Chiefs Schedule 2014 Released by KCMB News Kansas City

The Chiefs 2014 Schedule has been released!  Check out who we get to stomp on this year...

We definitely got what we deserved this year. After posting up 9 wins in a row last season to be the only team in week 9 without a loss, the NFL has pretty much made sure that won't happen again. With an early 2nd week match up against the Denver Broncos at Denver, the Chiefs will have their hands full this season. We should have no problem getting past Tennessee and Miami, but then we hit another wall with a Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots. The good news is that the Monday Night game is here in Kansas City at good old Arrowhead Stadium where the goons will be out in full force cheering on the Chefs. We then move on to play in San Francisco against a strong 49ers team before heading to San Diego for a division game against the Chargers after an early week 6 bye week.

Instead of the Governor's Cup this year, a game typically played in the Preseason, the Chiefs will play the St. Louis Rams at home in the Regular Season. They will then host the New York Jets at Arrowhead where hopefully we send Mr. Ryan packing. On November 9th the Chiefs will travel to Buffalo, New York, where they lost a tragic Playoff game back in 1993 that Chiefs fans have not forgotten to this day. The Bills are not the powerhouse that they used to be back then and we should have no trouble running all over them as long as we're still relatively healthy by November 9th.

Then bring on the pain as we welcome to Arrowhead the 2013 Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks on November 16th. Oh boy, that will be a good game as we have developed a rival with the Hawks even though we didn't play them last year, strictly over the stadium decibel level argument.
Seattle held the Guinness World Record for loudest stadium until the Chiefs posted up a higher reading during a 2013 home game. Seattle then rallied and regained the record and much speculation has come from that game as some claim that Seattle was "piping" in crowd noise through their huge PA system. The Chiefs fans will be the ones bringing the noise on November 16th at Arrowhead as we try to humble the 2013 Champions.

The Chiefs then play back to back division games vs the Raiders in Oakland and then the Broncos at Arrowhead, before heading to sunny Arizona to whip up on the hapless Cardinals in their own stadium. The Chefs come home after that to host the Oakland Raiders in the bitter cold of December 14th before finishing off the season with a December 21st match up with the Steelers at Pittsburgh and the final game at Arrowhead vs the Chargers. All together the Chiefs ended up with 1 Monday night game at home vs the New England Patriots, 1 Thursday night game in Oakland, and 1 Sunday night game vs the Broncos at Arrowhead. 2 night games at Arrowhead, that will be good for Kansas City's economy and should help boost ticket sales, provided the Chiefs can stay over .500 and make a Playoff run in 2014. Best of luck boys! Hit the link below to see the schedule in full...

Wide Receiver Donnie Avery Signed by Chiefs

Donnie Avery, wide receiver, was signed by The Kansas City Chiefs today. Avery was drafted by The St. Louis Rams in the 2008 NFL Draft as the 33rd overall pick. Donnie Avery was a wide receiver for the University of Houston until joining the NFL where he enjoyed two good seasons as a Ram, catching 100 balls for 1263 yards and 8 touchdowns. Avery was sidelined in 2010 with an ACL injury and then dealt to the Titans where he was healthy enough to play in 8 games.

Donnie Avery, super star wide receiver in Indianapolis
The next chapter in the Donnie Avery story proved to be a great one as he was a stand out receiver opposite Reggie Wayne hauling in 60 receptions for 781 yards and 3 scores.

With the Chiefs, Avery will be competing for the number 2 slot with Jonathan Baldwin, Kansas City's 1st round pick from 2011 who has yet to shine on the field.

Chiefs Sign Free Agents

New Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has hit the ground running in his new role, signing two free agents recently. Kansas City has acquired defensive tackle Daniel Muir and offensive tackle Steven Baker.

Muir began his career with the Green Bay Packers – where Dorsey spent the last 21 seasons – as an undrafted free agent. He is best known for his time in Indianapolis, where he played for four seasons with the Colts and started for them in Super Bowl XLIV. Muir spent last season with the New York Jets, where he failed to gain any significant playing time. In his six year career, Muir has appeared in 46 games while making 26 starts.

Kansas City also signed offensive tackle Steven Baker, who was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent last season but was released just before the regular season began. Baker played his college ball at East Carolina, and spent last season on Arizona’s practice squad.

The signing of both players, especially Muir, seems like an attempt to add some depth and competition. It is unlikely that either player will become a significant contributor for Kanas City next season. New Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was a defensive assistant for the Jets last season, so it is possible that he saw something in Muir that made him worth pursuing. At the very least, Sutton will have an experienced player who knows his scheme and can help bring the other defensive lineman up to speed.

Many expect the Chiefs to begin addressing several other positions of need via free agency, including wide receiver, cornerback and possibly quarterback. The players the team signs in free agency may also provide Chiefs fans with a more clear picture in regards to who the Chiefs will target in the 2013 NFL draft.

Chiefs Hire John Dorsey As General Manager

John Dorsey, a longtime personnel man for the Green Bay Packers, has been hired as the new general manager for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will be hosting a press conference today in which Dorsey will be officially introduced.

After a five year playing career in Green Bay, Dorsey joined the Packers’ front office, where he moved up the ranks and became a key contributor to the organization. Dorsey served as the director of college scouting from 2000 through 2012, a period in which the Packers built a talented team through the draft that consistently made the playoffs and won the 2011 Super Bowl. Dorsey spent last season as the director of football operations.

Dorsey also has a close relationship with new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Reid was an assistant coach for the Packers from 1992 through 1998, a period in which Dorsey worked as a college scout.

The hiring of Dorsey should be considered a home run by Chiefs fans. The Packers won the Super Bowl in 2011 with a starting lineup nearly entirely made up of players the team drafted, including Pro Bowl caliber players such as Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, B.J. Raji, James Jones, Casey Hayward and others. The Packers have consistently drafted well and signed undrafted free agents that have become productive NFL starters, such as Tramon Williams and Sam Shields. Poor drafting was one of the biggest criticisms of former GM Scott Pioli’s tenure, as the Chiefs often used high selections on average to below-average players and failed to build a deep roster that could sustain injuries.

As the Chiefs start their rebuilding process, the team will need to draft well and add young talent to the roster. Dorsey is the right man for the job, and Chiefs fans have reason to be optimistic that things may start to turn around.

Chiefs Fire Crennel, Pioli Safe For Now

The Chiefs have fired Head Coach Romeo Crennel, but General Manager Scott Pioli is safe for now. Many Kansas City fans have called for Pioli’s head after a string of disappointing seasons, bad personnel decisions and poor drafting, but for the time being, only Crennel is out.

Crennel’s dismissal isn’t at all surprising, considering how poorly Kansas City performed this season and his past history as a head coach. The Chiefs finished 2-14, and were routinely blown out. Crennel was a disaster as a head coach in Cleveland, which suggests that the Chiefs simply gave the reigns to someone who is not cut out for the job. Crennel has a strong track record as a defensive coordinator, and he seems to a great guy. He handled the Jovan Belcher murder suicide with extreme class, and Kansas City fans will not forget that. He just isn’t cut out to be a head coach in the NFL.

The Pioli situation is more puzzling. The Chiefs’ GM hasn’t drafted well and has failed to build a deep roster that can withstand injuries and compete for a championship. Even worse, Pioli is the man who hired Crennel and famously feuded with former coach Todd Haley, who led the Chiefs to a division title and playoff berth and had appeared to have finally won over the locker room.

The Chiefs have said that “no determination” has been made regarding Pioli’s fate, but the team needs to cut ties with the failed GM. Kansas City has the number one pick in next year’s draft, and will be picking at the top of every round. More than ever, the team needs a GM who will make the right decisions, and assemble both a roster and coaching staff that can turn the Chiefs around.

Chiefs Draft Pick 2013 - Lose Ground With Win

Kansas City Chiefs take 2 steps back and ZERO steps forward with useless win over the Panthers.

Did anyone in the Chiefs head office pay attention to what the Indianapolis Colts did last season?  In 2011, the Indianapolis Colts flagrantly and intentionally threw nearly every game in order to get the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. This proved to be a stoke of genius as the Colts now hold an 8-4 record and are headed for the Playoffs. The Chiefs, like the Colts in 2011, are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback, and by carelessly winning today they have narrowed their chances of landing that valuable first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Everyone knows that the Colts blatantly threw their 2011 season purposely to attain the first round draft pick in 2012. The media turned a blind eye to it, the fans didn't mention it or throw a fit and protest the team, and look where the Colts are now. Both the Colts management and their fans were intelligent enough to understand exactly what the team needed to do, and they all kept very quiet as they lost almost every game of the 2011 season. This is the difference between a smart football city and a slow, non forward-thinking football city. Kansas City is completely clueless in regards to what it will take to rebuild a struggling football team. Winning 2 or 3 games at this point serves absolutely NO PURPOSE and the team would be better served by losing their remaining games and attaining the first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

If the genius of what the Colts did in 2011 isn't enough proof of this fact, then Chiefs management and fans alike are not looking at the big picture. What did the Chiefs possibly gain by winning this pointless game today? We can tell you what they lost; valuable positioning in the 2013 NFL Draft. Winning games at this point is simply ridiculous as the only thing that has any meaning for the dismal Kansas City Chiefs is the possibility of a bright future. With each meaningless win in 2012, the Chiefs lose footing on building a better franchise in 2013 through the highest of draft picks.

Idiots.

Kansas City Chiefs - Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

If the Chiefs are going to crawl back into the AFC West race and have a respectable season, they’ll need to take advantage of a winnable game on Sunday. The Chiefs’ next opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have won only one game this season, and have struggled on both offense and defense.

The biggest news for the Chiefs is that the team will have a new quarterback – Brady Quinn gets his first start in Kansas City after Matt Cassel’s concussion injury has ruled him out for Sunday. The Chiefs have run the ball extremely well this season, as Jamaal Charles has rushed for a league-leading 551 yards and also tallied 118 yards receiving. Tampa Bay has only allowed 74 yards-per-game on the ground this year, so this one may come down to whether or not Kansas City can get Charles going.

Tampa Bay has struggled offensively, averaging only 276 yards per game as a unit. Josh Freeman has been average at best under center this season, throwing for a pedestrian 790 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. The Bucs haven’t gotten their ground game going as well, as the team’s top two backs, Doug Martin and Legarrette Blount are only averaging 3.5 yards per carry. Kansas City’s defense looked very impressive against the Ravens last week, limiting Baltimore to only nine points despite often defending a short field due to Cassel’s turnovers. If the Chiefs defense continues to play well, a struggling Tampa Bay offense may have no answer.

Both the Chiefs and the Bucs are hard to get a read on, as the two teams have been incredibly inconsistent on both sides of the ball this year. Tampa Bay is coming off a bye week, while Kansas City is coming off an incredibly frustrating loss. Still, the Bucs’ offense has really struggled this year, and it appears that the Chiefs defense is coming into its own. If Brady Quinn can protect the football and make a couple of plays, Kansas City will have a good shot to pick up its second win of the year.

Tampa Bay has won the last three meetings in this series by a combined 13 points. Game time is Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

Eric Winson Rips Chiefs Fans For Cheering Matt Cassel's Injury

The biggest story emerging from the Chiefs heartbreaking 9-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens isn’t that the team had a chance to stay to knock off one of the best teams in the conference, or that Kansas City’s defense played a fantastic game. Instead, Eric Winston has grabbed all the headlines with his criticism of Chiefs fans and their behavior during Sunday’s game. Winston ripped into Kansas City fans for cheering when quarterback Matt Cassel was injured.

Winston was quoted as saying the following after the game:

"We are athletes, okay? We are athletes. We are not gladiators. This is not the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard-earned money when they come in here and I believe they can boo, they can cheer and they can do whatever they want, I believe that. We are lucky to play this game. People, it’s hard economic times, and they still pay the money to do this. But when somebody gets hurt, there are long lasting ramifications to the game we play, long lasting ramifications to the game we play. I’ve already kinda come to the understanding that I won’t live as long because I play this game and that’s okay, that’s a choice I’ve made and a choice all of us have made. But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don’t care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel — it’s sickening. It’s 100 percent sickening. I’ve been in some rough times on some rough teams, I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there.”

Winston was not the only player to criticize Kansas City fans for their behavior. Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and the Ravens’ Haloti Ngata both expressed their displeasure with the situation through the media.

First, credit Winston for somewhat acknowledging the frustrations of the fans and that the people who attend games to watch his team play spend a lot of their time and money to do so. Fans invest a lot into their team, and Kansas City has one of the most passionate fan bases in America.

Having said that, Winston has a point. It is no secret that Matt Cassel has played extremely poor thus far, and fans have a right to criticize him and even boo him when he doesn’t play well. However, cheering when someone gets injured is crossing the line. It shows a lack of class and puts Kansas City in national headlines for all of the wrong reasons. Fans keep obsessing over Cassel being benched, and for whom? Brady Quinn, the guy who was a disaster in Cleveland and couldn’t beat out Tim Tebow in Denver? Ricky Stanzi, who during the preseason appeared to not even belong on an NFL roster? Cassel is the best quarterback on this team, which says more about Scott Pioli’s failure as a GM.

Chiefs fans need to direct their frustration in the appropriate direction. Cheering when a home player gets knocked unconscious is a classless move, and KC fans are better than that. This was Oakland Raider territory.

Kansas City Chiefs - San Diego Chargers Preview

The Chiefs had a disastrous start to their 2012 season, losing its first two games in convincing fashion. Last week, Kansas City was able to save its season and turn things around in a thrilling overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints. If the Chiefs want to keep their momentum going and pull to .500 on the season, they will need to take down a familiar foe: the San Diego Chargers.

The first two weeks were a complete opposite for the Chargers, who cruised out to a 2-0 record. However, last week the team got absolutely shut down by the Atlanta Falcons, losing at home 27-3. Atlanta looks like one of the best teams in the league this year, but it was a disheartening effort for Chargers fans who thought the team’s early season struggles were a thing of the past. The biggest cause for concern with the Chargers is turnovers – Phillip Rivers threw two interceptions against Atlanta and has three this season. Rivers threw a whopping 20 picks last year, and has three so far this season. After taking good care of the football throughout his career, Rivers has been shaky lately, and the Chiefs’ secondary should have some chances to make a play. San Diego also has running back Ryan Mathews back from injury, although he lost a fumble last week and has a bad reputation of coughing up the football. The Chiefs should have a good chance to force some turnovers on Sunday, which could be the biggest factor in the game.

The Chiefs have been battling injuries all season, and this game will be no different. Dexter McCluster, Peyton Hillis and Kevin Boss all got hurt against the Saints, and Hillis and Boss both have missed practice this week (while McCluster has been very limited). The team also lost starting center Rodney Hudson, who broke a bone in his leg and was placed on injured reserve. Ryan Lilja will move from guard to center to replace Hudson, while rookie Jeff Allen will start at guard. Kansas City already had some key injuries on defense, and now will have to rely on several rookies and inexperienced players to contribute.

The last two meetings between these two teams were decided by a field goal, and this game has all the makings of another nail bitter. The Chiefs must take advantage of San Diego’s tendency to turn the ball over to pull this one out, and simply cannot afford to lose any more starters to injury.

Chiefs Injury Report - Three Players Hurt Against Saints

The Chiefs were able to pick up a huge win in New Orleans on Sunday, saving their season and cooling the frustrations of a heated fan base. However, the win came with a big price, as Kansas City lost several players due to injury during the New Orleans game.

Dexter McCluster, Peyton Hillis and Rodney Hudson all left Sunday’s game with an injury, and head coach Romeo Crennel indicated that at this point, he is unsure if any of the three will be able to play this Sunday. McCluster left the game in the second half with an elbow injury, Hillis has an injured ankle, and Hudson has injured his knee.

McCluster has been a pleasant surprise for the Chiefs this season, posting 13 receptions and often finding ways to move the chains with his quickness and speed. What hurts the Chiefs is they have no one who can replace McCluster’s role – Dwayne Bowe and Jonathan Baldwin are bigger, downfield threats and Steve Breaston is more of a possession receiver. Rookie Devon Wylie was supposed to be used in a similar role as McCluster; however he has been hurt most of this season and is not ready for playing time.

Hillis’ injury likely means more playing time for Shaun Draughn, as the team needs to limit the carries of Jamaal Charles. Charles had 39 touches against the Saints, far too many for an explosive back recovering from a serious knee injury. Hillis was signed to be a bruising, between the tackles runner who could give the Chiefs a change of pace from the dynamic Charles and take some of the work load off of him. Draughn had a solid preseason and has looked pretty good so far in a backup role this year.

Hudson, the team’s starting center, was replaced by Ryan Lilja. Lilja normally starts at guard, and was replaced by rookie Jeff Allen after assuming the center duties. To address depth concerns, the team signed offensive lineman Russ Hochstein this week.

This trio of hurt Chiefs join three others on the sideline – safety Kendrick Lewis, nose tackle Anthony Toribio and tight end Kevin Boss. It is still unclear if any of these players will be able to return for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

Injuries are a part of the NFL, but the Chiefs’ already had some serious depth concerns before losing McCluster, Hillis and Draughn. Some young players are going to have to step up and fill the void if the Chiefs are to pull off another upset and beat the Chargers this weekend.

Chiefs Win First Game In Dramatic Fashion, Beat Saints In OT

Step away from the ledge, Chiefs fans – Kansas City has won a game! The team picked up a road victory this Sunday against New Orleans in dramatic fashion, finishing the Saints off in overtime after an impressive comeback from a double-digit deficit.

In the third quarter, it appeared that the Chiefs were on their way to an 0-3 start, as the team trailed the Saints by 18 points and had no answer for Drew Brees and the high-powered New Orleans offense. Matt Cassel had just thrown a terrible interception, and the Chiefs offense looked lost. However, the Kansas City coaching staff made a brilliant (and obvious) move to help get the team back in the game – it fed Jamaal Charles the ball. Charles ripped off a 91 yard touchdown run – the longest in team history – to help get the Chiefs back in the game. New Orleans moved the ball on the next drive, however Stanford Routt intercepted an underthrown Brees ball at the goal line.

From there, the Chiefs defense finally looked like the unit it was expected to be this season. Brees never completed another pass, and the Saints offense never got another first down. The fourth quarter belonged to Kansas City, as Ryan Succop hit three field goals in the period and the team also got a safety on a sack from Justin Houston, who had a monster game for the Chiefs. Once overtime started, the Chiefs had all of the momentum, and after the defense once again held the Saints on New Orleans’ first possession, the team found itself with great field position. A few short passes and a gutsy fourth down conversion moved the team into field goal range, where Succop nailed his sixth kick of the day to give Kansas City the win.

Winning this game was obviously huge, but it is the way Kansas City pulled this out that should have fans excited. The team relied on its playmaking running back to move the ball late and stopped asking Matt Cassel to throw the ball down the field, which should be the team’s game plan every week. The most encouraging sign was the play of the defense - the Chiefs absolutely shut down the Saints during the fourth quarter and overtime and looked like one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Kansas City faces a tough schedule this season, but if its defense continues to play well, it should be in every game. This win should give the Chiefs some momentum and badly-needed confidence after the Kansas City media spent all of last week ripping the team.

Up next for the Chiefs is a home game against the San Diego Chargers, who were beaten badly by the Atlanta Falcons yesterday. Kickoff at Arrowhead stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Chiefs Injury Report - Charles Expected To Play

Things haven’t gone Kansas City’s way over the first two games of the 2012 NFL season, and when Jamaal Charles banged up his surgically-repaired knee during Sunday’s blowout loss to the Bills, it appeared that things would get worse. Chiefs fans can breathe a small sigh of relief, as Romeo Crennel has indicated that while Charles’ knee is sore, he will likely play this week against the New Orleans Saints.

Charles only played two games last season before tearing the ACL in his left knee, a huge disappointment after he enjoyed a monster season in 2010. Kansas City signed Peyton Hillis this offseason, and so far the team has limited Charles to only 22 carries this season. The running game has not been a problem for the Chiefs, and the team has often found itself being forced to pass as the defense has given up points at an alarming rate so far. Expect Kansas City to keep Charles’ load light, and for Hillis and Shaun Draughn to continue to get a good amount of carries. The team cannot afford to lose its biggest playmaker on offense for a second consecutive year, and must be cautious.

Kevin Boss also found himself in the locker room during Sunday’s game; however it appears his injury is much more serious. Boss sustained a head injury against the Bills, and left the game after feeling woozy after his hit. Boss is being re-evaluated this week, and since Kansas City has a good amount of depth at tight end, the Chiefs should be fine if Boss needs a week or two to heal.

Crennel also mentioned that cornerback and kick returner Javier Arenas hurt his neck against the Bills. There has been no word yet on whether or not Arenas will miss any time. There also have been no updates on defensive tackle Anthony Toribio or safety Kendrick Lewis, who haven’t played so far this season due to injuries.

Chiefs Blown Out By Bills, Start Season 0-2 Once Again

The Kansas City Chiefs were no match for the Buffalo Bills yesterday, getting blown out on the road, 35-17. The loss means that the team has a 0-2 record for the sixth time in the last seven years.

The final score makes the game seem closer than it actually was – Kansas City scored 14 points in the fourth quarter when the Bills had already put the game away and inserted their backups into the game (most notably former Chief Tyler Thigpen at quarterback). The team trailed 21-0 at halftime and 35-3 at the end of the third quarter. The Chiefs had several opportunities to get back into the game throughout, but costly mistakes and a failure to execute limited the team to three points. The most painful of these blown opportunities came late in the first half, when Peyton Hillis fumbled at the goal line and the ball was recovered by Buffalo.

It was expected that the Chiefs’ defense would get a significant boost with the return of Tamba Hali and Brandon Flowers, but that wasn’t the case on Sunday. Buffalo’s C.J. Spiller ran all over the Chiefs’ defense for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for two scores in an efficient outing. Even Kansas City’s special teams let them down, as Buffalo’s Leodis McKelvin returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter.

The Chiefs’ offense was just as bad, putting together one of the ugliest first halves the team has seen in quite some time. The team gained only 71 yards on its first five possessions, looking overmatched by a Bills defense that had gotten dominated by a poor New York Jets offense last week. Things were so bad that Spiller nearly out-gained the entire Kansas City offense by himself in the first half. Matt Cassel ended up throwing for 301 yards and two touchdowns to Dwayne Bowe, but most of his production came late in the game when things were already decided. Cassel’s play in the first half was borderline terrible, and he has yet to show any consistency this season.

The bottom line is that once again, the Chiefs were not ready to start a regular season. For two straight years, the team has had a terrible preseason followed by two blow-out losses in weeks one and two, proving that Kansas City simply is not ready to play. The Chiefs have a very difficult schedule, facing the Saints, Chargers and Ravens in their next three games. An 0-5 record is a distinct possibility after the first two weeks.

Chiefs Face Backlash After Insulting Fan On Twitter

A social media fiasco ensued yesterday when a Kansas City Chiefs fan voiced his frustrations about the team via Twitter – only to have the official Chiefs twitter feed message him back.

Travis Wright (@teedubya) used twitter to express how angry he was regarding the team’s refusal to use all of its salary cap space. Wright tweeted “I’m not much of a @kcchiefs fan anymore. Clark Hunt’s yearly 30m under the cap bullshit is unethical. Greedy bastard owners can F.O. @nfl”

The Chiefs’ official twitter feed responded with a direct message to Wright, tweeting “Would help if you had your facts straight. Your choice to be a fan. Cc get a clue.” The Chiefs followed this up by blocking Wright from their feed.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Wright was far from done, as he later posted the tweets to Reditt. The story quickly became a social media sensation, with over 500 comments and 1,200 up-votes. The Chiefs twitter feed was quick to apologize, tweeting “I apologize to the fans for my response to a tweet sent to me earlier. No excuse for my actions. I am truly sorry and it won’t happen again.”

There are two sides to this story. One, Wright is correct that the Chiefs do have a lot of money to spend. In actuality, Kansas City has $16.5 million to spend, the fourth highest amount in the league behind the Titans, Jaguars and Browns. Also, while Wright’s rant was childish, the person who runs the Chiefs twitter feed should always take the high road and not get into it with a frustrated fan after a blowout loss to start the season – especially one that has over 120,000 followers (more than the Chiefs feed has).

However, Wright needs to learn that if he goes around badmouthing and swearing at organizations, they have a right to respond. While the Chiefs should have taken the high road, he shouldn’t be surprised one employee took exception to his rant, especially with the language he used. Posting the message to the public seems a bit childish, especially when he was the one who instigated the situation and posted that the Chiefs’ owner could “F.O.”

There has been no official word from the Chiefs’ organization so far, but if the story continues to get bigger, the team may very well address the situation.

Several Questions Following The Chiefs Loss To The Falcons

The Chiefs’ season opener is in the books, and the team will try to regroup after an embarrassing home loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Kansas City still has some major question marks on both sides of the ball in regards to injuries and personnel decisions, and it will be interesting to see how this translates to the team’s second game against the Buffalo Bills.

The biggest question regarding the defense is whether or not Brandon Flowers will be able to play this Sunday. After it appeared that Flowers would be able to go against the Falcons, he was held out of the game due to an ongoing foot injury. Head coach Romeo Crennel has stated that if Flowers can practice, he will play. This week’s practices will be a telling sign on whether or not Flowers is ready to start again for the Chiefs. Flowers’ return is even more crucial because his normal backup, Jalil Brown, is battling a groin injury and barely played against Atlanta. Jacques Reeves got torched by Julio Jones several times on Sunday, showing how crucial a healthy Flowers is to the defense.

One player who was missing Sunday that will for sure suit up against the Bills is Tamba Hali, who has served his one-game suspension and is officially back. Kansas City’s pass rush against the Falcons was weak – while Justin Houston got a sack and pressured Matt Ryan several times, Edgar Jones (who played in Hali’s spot on passing downs) failed to get to Ryan. Hali’s return should make a big difference this Sunday against Buffalo.

Offensively, most Chiefs fans are wondering where last year’s first-round pick Jonathan Baldwin has gone. Against Atlanta, Baldwin did not start (the Chiefs started Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster) and did not receive a target. It didn’t seem like he even got on the field. For the game, McCluster received ten targets, while Dwayne Bowe and Tony Moeaki each received six. The coaches raved about Baldwin during training camp, and it appeared that he was on the verge of breaking out and having a big season. Not seeing him get much action has to be disheartening for Chiefs fans, and many will wonder if the team has yet again whiffed on a first round pick.

Kansas City Chiefs - Atlanta Falcons Preview

The Chiefs’ 2012 regular season kicks off this Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Currently, Vegas favors the Falcons by three points.

There is good news and bad news for Chiefs fans entering this game. The good news is that it appears that both Derrick Johnson and Brandon Flowers will be able to play on Sunday. Johnson had injured his ankle, and Flowers has been sidelined with a nagging foot injury before returning to practice on Wednesday and seeing snaps with the first-team defense. Stopping the Falcons without these two players would have been nearly impossible, and if they are close to full-strength, it is a huge boost for Kansas City’s defense.

The bad news is that the Chiefs are still missing several key players for this game. Tamba Hali is serving a one-game suspension, and starting safety Kendrick Lewis is also out. The team has several other players banged up on defense, and as we saw this preseason, the Chiefs’ defensive depth is nearly non-existent. The team cannot allow Matt Ryan to have all day to throw, and Kansas City may have to get a bit creative with their blitz schemes to pressure Ryan and try to force some turnovers.

The game will also serve as a homecoming for legendary tight end Tony Gonzalez, who is likely entering the final season in his hall-of-fame career. Gonzalez was traded to the Falcons in 2009 for a second round pick, which the team used on defensive back and kick returner Javier Arenas. Gonzalez holds the Chief team records in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches, and this will be the first time he has faced his former team.

Atlanta enters this season with huge expectations, and the biggest question mark surrounding the team is whether or not it can take the next step and contend for a championship. The Falcons have lost to the eventual Superbowl champion in the last two playoffs, getting blown out by the Packers two seasons ago and falling 24-2 to the Giants last year. Matt Ryan is a good quarterback, and he is surrounded by talented playmakers. Ryan played very well in the second half of last season, and if he is on against a depleted Chiefs defense, Kansas City might not have much of a chance.

Defensively, the Falcons added four-time pro bowl cornerback Asante Samuel this offseason, pairing him with Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson to form a dangerous secondary. The Falcons’ biggest question mark on defense will be whether or not it can effective rush the passer and contain the Chiefs’ running game. Atlanta’s front seven may very well determine the outcome of the game.

Derrick Johnson and Brandon Flowers Expected To Play Sunday

Yesterday we reported that while Derrick Johnson will likely play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, several other key players were still question marks in regards to their availability. Chiefs fans get even better news today, as it appears star cornerback Brandon Flowers will likely be good to go for week one.

Flowers lined up with the starters in practice yesterday, which is a strong sign that he will be used heavily this Sunday. It is unlikely the Chiefs would use Flowers with the first-string defense this close to its first regular season game if he couldn’t play or would receive limited minutes. Flowers has made some big strides in the past couple of days in his recovery from a foot injury he sustained in late July.

While the Chiefs’ cornerback may be rusty after missing the entire preseason and getting limited practice time, Flowers should still be a big boost for Kansas City’s defense. The Falcons have several dangerous wide receivers, and the Chiefs will be missing Tamba Hali due to his one-game suspension.

Flowers’ return is also big because it appears that Kendrick Lewis will not be on the field Saturday. Asking the secondary to play well without Hali missing one starter is already a tall ordeal, and there is no way the unit would stop Atlanta if both Flowers and Lewis were missing on Sunday. Jalil Brown, who had replaced Flowers in the starting lineup, appears to be banged up as well.

Apart from Lewis, it appears that defensive linemen Anthony Toribio and Allen Bailey will not be able to go Sunday. Their absence means the team will depend on first-round pick Dontari Poe to make a difference for the Chiefs’ defensive line. The experience should benefit Poe, but the Chiefs are starting to get paper-thin in terms of depth. Any more injuries, and the defense may be unable to duplicate the success it enjoyed last season.

Chiefs Injury Report - Several Key Players Uncertain For Week One

The Chiefs 2012 regular season opener is only four days away, and the team is still waiting to see if they will have several key players available for their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio, linebacker Derrick Johnson, quarterback Brady Quinn and safety Kendrick Lewis are all uncertain for week one.

It appears that Derrick Johnson has a strong chance to play Sunday, according to head coach Romeo Crennel. The ankle injury Johnson suffered in the team’s final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers appeared to be serious, but the Chiefs’ Pro Bowl linebacker has made great progress this week.

Toribio and Flowers are still major question marks. Toribio is out of a walking boot, but his status is uncertain. If he cannot go, the Chiefs will start this year’s first-round pick, Dontari Poe, at nose tackle. Flowers, the team’s best cornerback, has been battling a foot injury for several weeks.

The least likely to play out of all the injured players is Lewis, who has just started to work out again after sporting a sling for a few weeks due to a shoulder injury suffered in the team’s preseason game against the St. Louis Rams. Crennel mentioned that he doubts Lewis will be ready for week one and his injury could hold him out longer.

Atlanta is a good team, and the absence of any of these players will be a big blow to Kansas City. If Johnson plays, he may have limited mobility, and losing Flowers and Lewis would be a crushing blow to a secondary that is thin on depth. Add in that Pro Bowl pass rusher Tamba Hali is suspended for this game, and suddenly week one doesn’t look very promising for the Chiefs.

Chiefs Finalize 53 Man Roster and Practice Squad

The Chiefs have finalized their 53 man roster, and recently signed eight of the players they had cut to the practice squad. This means that the team’s roster and depth chart is fully set for the start of the regular season, which begins this Sunday.

After cutting a bevy of young players and veterans, Kansas City recently announced it had signed eight of the players to join the practice squad. The original players signed to the practice squad were:

WR Josh Bellamy

FB Patrick DiMarco

WR Junior Hemingway

DL Jerome Long

OT David Mims

WR Jamar Newsome

OL Lucas Patterson

DB Neiko Thorpe

However, this list was not set in stone, and team has recently made some changes. Hemingway was cut, and Kansas City signed offensive lineman Rich Ranglin. The team is deep at wide receiver and could use some added depth to the offensive line, and Hemmingway found himself as the odd man out. Ranglin has spent the past three seasons in the Arena League, and won the league’s offensive lineman of the year award in 2011 with the Kansas City Command.

There were a few surprises regarding who made the team’s 53 man roster. The team decided to keep four tight ends, which may hint that the Chiefs plan on using a two tight-end set quite a bit this season. The decision to release DiMarco was also interesting, as Kansas City now has no true fullbacks on the roster. DiMarco’s release was likely due to the emergence of Nate Eachus, who ended up making the team as a running back. Eachus saw snaps at fullback in training camp, and ran well as a halfback during the preseason for Kansas City. The Chiefs ended up keeping four other running backs apart from Eachus – Jamaal Charles, Shaun Draughn, Peyton Hillis and Cyrus Gray.

The team also decided to keep third-string quarterback Ricky Stanzi, which has brought the Chiefs some criticism. Many teams only keep two quarterbacks on the active roster, and Stanzi’s inclusion takes up a roster spot that could be used where Kansas City lacks depth. Stanzi did not play well during the preseason, and many feel it is time for the team to cut ties with the former Iowa standout and begin developing another young quarterback.

Defensively, the biggest surprise is likely defensive back Tysyn Hartman, who played his college ball at Kansas State. Hartman’s inclusion means that the team currently has ten defensive backs on its roster. Tamba Hali, who is suspended for week one, does not count against the team’s current 53 man roster, which means the Chiefs will have to release one player when Hali returns. Many feel Hartman may be dropped, and the team will keep nine defensive backs.

Kansas City has placed quarterback Alex Tanney and defensive back De’Quan Menzie on injured reserve. Tanney has a hand injury, while Menzie has been battling a hip injury for several weeks.

Chiefs Fall To Packers, 24-3

The Chiefs wrapped up another lackluster preseason last night, falling to Green Bay Packers 24-3. After winning its first preseason game in convincing fashion, Kansas City lost its remaining three. The team is now 7-29 in exhibition games since 2004.

Most of the game was a battle of the backups, but the Chiefs first-string offense looked good early on. The team moved the ball consistently, and found a lot of success on the ground. Despite gaining a lot of yards, Kansas City could only muster three points. One drive stalled and Ryan Succop missed a 54 yard field goal, and another drive ended with a Brady Quinn interception when the Chiefs were about to score. From there, things went south in a hurry.

Offensively, Ricky Stanzi and Alex Tanney struggled to consistently move the ball, and the Chiefs got almost nothing through the air. Despite rushing for 247 yards for the game, Kansas City only scored three points, although it should be expected that the team’s third and fourth string quarterbacks would have trouble lighting up the scoreboard.

The biggest concern Chiefs fans should have is how the team’s defense played. Packers backup QB Graham Harrell had been having a terrible preseason, but he absolutely lit-up the Chiefs last night. Harrell finished 13 of 15 with 223 yards, and he led the Packers to a touchdown on all three of his possessions, and all three were long scoring drives. On some plays, the Packers’ receivers were wide open, and while Green Bay boasts one of the most talented and deepest WR corps in the league, most of these players will likely not even make the team for Green Bay.

The entire preseason exposed one of the Chiefs’ biggest weaknesses – the team has a severe lack of depth, particularly on defense. What makes this troubling is that the team still does not know if Brandon Flowers or Kendrick Lewis will be ready for the start of the season, and Tamba Hali is suspended for the first game. Injuries are a regular occurrence in the NFL, and if the Chiefs suffer any more on defense, it doesn’t appear that it has a lot of guys who can step in and play at a high level.

Kansas City’s regular season starts next Sunday at 12:00 p.m. when the team hosts the Atlanta Falcons.
