Royals Make Roster Moves Following Losses To Blue Jays

After winning four games in a row to pull four games under .500, the Royals have entered a bit of a tailspin, losing five of their last six. Their past two losses to the Toronto Blue Jays have forced the team to make several roster changes as Kansas City looks to get back in contention before the All Star game.

To address both injuries and a lack of production in their pitching staff, the Royals have recalled pitchers Nate Adcock and Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha. Adcock is 0-3 with a 3.12 ERA in nine games, including two starts with the Royals this season, while Coleman has a 4.91 ERA in 17 appearances out of the bullpen. After a disastrous last outing, pitcher Vin Mazzaro will be heading back to Triple-A. After being handed a 3-0 lead, Mazzaro gave up six runs and 13 hits in only 5 1/3 innings in Kansas City’s 6-3 loss to Toronto. Mazzaro has gone 3-3 for the Royals this season with a 5.70 ERA. The Royals also designated Mitch Maier for assignment. Maier has hit .172 with two homers and seven RBI in 32 games this year.

The Royals only have four games remaining before the 2012 All Star game festivities hit Kansas City, and it will need to get pick up some wins to stay in contention in the AL Central. Tonight, the Royals will try to salvage a four game split with the Blue Jays, playing at 6:07 p.m. Luke Hochevar (5-8) will start for Kansas City, while the red hot Henderson Alvarez (5-6) will start for Toronto. After wrapping up its series with the Blue Jays, the Royals will travel to Detroit for a three game series before the All Star break.

Billy Butler's Blast Leads Royals To Victory - Kansas City News

On a day in which Texas’ Josh Hamilton made headlines by hitting four home runs in one game, Billy Butler decided to grab a bit of the spotlight as well. Butler hit a three-run homerun in the eighth inning to propel Kansas City to a 6-4 victory over Boston. The win improved the Royals’ record to 10-19 on the season.

It appeared that Kansas City was on its way towards another frustrating loss. Despite giving up just three runs, Danny Duffy struggled and lasted 4 1/3 innings. Kansas City’s offense had a big third inning, but had been dormant since. The game was in doubt until Daniel Bard walked both Jarrod Dyson and Alex Gordon in the eighth. That would be the end for Bard, who struggled with his control all night and even had two balks. Boston’s Matt Albers relieved Bard, and three pitches later, Butler crushed a pitch to give Kansas City a lead it would not relinquish.

While Butler’s homer will get all of the headlines, several other Royals had key contributions to the win. Chris Getz and Humberto Quintero both came up with big hits in the second inning to drive in some runs. Getz has significantly improved his performance at the plate this season, and has been a pleasant surprise for a Royals team that is struggling to consistently score. Kansas City also got quality pitching from Kelvin Herrera, Jose Mijares and Jonathan Broxton after Duffy left the game. With the Royals’ starting pitching struggling lately, it is encouraging to see the bullpen step up.

The Royals’ face the Red Sox again tonight at 7:10 p.m. A victory would give the Royals a winning record in its AL East home stand against New York and Boston. Bruce Chen (0-4) will start for the Royals, while Jon Lester (1-2) will take the mound for the Red Sox.

Previewing The Royals' Upcoming Series

The Royals’ game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed last night, meaning that Kansas City will officially start the series tonight. If there was ever a time for the Royals to turn its season around and pick up some much-needed wins against an AL Central opponent, this is it. The Tigers are in a tailspin, losing eight of their last 10 games. To make matters worse for Detroit, the team recently lost Delmon Young to a seven game suspension.

After a ridiculous losing streak, Kansas City has responded well, winning three of its last four games. However, the Royals may have dug themselves in too deep a whole to get back to respectability this season. The schedule is about to get tougher, with New York and Boston coming to town, and series with first place teams like Texas and Baltimore on the horizon. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have been inconsistent this season, and the team’s seven game home stand against these two may very well be the make-or-break point of the season.

Kansas City will face Detroit tonight at 6:05 p.m. Luke Hochevar (2-1) will start for the Royals, fresh off his best performance of the season. He will face Rick Porcello (1-2), who has struggled this season.

Alex Gordon Named Official Spokesperson for 2012 MLB All-Star FanFest - Kansas City News

Alex Gordon has been named the official spokesperson for the 2012 MLB All-Star FanFest, which will begin on Friday, July 6th. Gordon’s spokesperson role includes making personal appearances at many of the events being held from July 6 through July 10.
With the Royals hosting the 2012 MLB All-Star game, it is no surprise that Gordon got the spokesperson nominee. He is coming off the best season of his career in which he not only put up great offensive numbers, but significantly improved his defense in the outfield and earned a gold glove award.
Unfortunately, Gordon couldn’t capitalize on the momentum of being named official spokesperson in tonight’s game against the Tigers. Gordon made a spectacular catch in the outfield, but struck out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. The Royals lost to the Tigers, 3-2, and fell to 3-7 for the season.

Royals Season Comes to and End

The Kansas City Royals have completed another losing season, leaving only 5 teams in the entire league with worse records than the Royals. Although this season ended on a positive note, with the Royals stringing together several wins and many players stepping up and improving their batting averages and ERAs, it was still just another losing season for a team that hasn't seen a decent win / loss record since 1985. Ah, thank God for the 1985 Royals, George Brett, Willie Wilson, the good old days...

I suppose the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about is David Glass and the way he refuses to spend money on quality players, and furthermore, the players who emerge from Kansas City as stars are immediately traded away.

The Kansas City Royals are talking a big game right now about how their farm team approach is ready for harvest in 2012, and that they are predicting a playoff appearance by 2013. KANSAS CITY, MO (January 25, 2011) – Baseball America, baseball’s preeminent authority on minor league prospects, has rated the Kansas City Royals farm system as the best in all of baseball in the soon-to-be-released 2011 Prospect Handbook.

"The Royals have one of the deepest and most talented farm systems in recent memory,” said Jim Callis, Executive Editor at Baseball America. “It's unusual to see a system with three stud hitters like Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Wil Myers, or four quality lefties like John Lamb, Mike Montgomery, Danny Duffy and Chris Dwyer, and the Royals have both. To show how highly we regard the Royals system, we ranked it No. 1 before the Zack Greinke trade, which netted more top prospects. "Seven of the Royals’ top 10 prospects will be in Major League Spring Training camp next month in Surprise, Ariz. The group includes first baseman Eric Hosmer (ranked #1), third baseman Mike Moustakas (#3) and left-handed pitcher John Lamb (#4).

The Royals have been nurturing a great farm team system that is creating future star players, but how do we know that isn't just another way for Glass to make money? At what point will the Royals start trading away their star players, as they have done with every star player we've ever had since the 1990's? I started to get suspicious the minute they renovated Kauffman Stadium last season.

It is no accident that they turned Royals stadium into a giant BAR with the new renovations. Fans can now go to a game and not even watch the game, they can go to one of the many indoor bars, go watch a live band, pretty much anything but pay attention to just the game itself. Glass figures that if all there is to do at a Royals game is actually watch the Royals, then the fans would go home thus spending less money on concessions. Glass has figured out a way to make more money off the ever-losing Royals franchise and I think that they have no intention of EVER spending money on players, thus eliminating us from the big race indefinitely.

But hey, I was lucky enough to actually ATTEND the big games in 1985, so I will always have that. I'm sorry that you young fans will probably never see Kansas City in a celebration of that magnitude in your lifetime. At least we will be able to watch the great players come through Kansas City next season for the All Star Game 2012.

Royals Winning Games!

Hey wait a minute...it's not over yet! The Kansas City Royals are actually playing pretty well of late. Although they have no shot at the MLB Playoffs, it is still a good sign that they are playing as a team and putting up some wins. The Chiefs could take a lesson from the Royals at this point, as they are complimenting each other in the media, playing like a team and seem to have a really positive attitude right now.

Pitcher Bruce Chen, now 11-7, pitched a stellar game against the Minnesota Twins pitching for 8 innings and slapping them down 4 - 0. Chen was on the radio this morning really pumping up the Royals and how they have come together as a team and he goes on to describe the positive feeling around the ball club right now. Whatever they are feeding The Royals, can they please feed some to The Chiefs? The Chiefs are staring down an 0-2 start this weekend facing the somewhat overrated Detroit Lions on Sunday, it would be nice if Chen and some of the Royals players could show up to a Chiefs practice and give them some pointers on playing like a team - especially on defense. It's always good to have at least one Kansas City sports team playing well, so congratulations to the Royals on their recent victories. They are officially no longer in last place!

Kyle Davies Released by Royals

Our Long, Local Nightmare
is over. Kyle Davies was released today in order to make room for Salvador Perez. Perez is thought to be Kansas City's brightest catching prospect. Matt Treanor is unavailable due to injury, and Brayan Pena is on paternity leave. That left the Royals short a catcher on their roster, hastening Davies release.

Davies, with his 1-9 record and 6.75 ERA for the season will not be missed by Royals fans. Now, calling him the worst pitcher ever is probably not fair, but he has been horrendous ever since coming to Kansas City in 2007. All the while, Royals management has sung his praises hoping for a turnaround that never came. Who knows, maybe another team will pick him up and rejuvenate his career. God knows this has happened to former Royals in the past.

Bubba Starling, Football or Baseball?

Bubba Starling and his family are nearing a decision on his future. We know that, because he has a deadline. The Royals have until Monday at Midnight to sign the two sport phenom or their draft pick is nullified. Starling has also signed a letter of intent and is enrolled a t the University of Nebraska. They want him to be their new starting Quarterback. Most likely Bubba could excel in either situation. Many, including his High School Coaches, say he is the best athelete they have ever seen.

I think it's an easy decision. Starling will play baseball for the Royals organization without a doubt. Bubba has agent Scott Boras on his team, and he knows what he is doing. This thing will go down to the last minute on Monday, and Starling (as well as Boras) will take the huge payday. We are talking in the $9-10 million neighborhood. Nobody turns down that kind of money to get pummeled by Linebackers for free.

Sure, the Royals suck, and probably always will, but if he gets to the Bigs and becomes the star everyone thinks he can be, all he has to do is play out his contract, become a Free Agent, make more money to play for a winner. This scenario has worked wonders for players over the years in the Royals organization. Besides, who would want to play for this group of dumb ass fans?

Royals Draft Hometown Boy Bubba Starling

Just as our Royals have hit mid season form, at least we have something else to give us hope for the future, because really that's all we ever have. The Kansas City Royals selected Derek "Bubba" Starling with the fifth overall selection in the MLB June Draft on Monday Night making the Gardner, KS native the highest pick ever from the Kansas City Metro Area. Starling plays outfield, specifically Center Field and was widely considered to be the best athlete available in the draft. Speculation was that the Royals would take one of a few college pitchers if available, or High School phenom pitcher Dylan Bundy from Oklahoma. As fate would have it, none of those pitchers were available making drafting Starling a no-brainer.

Starling has also signed a letter of intent to play football at Nebraska, though that is looking more and more like a back up plan now that he will be guaranteed millions to sign with the Royals. Bubba hinted to as much when he said "I was definitely a Royals fan growing up ... I knew whatever team got me was going to be special, but the Royals drafted me and I feel blessed." Sounds like it's sayonarasville to the Cornhuskers. He has until August 15th to sign, and many times athletes will take their time making a decision.

Starling should forgo the suspense and sign right away as the first 60 days can yield valuable experience to a young player. By all accounts he's a good kid and an incredible athlete, the Royals are lucky, it seems to have him.

Injuries Force Royals to Move Duffy Up

Injuries to Royals starters Kyle Davies and Bruce Chen have forced Dayton Moore to call up young gun Danny Duffy. Vin Mazzaro was seen as a possible in the rotation, but after his awful outing on Monday, the team had to look elsewhere. In the midst of a 4 game skid and a possible drop out of the division race, the Royals know something must be done with a starting rotation that is second to last in the American league in ERA.

Davies left in the first inning Monday night and went on the 15 day DL before Mazzaro's meltdown. Bruce Chen has been sidelined since last week with a strain in his back, and likely won't see action at Major League level until early June. That leaves Duffy and fellow rookie Nate Adcock to fill the void. Duffy has a 3-1 record this year at AAA Omaha, with a 3.00 ERA and 43 Strikeouts in 36 innings, he has been regarded as a top pitching prospect since being drafted in the 3rd round in 2007.

Nate Adcock was a Rule 5 draftee in the off season and has been excellent out of the bullpen this year for the Royals compiling a 2.08 ERA in 8 appearances. Adcock will likely get the start on Saturday in Davies's spot in the Rotation.

Royals Win Series in New York for First Time Since 1999

The Royals finished an impressive series win over the Yankees last night in New York marking the first time the Royals had won a series in New York since 1999. This is quite a statement for this young club who have exceeded expectations thus far. Many Royals fans, myself included are simply waiting for the collapse to begin. I thought the 0-6 road trip was the beginning of the end, then I looked at this road trip to NY and Detroit and thought this might be it. Lo and behold, the Royals surprise again. I now am a believer as the Royals simply destroyed the Yankees last night 11-5, and young hope Eric Hosmer had three more hits including a HR for the second straight game.

To give some perspective on how long it's been since the Royals won a series over the Yankees in New York, I thought I would compile a list of how the world was back in 1999.

Elvis Grbac was the Chiefs Quarterback and it had only been 5 years since the Chiefs had won a playoff game. Gunther Cunnigham was their Head Coach.

Norm Stewart had just retired as Mizzou's Basketball coach.

Almost nobody in the US knew who Osama Bin Laden was.

Napster was released to very little fanfare.

Bill Clinton was President of the United States.

Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France.

The Columbine Massacre occurred in Colorado.

Eric Hosmer was 9 years old.

Royals Swept in Texas

Is this the beginning of the end for the Royals? After a nice start to the 2011 campaign, Kansas City was swept over the weekend in Texas, dropping the Easter day game 8-7. As Royals fans, we are always waiting for the other show to drop, or the 15 game losing streak to begin. Though the good guys showed some signs of life, the Rangers bats were too much to contend with. The Rangers scored 22 runs in the three game series, by far the most given up by the Royals in a series this season (Cleveland scored 20 runs over a FOUR game series).

Bruce Chen was the victim on Sunday. Chen, who has been electric to start the season gave up 6 runs in 4 and a third innings - far and away his worst outing of the season and dropping his record to 3-1 on the season. A six run 5th inning by the Rangers did in the Royals, who did however mount a furious comeback in the final two frames to fall by 1. Mike Aviles hit two home runs and stole a base for his best offensive performance of the season.

The road trip continues on Tuesday with a three game set at division leading Cleveland before returning home for the weekend.

Of note: in attendance at Easter Sunday's game was former President and former Texas Rangers Owner George W Bush (pictured above).

Royals Pull Out late Victory to Split Series With Cleveland

The Kansas City Royals pulled out a late victory last night to split a 4 game series with division leading Cleveland. The good guys scored one in the 8th, and 2 in the 9th for a thrilling come from behind win. The victory salvaged a 2-2 split with the Indians, and kept Kansas City within a game of the Division lead.

Kansas City has had several walk off victories this season with many different heroes. Last night Melky Cabrera did the honers with his two RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off of previously perfect Indians Closer Chris Perez. Slumping Kila Ka'ahue delivered a lead off double to get the party started in the final frame. A pinch runner, a single, a walk and runner thrown out at home later, Cabrera came up with the bases loaded.

This win was just another day at the office for these young Royals. Exciting win after exciting win have been the norm for these guys. I guess they didn't get the memo that they were supposed to be the American League Central whipping boys. Kansas City sits at 12-7 and has the second best record in the American League. Maybe it won't last, but we should enjoy it while it does.

Next on tap for the Boys in Blue is a week long road trip visiting the reigning American League Pennant winning Rangers and then a trip to Cleveland where the Indians will be hungry for revenge.

Royals Take Weekend Series From Detroit

The Royals improbable fast start continued over the weekend in Detroit where Kansas City took 2 out of three from the Tigers. With some timely hitting and atrocious defense by the Tigers, the Royals won the rubber game on Sunday 9-5. The Royals had 15 hits on the afternoon, coupled with 4 errors by the Tigers, Kansas City put the game out of reach.

Luke Hochever (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, and the artist formerly known as "The Mexicutioner" pitched the final two-thirds for his 3rd save of the year. Offensively, Wilson Betimet had a great day reaching base in all five plate appearances. He went 4-4 with an RBI, 2 runs scored, and a walk. But everyone contributed, up and down the lineup, no one went hitless, and the Royals had a total of 6 extra base hits.

The series win puts the Royals at 6-3 and a game out of first in the AL Central. Cleveland is on first place and in the midst of a 7 game winning streak. We are off today before a short two game series in Minnesota Tuesday and Wednesday. Minnesota is off to a slow start, now is the time to take advantage with a sweep before heading back home for the weekend. There's hope again in this cow town.

Royals Home Opener 2011 at the K in Kansas City

Oh, say, can you see...all of the awesome new BARS that
we put in!  Don't watch the game - get drunk!
The Kansas City Royals held their Home Opener for their 2011 Season Today at the K
by Kansas City News

Well, once again it's time for adult "ditch day" at the K.  Thousands of Kansas Citians thought up good excuses to take personal days to head out to the old ballpark to watch our pathetic Royals take the field with the equivalent of minor league players at best.  The Kansas City Royals were promptly pummeled by The Los Angeles Angles 4-2.  We decided not to go this year because last year's home opener just had too many negative experiences including the hilarious bathroom situation (two urinals, 2 stalls), and the nearly impossible task of obtaining a friggin' beer.

Former Royals player Mike Sweeney was on hand to throw out the first pitch today and recalled his playing days with The Royals:

“Believe it or not, I was thrown in as a defensive replacement. They thought I was a pretty good catcher back then,” Sweeney recalled. “Paul Molitor hit a chopper down the third-base line and I threw a ball up the first-base line and made an error. And I got fined in Kangaroo Court for having more Major League errors than hits.”  At that point, Sweeney turned to his young son, Michael, and asked him if he wanted to be a Major League player. “Yes,” the boy replied.  Sweeney said, despite the error, his first game was special. “It was all you dream of and more,” he said.

It's not surprising to anyone that the Kansas City Royals are one of the worst teams in baseball.  The entire TEAM in Kansas City makes just under what ONE PLAYER makes for the Yankees.  The Royals entire salary total for 2011 = $36.1 Million.  Alex Rodriguez will make $32 Million in 2011.

When asked about this seriously lopsided salary situation Royals general manager Dayton Moore said “I’m not worried that it’s too low, I look at it as something that gives us tremendous flexibility going forward as an organization to be competitive as we negotiate for players.”  Yeah, OK, whatever.  I think the Royal's money goes into the same sort of pot that the Chiefs money goes into - right back into the owners pocket.  Neither the Royals nor the Chiefs have any plans to spend any serious money on players in the future, why do you think that they turned both stadiums into virtual BARS.
