Center High School Greenhouse Kansas City

Center High School, with the help of volunteers, recently got together and decided to turn an abandoned greenhouse that sat decaying behind the school for years into a functioning greenhouse where the children can learn about horticulture and the human experience with plant life. The greenhouse is a great project as most students at the urban Center High School will benefit from participating in something besides playing X Box, eating McDonald's and listening to nasty rap music.

Center School District principal Elizabeth Heide and outside volunteer Durwin Rice began making arrangements 4 years ago to restore the old abandoned greenhouse when they were working together on the Tulips on Troost Project. The Tulips on Troost Project is a community participation project that plants tulips along Troost, a street in Kansas City that is deep in the ghetto and desperately needs some polishing, and this organization has plans to plant one million tulips along the urban street. The project has made excellent progress and now it has led to another great project with the greenhouse at Center High School.

Once a prominent high school in Kansas City, Center High School is now a completely urban, primarily minority attended school. Despite what most people thought initially, Center High School is NOT part of the failing and discredited Kansas City School District, it just resembles the schools in the Kansas City School District when you look at it's student body. Center High School was a quality high school from the time it opened until about 1989. During it's glory days, Center High School drew students from the wealthy upper middle class who resided in Red Bridge, Bridlespur, and even Sante Fe Hills when it used to be a good neighborhood. Paralleled by the decline of these neighborhoods as the ghetto slowly moved it's way south and west, Center High School soon began to look like Central High School and since 1989 it has been primarily an urban, lower class school.

This greenhouse will give the students at Center High School a chance to learn about plant life and how it affects humans and the Earth as a whole, as current economic crisis have prompted many of the world's innovative leaders to start projects that lead American consumers away from the processed foods and "getting back to the farm" by encouraging more Americans to eat more "live" foods that come from local farms and to stay away from the processed foods and fast food that has made our country extremely obese and unhealthy.

To assist in the greenhouse project at Center High School, contact principal Elizabeth Heide for more information.

The All Star Game is a 3 day event that includes a 5K run for charity, the famous home run derby, and of course the 2012 All Star Game itself. Kansas City's newly renovated stadium allowed them to have a shot at hosting the 2012 All Star Game, and it should prove to be very profitable for the Kansas City area and local Kansas City businesses. The All Star game has become much more important since 2011 as it now decides the location of the home field for the World Series. Kansas City is very excited to be hosting the 2012 MLB All Star Game and the Schedule for the 2012 MLB All Star game is as follows:

Romeo Crennel Hired as Head Coach of the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs hired Romeo Crennel as their head coach after the interim coach brought home 2 wins out of 3 during his short tenure as interim coach. Romeo Crennel was head coach when the Chiefs beat the Green Bay Packers, relieving them of their perfect season in week 15.

Romeo Crennel was extremely unsuccessful at his only other head coaching position with the Cleveland Browns, posting an unimpressive record of 24 and 40. Crennel is a great defensive coordinator, but he has proven that he is no head coach. The Chiefs should have left Crennel at defensive coordinator, which he excels at, and hired a new head coach who possibly had a more offensive mind. None of these things will matter, however, unless the owners of the Chiefs spend some money to get some real players in here, which we all know will never happen.

As we at Kansas City News pointed out weeks ago, the hiring of the head coach was the least important thing on the Chiefs to-do list. The Chiefs owners need to put up money first and foremost - that's it. Without some marquis players on the team, The Chiefs will have as much chance of winning a playoff game as the Royals, who are in the same position - no money spent on players, just put in the pockets of the owners. If the Chiefs actually did put up some money for some quality players, then the next thing that we need to acquire is a decent offensive line. Don't even think about a quarterback until you have secured a competitive offensive line. After the 0-line is secured, then we can start thinking about a real quarterback, not some old hack qb that can barely move around in the pocket like Orton. Orton was just a grasp at desperation, and Matt Cassel is nothing more than a high paid back up quarterback.

Although getting a new head coach was on the list for The Kansas City Chiefs, it was definitely not one of the high priorities. The Indianapolis Colts proved for over 10 years that you don't need a head coach to win, Peyton Manning and a great offensive line is how you win games. Their head coach didn't do ANYTHING but stand on the sidelines and work for a very low salary. Let's see if the Chiefs put up money to build an offensive line and go out and get a real quarterback before we even worry about what impact Romeo Crennel will make.

Alyssa Bustamante Pleads Guilty to Murder of Elizabeth Olten

Alyssa Bustamante pleads guilty of the murder of 9 year old neighbor Elizabeth Olten. In one of the most appalling cases of 2009, Alyssa Bustamante admitted to police that she slit Elizabeth Olten's throat and then strangled her to death "just to see what it felt like".

Bustamante murdered her neighbor on October 21st, 2009 and has been awaiting trial ever since, in the meantime being evaluated by psychiatrists and other medical professionals on whether or not she would stand trial as an adult in the murder case. It was determined that Alyssa was performing in the top 3rd of her class in the small hick town school in St. Martins, Missouri - which isn't saying much. Alyssa was constantly seeking attention both in public and on Facebook, acting out, wearing provocative clothing often bearing some clever remark or skulls. She was the typical garden variety small town emo girl, black painted fingernails, punk rock hair, and she claimed that she wanted to start a band called the "penile projectiles", referencing her complete knowledge of sex, probably having had it several times with friends and/or family.

Alyssa Bustamante had been in the custody of her grandmother since she was 7 years old as her Mexican father was busy serving 3 consecutive sentences for assault, one of those involving a knife, which was Alyssa's weapon of choice which until October 21st, 2009, she had only used on herself for "cutting", another classic attention getting device. Initially, a judge had entered a plea of not guilty on Bustamante's behalf, but today she came forward and entered a plea of guilty.

Due to Alyssa Bustamante's complete lack of remorse and the incredible "I did it to see what it would feel like" comment made to police, she will likely spend the rest of her life in prison, or at least we hope so.

DUI Checkpoints Kansas City January 6th, 7th

Kansas City police will set up random DUI Checkpoints in around the Kansas City area on Friday January 6th and Saturday January 7th looking for drunk drivers among other things. As you may have read, the KCPD can now set up road blocks and checkpoints looking for outstanding warrants, illegal immigrants and drivers driving with suspended licenses as well as setting up DUI checkpoints.

On January 6th and 7th, Kansas City Police will set up random DUI checkpoints in the usual areas including:

Anywhere along Ward Parkway, but especially near the 69th Street split where drivers can choose to go into Kansas or continue on in Missouri. Another popular DUI checkpoint location is around the 77 Street area on Ward Parkway just before the stoplight at 79th Street because this is a blind corner. It is best to just avoid Ward Parkway all together on weekend nights when the checkpoints are set up.

As usual, DUI checkpoints will most likely be set up along Wornall Road, near the Waldo and Brookside areas, specifically at the intersection of 77th Street and Wornall where the KCPD usually sets up post.

Other streets to avoid would be ANYWHERE on Southwest Trafficway, and State Line Road where hungry Mission Hills and Prairie Village Police wait to get money from Missouri drivers. If you have Missouri tags, you are twice as likely to get pulled over by a Kansas police officer while driving down State Line, they want to suck money from Missouri drivers and not from their own precious Kansas drivers. Avoid State Line all together this weekend unless you are south of 103rd Street.
