of the Zoo is excellent also, in fact it was rated #1 in the country according to "America's Best Zoos 2008". The African Exhibit is 95 acres and represents animals from 5 countries. It includes quite a large family of Chimpanzees, a gorilla, an african plains exhibit that houses Zebras, Giraffes and others.

I highly recommend our city's zoo, if you like it, come back again - you can get an annual zoo membership for $79 - this incudes FREE admission for your whole family for an entire year. Normal admission prices are $11.50 for adults, and $8.50 for kids over 3. For other Kansas City Events and things to do click here.

Kansas City Zoo Meerkat Mystery Solved

Jacob Bradley and Justin Santhuff thought they were going to the Kansas City Zoo to steal a cuddly, unique pet. On November 4th, the two knuckleheads went to the Zoo with a stroller and a cage hidden under the blanket. Santhuff allegedly jumped into the open air Meerkat exhibit in the Africa section of the Zoo and grabbed one of the Meerkats. They put it in the cage and pushed it out of the Zoo. Mission Accomplished.

Problem is, of course, Meerkats are wild animals and don't make good pets as our fine young Kansas Citians soon discovered. On the way home, Santhuff appenrently made a comment about how cute the little guy was and was promptly bitten harshly on the finger. The fellows took the Meerkat to the Trailer Park (big suprise) where they lived and kept it in a glass aquarium. They fed it cat food, but soon realized what smelly little bastards Meerkats are. They dropped the little guy off at an area pet store - the pet shop notified the Zoo - and the Meerkat was home.

These two morons probably would have gotten away with it if they hadn't bragged about it on the Facebook page (as you do). They now sit in Jail under a $5000 bond each. Both are charged with one count of Felony Theft.

Jazzoo 2012 Charity Event Kansas City News

Tonight thousands of supporters will invade the Kansas City Zoo wearing custom tuxedos, sampling exquisite cuisine from over 65 local Kansas City restaurants, enjoying designer cocktails and donating to a wonderful cause, the animals at The Kansas City Zoo.  Kansas City's largest charity event, Jazzoo 2012, actually ranks among the top ten charity events in the entire United States.  Last year, in 2011, this Kansas City charity event raised over $800,000.  Tickets are $175.00 each, and can be purchased online at the Kansas City Zoo's website.

Jazzoo 2012 Kansas City fundraiser will feature live music by Ida McBeth, Dr. Zhivegas, Dolewite and several other Kansas City bands provided by Adam Blue Productions.  Jazzoo 2012 will begin at 6:30pm with a patrons only "happy hour" and then the main gates will open at 7:30pm.  Jazzoo 2012 will be open until 12am. There will be 10 specialty bars set up throughout the Kansas City Zoo at different locations.

The dress code for Jazzoo 2012 is what makes this Kansas City charity event so special.  The dress code is known as "creative black tie". No jeans are allowed, but you can get pretty creative with your tuxedo or evening gown. See the picture above for an example, Jazzoo is a very unique experience as the guests will be donning very entertaining costumes.

All of the benefits of Jazzoo 2012 go towards the animals of the Kansas City Zoo, and this year, in particular, the "extreme makeover" of the Tiger display area. Several different ticket package options are also available including single tickets at $175.00 each and several corporate packages are also available if you would like to bring your entire company out to Jazzoo 2012.  In the past few years the weather has ranged from extremely hot to rainy, but this year it looks like the weather will be ideal as we are experiencing a cool weather patch in Kansas City. So come out tonight and spend the evening wandering around the Kansas City Zoo, eating great food, drinking a cool beverage or two, listening to some great live music and supporting the animals at Jazzoo 2012.

Fireworks Display Overland Park Leawood by Kansas City News

The skies will be POPPIN' on Wednesday night, as the 4th of July fireworks in Overland Park, Leawood and Kansas City explode into the night at various different fireworks displays in Kansas City, Overland Park, Leawood and there will even be some great 4th of July events at The Kansas City Zoo during the day.

Visit 2013 Fireworks Displays

We will start with the daytime activities for the 4th of July in Kansas City:

Red, White and ZOO!
You can kick off your 4th of July celebration early at The Kansas City Zoo. On July 4, admission is free for all active and retired military personnel with a valid ID. Families of active and retired military personnel will receive $1 off the regular Zoo admission fee. Come visit Nikita the polar bear as he backflips in his cold water pool, or see our African plains exhibit from a new angle when you take our Sky Safari! With more than 1000 animals and 200 acres of land, the Zoo offers ample opportunities to create unforgettable holiday memories. The Kansas City Zoo will be open regular business hours on the 4th of July so bring the kids and come on out!

The City of Overland Park Fireworks Display - Star Spangled Spectacular
Overland Park will kick the 4th of July festivities off with their fabulous fireworks display at 9:30pm. The day begins at 4pm at Corporate Woods in Overland Park, Kansas with food, beverages, beer and activities for the kids. After that they will have a US Citizen's Naturalization Ceremony.  We're not sure what the purpose of that will be, but we're going to have to assume that it has to do with the increasing number of immigrants in the Olathe area in Johnson County. This ceremony seems a little "forced" if you ask us. But then again, all you have to do is visit your nearest Johnson County DMV and you will understand what the reasoning behind this "ceremony" might be - mostly because you will have to PUSH 1 FOR ENGLISH on the computer screen when you sign in.  It is appalling that the City of Overland Park would force everyone who came out to see the fireworks display to witness this Naturalization Ceremony, especially on our Nation's birthday. Congressman Kevin Yoder (R) will also make an appearance and do the official welcome.

The City of Leawood Fireworks Display and 4th of July Activities
The City of Leawood and their marvelous fireworks display will immediately follow the Overland Park fireworks display at 9:45pm. There will be plenty for all to do at the 2012 Leawood Fireworks Display as the gates will open at 5pm and will feature activities and food vendors for the kids and parents alike. At 7:30pm they will feature live music by Kansas City band The Shanks, produced by Adam Blue Productions. Please be aware that the Leawood City Park will be closed to all traffic for the entire day of the 4th of July, and that there will be a shuttle that will transport folks to the festivities from parking lots along Tomahawk Creek Parkway.
