Former Royal Melky Cabrera Leads NL To Win In 2012 MLB All Star Game

If you are a Kansas City Royals fan, you have probably gotten used to seeing talented players leave the team and find success elsewhere. Last night, we once again witnessed the same old story, as former Royal Melky Cabrera had a huge game and won MVP honors while leading the NL to a 8-0 victory over the AL.

Cabrera had a good year for the Royals last year, and has been on fire this season. This year, he has a .353 batting average, 44 RBI and a league-leading 119 hits. The player he was traded for, pitcher Jonathan Sanchez, is 1-5 with a 6.75 ERA. So far, it appears that once again, the Royals' front office was outdone, and Kansas City fans have to watch another all star-caliber player find greener pastures elsewhere.

The game itself wasn't much of a competition. Pablo Sandoval broke the game open with a three-run triple in the first inning, and the NL never looked back. Sandoval and Cabrera teamed up to supply the majority of the NL's offense, while pitcher Matt Cain was on his game - giving the San Francisco Giants a looming presence in the event.

The Royals will be back in action this Friday, July 13, when they start a home series with the Chicago White Sox. The game will mark the beginning of a ten game home stand for Kansas City, which also features series against the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels.

Prince Fielder Wins 2012 MLB Home Run Derby

Prince Fielder joined Ken Griffey Jr. as the only players to win multiple Home Run Derby titles, winning his second by beating Toronto’s Jose Bautista 12-7 in the final. Fielder sent eight balls into the fountains of Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium, finishing with a total of 28 homers over three rounds.

Fielder also owned four of the longest drives of the evening, including two blasts that measured 476 feet. His total of 28 is five better than the 23 he hit in route to his first Home Run Derby title back in 2007, which took place in St. Louis. Mark Trumbo finished third, tying Bautista in the second round but losing 2-1 in a swingoff. Carlos Beltran, who received the majority of the fans’ support due to his days as a Royal, was eliminated in the second round as well. Carlos Gonzalez, Andrew McCutchen and Matt Kemp were all eliminated in the first round.

Apart from Fielder’s victory, the highlight of the night was the fans’ reaction to Robinson Cano. Cano had promised to select a Royal for his team, and then failed to follow up. Kansas City fans were rightfully upset that they couldn’t watch one of their hometown players participate, and showered the Yankee with loud boos all night. It appears that the hostility got to Cano, as he went homerless just one year after winning the event with 32 home runs overall. By hanging a bagel on the scoreboard, Cano became the first Home Run Derby participant since Brandon Inge in 2009 to fair to hit a home run.

The 2012 MLB All Star game will take place tonight in Kansas City. It has just been announced that Justin Verlander will start for the AL, while Matt Cain will start for the NL.

Bill Self Booed Off the Field at 2012 Celebrity Softball Game

Everything was as it should have been on Sunday night at the K for the 2012 Celebrity Softball Game. The only standing ovation of the entire night was when George Brett came to the plate for his turn at bat. The King of Kauffman Stadium got the ovation that he deserved and it was an honor to be present to witness Brett take his batting stance once again. In an opposite reaction, Bill Self, head coach of the KU Jayhawks, was practically booed off of the field. Why Bill Self was even in the game is a mystery as he is certainly no celebrity, but the crowd really let him have it when his name was announced, and they continued to boo him down to the ground EVERY time he came to bat. He tried to kind of smile it off, but it must have been quite humiliating to be booed so viciously by a sold out Kauffman Stadium that night, but he had no business being out there in the first place, so justice was swiftly served by the true blue Kansas City Royals fans. Other players such as former MVP and World Champion Steve Garvey, got literally no reaction at all, dead air! Other celebrities who received silent welcomes were model Chrissy Teigen, and the lackluster Haley Reinhart from the insidious American Idol, who got absolutely no reaction at all. For some reason they also stacked both of these incompetent girls on the American League's side, and the only girl on the National League's team was a professional softball player Jennie Finch - now how is that fair? Oh well, it was all in good fun, and a lot of fun we had.

Our seats are directly behind home plate, and it was great to see such a magnificent selection of baseball heroes march past us as they took the plate, swung the bat and even played tricks on each other. At one point in the game while pitching against Dave Winfield, several players came to the mound and continued to pour Gatorade all over the ball before they pitched it. The 2012 Celebrity Softball game was a high scoring affair with a lot of home runs and a lot of hideous base running.

George Brett at bat 2012 Celebrity Softball Game
It will probably be the last time the fans at Kauffman Stadium will see George Brett take his famous left handed stance in the batter's box, and we were honored to be a part of the event. George Brett will likely never be surpassed as the greatest Kansas City Royals player that has ever lived. Brett even took the mound towards the middle of the game for the American League, which was great. Perhaps the crowd at Kauffman Stadium should have withheld their boos when Bill Self came to bat because it got his "feathers" all ruffled up (haha) and he went and hit a home run over the little fence that they had put up in the short outfield.

The night ended with a spectacular fireworks display and it was a perfect ending to a wonderful night. Stay tuned to KCMB News online as we will be posting a video of Bill Self getting booed after the game airs tonight on ESPN at 9pm.

A Preview Of Tonight's Home Run Derby

The 2012 MLB All Star festivities are in full swing, and tonight fans will get to watch their favorite sluggers battle it out in the annual State Farm Home Run Derby. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium.

Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder, Jose Bautista and Mark Trumbo will represent the American League and Matt Kemp, Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Beltran and Andrew McCutchen represent the National League team.

Each player will hit balls off of a practice pitcher of their choice. Contestants will get 10 outs per round, which is any swing that doesn't result in a home run. The top four homer hitters move on to the second round and the players with the two top combined totals for rounds one and two advancing to the finals.

Following last year’s format, the Derby will be a charity competition between the two leagues. Each team's captain has selected a charity, with $150,000 going to the winning team's charity and $100,000 going to the Boys & Girls Club of America. The losing team's charity will receive $25,000. All remaining charity money generated by the Home Run Derby will go to the BGCA. When a player gets to nine outs, a Gold Ball will be put in play. For each Gold Ball home run, State Farm and MLB will donate $18,000 to designated charities. State Farm will also donate an additional $3,000 for every non-Gold Ball home run hit throughout the Derby. Last year, the Derby raised $603,000 for charity.

This year’s event will also allow players and fans to interact with one another during the derby. Social media stations have been set up for both teams to use, and players will be using Twitter to share their personal thoughts, photos and videos from the competition.

Royals fans will have the opportunity to see Beltran play once again in Kansas City. The former Royal spent his first six and a half seasons in the Major Leagues playing his home games at Kauffman Stadium, so tonight should be a homecoming of sorts for the slugger.

Royals Swept By Tigers

The Royals bats disappeared at the wrong time, and Kansas City wound up getting swept by the Detroit Tigers in the team's final series before the 2012 MLB All Star game.

Apart from a spirited comeback effort in the ninth inning of yesterday's game, the Royals simply failed to consistently muster runs. On Friday, the Royals managed to score only two runs despite finally getting a solid outing from Jonathan Sanchez. On Saturday, the team scored three runs in the ninth in an impressive comeback effort, only to fall 8-7. Today, the bats disappeared again, and Kansas City ended up losing 7-1 in its final game before the all star break.

For the Royals, its recent losing streak came at a very inopportune time. All eyes are on Kansas City with the 2012 MLB All Star game coming to town, and the team had recently pulled within a couple of games of first place and had a .500 record in its sites. The team enters the all star break with a 37-47 record, with an inconsistent offense and a pitching staff decimated by injuries. Hopefully this weekends festivities will get the fans minds off of the current season.
