KU Football Program Dead at 120

Bookmark and Share

The University of Kansas Football Program was found dead Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. The KU faithful in the stands that night could only gasp in horror as North Dakota State bludgeoned a barely breathing program to death. Turner Gill turned himself in Tuesday morning to authorities who were seeking him on charges of accessory to murder. Also sought is Athletic Director, (Sweet) Lew Perkins, those familiar with the case claim Sweet Lew has fled the state. If convicted, Gill could be sentanced to up to 10 years as Mark Mangino's food tester.

Born in 1890, Kansas Football hasn't always been the laughing stock of the Big 12. Three NFL Hall of Famers have played at Kansas (John Riggins, Gale Sayers, and Mike McCormack). They even won an Orange Bowl. They amassed a 6-6 record in 12 Bowl Games alltime. Not too shabby for a basketball school. The Program will be missed by other Big 12 schools who would count on an easy victory every year, as well as by the few thousand who regularly attended KU Football games. When does Basketball Season start?

When reached by Kansas City News, Mark Mangino had no comment, but a huge smile on his face!

Lew Perkins Retires

KU athletic director Lew Perkins has announced that he will retire effective immediately. Perkins was originally planning on retiring sometime next fall, which would have given KU an opportunity to take more time in finding a replacement. Perkins' announcement comes after several scandal allegations and on the heals of one of the biggest loses in the football programs recent history. Many reports are now surfacing that Perkins may have been forced out early against his will.

Perkins has been a controversial figure for KU athletics lately. Under his watch, KU won a national title in basketball and an orange bowl in football, and he raised the athletic department's revenue and significance greatly. However, the public soon learned that Perkins isn't perfect, and the scandals he has faced recently have tarnished his legacy somewhat in the public eye.

Perkins many have bent the rules a few times, but he is no more guilty than most athletic directors at major universities across the country. KU fans should remember both the steps the football program took under his watch as well as the school's continued dominance in basketball. Perkins' legacy may not be what it was a year ago, but his contributions as well as his desire to help the University of Kansas should never be forgotten.

Plaza Jewelry Store Robbed

Like something out of Hollywood script, Vinca Jewelry on the Plaza was robbed early Monday. When store owner, Simon Zouein, arrived to work Monday morning, everything seemed normal until he opened his safe. When he opened the safe, he discovered a hole cut in the back and through the concrete wall behind the safe. The thieves cut through 6-inch concrete wall and 6-inch thick steel in the back of the safe. They took diamonds and gold jewelry - the loss was substantial, but the store owner and police declined to say how much.

Police estimate the job took four to five hours, quite astonishing considering they had to make quite a racket. They accessed the wall from a service alley between the store and a neighboring restaurant. Highwoods Properties, the owner of Plaza could not be reached for comment - they are responsible for security and control of the access alley.

In this age of Security cameras everywhere, how could a heist like this be pulled off? Was it an inside job? Certainly the thieves had cased the joint at the very least - how else would they know where the safe was located behind the wall? I have a feeling the insurance company will want some answers to these questions.

Movie Reviews - A Bad Year for Movies

Kansas City News - Movie Reviews - A Bad Year for Movies

The year was 2007.  After doing a little Google research I realized that the last good year for big movies was 2007.  In 2007 the hits kept coming and coming - "No Country for Old Men", "Into the Wild", "Superbad" - these were the titles that came out literally one after another.  I remember thinking "man, I can't remember the last time I saw a bad movie".

The same is not true for 2010.  I can't believe how many bad movies I've seen this year.  I want my money back!  Here are some movies that top my list of "holy crap I can't believe I just paid to see this" movies:

Movies I Actually Walked Out On

1.  The Crazies - This movie was mildly interesting for about oh, 20 minutes or so.  It starts off with a great scene at a little league baseball game set in a nice rural town.  A man dressed in farmer garb walks aimlessly through the middle of the outfield wielding a shotgun.  A police officer is at the game, recognizes the old man and tries to call him off.  The old man is obviously deranged and the police officer is forced to shoot him.  And that's the end of the movie.  Just turn it off after this as it turns into the most ignorant sequence of events ever presented on film.  The old man at the baseball game scene is the scene that is in most of the previews - and now I know why - because it's the only good part in the whole movie.

2.  Brooklyn's Finest - Okay, let's take Richard Gere, the most pussy ass actor in Hollywood, and try to make him look tough.  No, and then no again.  Richard Gere should stick to his chick flick roles as the guy that every girl wishes their man resembled, ruining life for us regular guys.  This movie was doomed as soon as they cast Richard Gere.

3.  It's Complicated - Understandably I shouldn't have even tried this one, but it is just what you think it would be.  Old, coffee drinking, wine and cheese breath washed up actors trying to be classy and humorous.  I didn't actually walk out on this one as I fell asleep.

Movies That Only Moderately Sucked

1.  Alice in Wonderland - Johnny Depp is fairly consistant at picking out good scripts.  Knowing that he would probably take this classic tale to the edge, I took a chance.  Although I made it through the whole movie, I honestly can't remember much about it.

2.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid - This movie had every chance at being hilarious.  They could have just borrowed from Malcolm in the Middle's creative core.  But no, this movie is way to P.C. and it has all the flavor of a rice cake.  I thought for sure that it was written by a woman but I was suprised to find that it was indeed written by a guy named Jeff something or other.  Anyway, I was hoping that this movie would be a great salute to classics like "The Wonder Years" and "Malcolm in the Middle", but alas it was not.

Movies That Saved 2010

1.  Shutter Island - Easily the best movie of the year, I can't really go into detail on this one as anything I write will give something away.  Just think of how you felt after you watched "The Sixth Sense" and you've got it.  GREAT movie, even if you don't like Leonardo, trust me, you will like this.

2.  Hot Tub Time Machine - If you were born in the late 60's through the early 70's you will love this ride.  A great throwback movie that even features one of the great 80's movie stars in John Cusack.  Complete with a Poison concert, and set at a ski resort in Colorado, this movie has too many laugh out loud moments to count.

KU Loses to North Dakota State

KU's loss to North Dakota State this past saturday at home in Lawrence was the most embarrassing in the program's history. After the program was elevated to never-before seen heights by winning the Orange Bowl and putting together back-to-back bowl seasons, Turner Gill has almost destroyed everything Mark Mangino built with one swift stroke.

At first I thought I was overreacting, but taking into account KU's opponent, I am confident that this is the lowest KU has ever sunk. North Dakota State is an FCS school, and not even a good one at that. The Bison went 3-8 last year, and lost key playmakers on offense and defense. KU couldn't even score one touchdown against this team? Not one? Absolutely pathetic.

I know KU lost some of the most prolific offensive players in the program's history, but the team still has talent. It has former high recruits all over the offense and every offensive lineman has starting experience. KU should have been able to play its scrubs and still beat this team by two touchdowns.

KU looked unprepared, unmotivated and downright helpless against "mighty" North Dakota State. Turner Gill inherited a team with young talent due to Mark Mangino's best recruiting classes ever before his departure. Gill needs to at least make progress this season and win a few games, or his tenure in Lawrence will be shorter than anyone ever could have guessed.
