Dan Marino Fathered Secret Child, Paid Millions To Cover It Up

Dan Marino, Hall of Fame quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, has admitted to fathering a child with a CBS network production assistant and then paying millions of dollars to the woman to keep her quiet. The child, a girl named Chloe, was born back in June of 2005.

Marino, who has been married to his wife Claire for nearly 30 years with whom he has six children, admitted to the affair and cover-up in a written statement to the New York Post. Marino accepted full responsibility for his actions, and that he and Donna Savattere – the woman he had the affair with – mutually agreed to keep the issue private to protect all parties involved. According to Marino, he and Claire are still married.

According to the Post, sources say Marino agreed to pay Savattere millions of dollars to care for Chloe, and to move to Texas to be away from Marino’s family. At this point, it is unknown specifically how much money Marino has paid Savattere.

Marino has been a member of CBS’ The NFL Today pregame show since 2003, and Savattere served as a production assistant with the company in 2005 when the affair took place. Marino is scheduled to be part of the CBS Super Bowl telecast on Sunday, which starts at 1:00 p.m. At this point, CBS has not released a statement regarding Marino’s actions, nor have they announced that Marino will be removed from the Super Bowl coverage.

Why The Chiefs Should Sign Alex Smith

Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers’ former starting quarterback, has asked for his release before the NFL’s free agency period begins on March 12. Smith was enjoying a strong season for the 49ers before being benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick. The Chiefs are rumored to be one of several teams who are interested in pursuing Smith, which makes sense. Signing Smith would be a great move by new general manager John Dorsey.

First, let’s look at Smith. The former top overall pick struggled early in his career, often getting benched and never living up to his lofty draft status. However, over the past few seasons, he has grown into an efficient quarterback who rarely makes a big mistake. In the eight games he played this season, Smith compiled a 104.1 passer rating. Had that held up for an entire season, it would have finished as the third highest rating in the league this past season behind only Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning.

Smith has been labeled by many as a glorified game manager, but that wouldn’t be a bad fit with Kansas City. With the dynamic Jamaal Charles in the prime of his career, the Chiefs should be a run-first team in the near future. Matt Cassel’s turnovers completely derailed the offense last season, and Smith can provide the Chiefs with efficient, mistake-free football.

Many Chiefs fans feel the team should draft a quarterback with its top overall draft pick, but this simply is not a good draft class for quarterbacks. The team could massively upgrade its offensive or defensive line with the firstoverall pick if it gets Smith in free agency, and then decide to draft a quarterback next year or in the later rounds of the draft. Kansas City could also sign Smith and still draft its quarterback of the future. Smith will likely be available for a decent price, and his presence would allow the Chiefs to bring along its new quarterback slowly.

One of the biggest mistakes Scott Pioli made during his reign of terror as Kansas City’s GM was not investing into the quarterback position apart from his initial signing of Matt Cassel. The Chiefs may or may draft their QB of the future in April, but either way, they should sign Alex Smith.

Kansas Defeats West Virginia

The Kansas Jayhawks’ new number one ranking was quickly put to test, as the team got all they wanted from West Virginia in Morgantown last night. Despite blowing a big early lead and some sloppy play, KU hung on to win 61-56. The Jayhawks now have a nation-leading 18 game winning streak, and sit alone in first place in the Big 12 with a 7-0 record.

Kansas was led by Jeff Withey, who had another big game on both ends of the floor. Withey finished with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks, anchoring another stout defensive performance from the Jayhawks. Kansas has held its past six opponents to fewer than 60 points, which has been crucial due to the team’s lack of offensive production.

Early on, it looked like the Jayhawks were on their way to a blowout. KU built a 15 point lead, only to turn the ball over repeatedly and allow the Mountaineers to quickly get back into the game. Kansas had 16 turnovers in the game, and point guard Elijah Johnson once again struggled to put together a consistent performance.

The Jayhawks also struggled from the free throw line, hitting a dismal 18 of 34 attempts. The poor free throw shooting and turnovers wasted a solid shooting night from the floor, as KU hit 54% of the field goals they attempted.

Kansas will be back in action on Saturday, when they host Oklahoma State (13-5, 3-3). West Virginia’s next three games are against the teams that currently sit with the Mountaineers towards the bottom of the conference – Texas Tech, Texas and TCU. WVU will have to find a way to win all three if it wants to get back into the NCAA tournament discussion. The Mountaineers have never missed the big dance under head coach Bob Huggins.

KU Moves To No.1 In Coaches' Poll

After an impressive week in which they defeated Kansas State and Oklahoma and pushed their winning streak to a nation-leading 17 games, the Kansas Jayhawks have moved up to No. 1 in the coaches’ poll. KU is at No. 2 in the Associated Press poll behind Michigan. In both polls, Indiana is ranked third, followed by Florida and Duke.

While the Jayhawks have had several close calls, the team hasn’t dropped a game since losing a close contest to Michigan State early in the season. Last week, KU defeated No. 11 Kansas State on the road and Oklahoma at home. K-State was tied for first with KU when the two teams met, while Oklahoma was tied for second place on Saturday. The wins not only moved the Jayhawks up in the polls, but set KU up with a favorable run towards a ninth straight Big 12 title.

Several other local teams moved in both polls as well. Kansas State followed up its tough loss to KU with a road loss to Iowa State. The Wildcats fell to No. 18 in the AP poll and 21 in the coaches’ poll. Missouri rebounded to No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the coaches’ poll. Wichita State also moved up in both polls, as the Shockers are ranked 15th in the AP poll and 14th in the coaches’ poll.

The Jayhawks will be forced to defend their new ranking immediately, as the team travels to Morgantown to face West Virginia tonight. The Mountaineers are 9-10 this season and 2-4 in Big 12 play, and lost at Oklahoma State on Saturday 80-66.

Quintin O'Dell Admits To Murder Of Alissa Shippert & Assault Of Another Woman In Platte City

Quintin P. O’Dell of Northland has admitted to the killing of Alissa F. Shippert and sexual assault of another woman. By admitting to these crimes and sparing a long criminal trial, O’Dell will avoid the death penalty and be sentenced to life in prison.

O’Dell, who was Shippert’s coworker, attacked and killed the 22-year-old in 2011 along the Platte River area with a hatchet. Shippert and O’Dell were considered to be friends, as both worked at the Casey’s Store in Platte City.

O’Dell also sexually assaulted another woman several months later, disemboweling her with a razor blade. O’Dell slashed the woman’s abdomen in her living room, causing her intestines to fall out. After surviving the attack, the woman was able to identify O’Dell to police. O’Dell had attended high school with the victim.

Prosecutors have yet to determine what the motives were behind O’Dell’s attacks, but he has been put on medication for a bipolar disorder.

Prosecutor Eric Zahnd originally sought the death penalty as a result of O’Dell’s heinous crimes, but the families of the victims did not want to go through a long, drawn out trial that had the possibility of multiple appeals. O’Dell’s murder count carries an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole, and he was also charged with first-degree assault, 100 years each on two counts of armed criminal action and seven years for deviate sexual assault. The sentences will run consecutively, which guarantees that O’Dell will spend the rest of his life in prison.
