Mizzou Rolls Over McNeese State, Washington Arrested Again

Bookmark and Share

Take note Jayhawks, The Missouri Football knows how to handle a cupcake on it's schedule. Saturday evening in Columbia, the Tigers took apart the visiting Cowboys from McNeese State. The Tigers controlled this game from the opening kickoff - beating their Div 1-AA foe by a score of 50-6. The six points for McNeese were scored in the 4th Quarter when Head Coach Gary Pinkel had finally called off the dogs - I think the water boy and team managers were playing by this time.

Missouri also found a new running back to work into the rotation. True Freshman, Henry Josey had a break out game filling in for the injured Kendial Lawrence. On his first touch, he ran for 34 yards down the sideline. Josey ended the day with 112 yards on only 7 carries with 3 TDs. The Tigers now have three viable options at Running Back in Josey, Lawrence, and De'Vion Moore. Mizzou Quarterback Blaine Gabbert also had a field day completing his first 15 passes on his way to a 26 of 31 day for 220 yards and a TD. His completion percentage set a single game Tiger record. Former quarterback, T. J. Moe solidified himself as the team's leading receiver with another double digit reception game.

Meanwhile, former Missouri Team Captain, Derrick Washington was arrested again Sunday morning. He was taken into custody at his residence on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic assault. He posted $1000 bail and was released. It seems Coach Pinkel was absolutely correct in cutting this guy loose as soon as possible. It's a damn shame.

KU beats Georgia Tech

After suffering one of the worst and most embarrassing defeats in school history, almost everyone had written off the season for KU football. The team, losing some of the most prolific players in the program's history, was deemed finished and many fans started calling for head coach Turner Gill's head. Many fans simply hoped KU could at least score a touchdown and keep it relatively close against a ranked Georgia Tech team who was fresh off a huge win over its own FCS opponent in week one.

KU was able to answer its critics and save its season, upsetting heavily favored Georgia Tech 28-25. The KU offense, now led by freshman quarterback Jordan Webb and freshman running back James Sims, moved the ball early and often and almost made the offensive debacle in week one a distant memory. KU's defense gave up yards on the ground, but was able to eliminate the Yellowjacket's passing attack and come up with several key stops on fourth down to help KU seal the upset.

The upset was exactly what first-year coach Turner Gill needed to gain back the faith of the Jayhawk fans and players. After an embarrassing loss, it was important for KU to at least be competitive against Georgia Tech, but the upset gives KU momentum and a fresh start to its season.

While the win is huge for the program, it is baffling how KU could look so terrible in week one and so much better in week two. It is possible KU had been overlooking North Dakota State with Georgia Tech on the horizon, however just one score against the FCS Bison would have provided a victory. One thing is for sure, KU has now become one of the most unpredictable teams in the country, and all predictions for the 2010 season are now meaningless. At the very least, KU football gave its fans a reason to believe again.

Kansas City Greek Festival This Weekend

Bookmark and Share

For the 49th year, the Greek Food Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday in South Kansas City. It will take place at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 120th & Wornall. You can buy traditional Greek foods - there will be entertainment, food, and you can even take a tour of their beautiful church. Hours are: Saturday - Noon-10PM Sunday - Noon-6PM. You will spend in the neighborhood of $10 per person for food, but all proceeds benefit Harvesters.

Greek food consists of grilled meats, rice, pita bread, potatoes, salads, and wonderful pastries. For the less adventurous, there is the Gyro sandwich - which most people are familiar with - it consists of grilled seasoned meat on a pita with a tasty cucumber sauce. Greek pastries are excellent such as Baklava. Their desserts feature flaky pastry honey and walnuts, sometimes orange or other citrus flavorings. Carryout is available if you don't have time to stick around for the entertainment.

The young people of the church will entertain throughout the day and evening, performing traditional Greek dances. They will even teach you how to do them. There will be a moonwalk and games for the kiddos as well. Harvesters is great organization, so please stop by and have a bite to eat, especially if you have never had Greek food.

DUI Checkpoints in Kansas City September 10th, 11th

Well, it's the weekend again and it's time to look out for the DUI checkpoints in Kansas City, Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Liberty, Prairie Village and all of our lovely Kansas City neighborhoods where people will be getting wasted and driving around.

There are a few events going on this weekend that may trigger some DUI checkpoints that may not have been there on a normal Sept 10th or 11th.   The Prairie Village Jazz Festival will be going on on Sept 11th and will attract some more police attention than usual in Prairie Village (if there could possibly be more police attention in Prairie Village) so there could be a checkpoint around 83rd and Mission.

Other than that, the DUI checkpoints in Kansas City will probably be in the usual places:  77th and Wornall, Ward Parkway where it stems off into Kansas around 77th Street, anywhere on Southwest Trafficway and possibly a few dotted around Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Liberty and Prairie Village.

NFL Predictions, Season Officially Underway

The NFL regular season is officially here, as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Minnesota Vikings 14-9 last night in a rematch of last year's epic NFC Championship Game. The game showed us that the Saints will be as formidable as they were last year en route to winning it all, and the Vikings may be on shaky ground. Adrian Peterson is a beast, but lets not forget Brett Favre's hamstring and ankle have seen better days, and the team is missing a few key weapons such as leading WR Sidney Rice.

With the rest of the season about to get underway, I thought I would take a look at the NFL as a whole and through out some division predictions, as well as postseason predictions. The teams in each division are listed in a predicted order of finish.

AFC East
NY Jets
New England Patriots
Miami Dolphins
Buffalo Bills

I wanted to pick the Pats to win, as I am not sold on the Jets offense under Mark Sanchez. However, how am I going to pick someone who looks like Justin Bieber? Miami may be a year away as QB Chad Henne grows and adjusts to getting the ball to Brandon Marshall.

AFC North
Cincinatti Bengals
Baltimore Ravens
Pittsburg Steelers
Cleveland Browns

The Bengals offense lights it up once again, and a better defense wins the division. I don't see Pittsburg recovering from starting Dennis Dixon at QB for four games.

AFC South
Indianapolis Colts
Tennessee Titans
Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars

A very tough division. Colts win it every year, and Houston and Tennessee should battle it out for second place and a wild card spot.

AFC West
San Diego Chargers
Kansas City Chiefs
Oakland Raiders
Denver Broncos

Broncos loose too much, Chargers have too much talent. Watch out for the Chiefs and Raiders though, both will be better and could surprise this comming season.

NFC East
NY Giants
Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins

Everyone loves the Cowboys, so I'm taking a bounce back year for the Giants. Watch out for Washington, they may not be playoff ready but adding Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan at coach could be a huge upgrade.

NFC North
Green Bay Packers
Minnesota Vikings
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions

The Lions should be better this year, while the Vikings should be worse. Green Bay has a potent offense and a solid defense, and should be able to win the North.

NFC South
New Orleans Saints
Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Saints will become the first NFL South team to win the division in back to back years in the league's history (no I'm not making that up). Atlanta looks like a playoff caliber team, while Carolina and Tampa Bay will be forced to make due with shaky QB play.

NFC West
San Francisco 49ers
Arizona Cardinals
Seattle Seahawks
St. Louis Rams

The 49ers have a good defense, running attack and are finally getting consistent play from QB Alex Smith. The rest of the division is so terrible that San Francisco should be able to run away with this one.

For a superbowl prediction, how about Indianapolis over New Orleans in a bitter rematch from last year's game? How juicy would that be?
