Kansas City Police Detective Cited for DUI

Late last Friday night a Kansas City Internal Affairs police detective was involved in a one car accident north of the river. She was driving an unmarked Police cruiser at the time. Internal Affairs detectives are probably not the most popular members of the force in the eyes of the rank and file cop on the street. I would suspect a few similar situations have been swept under the rug for other Kansas City Police officers. It has been reported that the detective was on call at the time of the DUI violation. I have a feeling this could be detrimental to the young detective's career.

Brett Favre Returns...Again

Bookmark and Share
Brett Favre finally announced that he will be returning to the Minnesota Vikings this season, after flip-flopping back and forth numerous times as to whether or not he would rejoin the team. Favre's announcement may be surprising to some, considering just two weeks ago he announced he would not return, after saying he was unsure the majority of the summer.

While Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game, the drama over his announcements is getting old. Favre's reputation has gone from one of the toughest and grittiest quarterbacks in the league to a spoiled, me-first prima donna.

Then again, can we really blame Favre for taking time to make an important decision. Perhaps his ankle really did need to get cleared, and it is possible he really does struggle with deciding to come back or not. Mostly, ESPN and other sports media outlets are to blame for the circus that surrounds Favre every year. ESPN even had camera crews stalking the quarterback to and from the airport. Favre's penchant for drama doesn't help, but the reason we get sick of Favre reports every year are mostly due to ESPN and other sports outlets shoving the coverage down our throats.

Border War TIckets Now on Sale

Tickets for the fourth annual Border War are now open to the public. The tickets became available yesterday morning at around 10 a.m., with many KU and MU fans gobbling up tickets as soon as they became available.

The game will be fourth installment of the series to be played at Arrowhead Stadium. After being met with criticism and skepticism from both KU and MU fans and officials, the rivalry game has been a huge success. All three games have been nail-biters decided in the final seconds, and the revenue and turnout for all three contests has exceeded expectations.

Fans can purchase tickets to the KU / MU Border War at Arrowhead Stadium by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, online at www.ticketmaster.com/bordershowdown or by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. Tickets are also available for purchase through Missouri by calling 800-228-7297 or Kansas at 800-344-2957.

PGA Championship Ends in Controversy

Sunday's thrilling end to the PGA championship featured a turn of events that some are calling the most controversial golf ruling in years. Dustin Johnson, who had rallied from behind to take a one-stroke lead, touched his club head down into a "bunker" on the last hole (a penalty) and thus missed out participating in a playoff.

Martin Kaymer ended up winning the event, defeating Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff to earn his first major. However, the German's victory will forever he overshadowed by the ruling on Johnson. Most golf fans and analysts seem to be split on their opinion of the ruling. Many defend the golf officials for making the correct ruling and following the guidelines in the official rulebook, citing that Johnson was in a bunker.

The only problem with this logic, however, is the "bunker" Johnson was hitting out of didn't appear to be a bunker at all. It was more dirt than sand, and was out of bounds. Further, spectators had walked through it all day long which made it appear less of a sand trap. Johnson is a professional golfer who obviously plays the game constantly. If he doesn't think what he is hitting the ball out of is a bunker, isn't there a problem here? I'm not blaming golf officials for enforcing the rule, but the rule itself needs to be carefully examined.

KU's Perkins racks up sky high plane bill

While travel is a necessity for any high-ranking official, University of Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins has done a lot of it. In high style. Reports have been released showing Perkins' travel expenses compared to other athletic officials, showing that Perkins' preference for private planes and expensive travel far exceed the norm for his position.

One glaring example is Perkins' trip to the funeral of deceased former Kansas State quarterback Dylan Meier, older brother of former KU star Kerry Meier. After flying to the funeral, Perkins used a $425 car service while K-State coach Bill Snyder rented a car for $45. Perkins has also taken advantage of KU's private jet and planes belonging to KU boosters.

Perkins has defended his position by citing that time is extremely important to him, and quick travel is a must. While this is certainly the case, his travel expenses compared to other athletic directors is shocking. While KU has one of the most profitable athletic departments in the country, and Perkins has had a lot to do with that, it doesn't mean the extra funds need be spent on luxurious travel. Perkins did some great things for Kansas, unfortunately these new reports may diminish his legacy.
