The Chiefs 2014 Schedule has been released!  Check out who we get to stomp on this year...

We definitely got what we deserved this year. After posting up 9 wins in a row last season to be the only team in week 9 without a loss, the NFL has pretty much made sure that won't happen again. With an early 2nd week match up against the Denver Broncos at Denver, the Chiefs will have their hands full this season. We should have no problem getting past Tennessee and Miami, but then we hit another wall with a Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots. The good news is that the Monday Night game is here in Kansas City at good old Arrowhead Stadium where the goons will be out in full force cheering on the Chefs. We then move on to play in San Francisco against a strong 49ers team before heading to San Diego for a division game against the Chargers after an early week 6 bye week.

Instead of the Governor's Cup this year, a game typically played in the Preseason, the Chiefs will play the St. Louis Rams at home in the Regular Season. They will then host the New York Jets at Arrowhead where hopefully we send Mr. Ryan packing. On November 9th the Chiefs will travel to Buffalo, New York, where they lost a tragic Playoff game back in 1993 that Chiefs fans have not forgotten to this day. The Bills are not the powerhouse that they used to be back then and we should have no trouble running all over them as long as we're still relatively healthy by November 9th.

Then bring on the pain as we welcome to Arrowhead the 2013 Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks on November 16th. Oh boy, that will be a good game as we have developed a rival with the Hawks even though we didn't play them last year, strictly over the stadium decibel level argument.
Seattle held the Guinness World Record for loudest stadium until the Chiefs posted up a higher reading during a 2013 home game. Seattle then rallied and regained the record and much speculation has come from that game as some claim that Seattle was "piping" in crowd noise through their huge PA system. The Chiefs fans will be the ones bringing the noise on November 16th at Arrowhead as we try to humble the 2013 Champions.

The Chiefs then play back to back division games vs the Raiders in Oakland and then the Broncos at Arrowhead, before heading to sunny Arizona to whip up on the hapless Cardinals in their own stadium. The Chefs come home after that to host the Oakland Raiders in the bitter cold of December 14th before finishing off the season with a December 21st match up with the Steelers at Pittsburgh and the final game at Arrowhead vs the Chargers. All together the Chiefs ended up with 1 Monday night game at home vs the New England Patriots, 1 Thursday night game in Oakland, and 1 Sunday night game vs the Broncos at Arrowhead. 2 night games at Arrowhead, that will be good for Kansas City's economy and should help boost ticket sales, provided the Chiefs can stay over .500 and make a Playoff run in 2014. Sean Smith Signed by Chiefs to 3 Year Deal Worth $18 Million

Just minutes ago the Kansas City Chiefs signed cornerback Sean Smith to a 3 year deal for $18 million, with $11 million guaranteed. Smith was highly sought after in the free agent market even though he only has 5 TOTAL interceptions in his ENTIRE career. The Kansas City Chiefs have shown once again today that they are going to be very aggressive in the acquisition of free agents, as they are most likely going to look for an offensive lineman in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Sean Smith played cornerback for The University of Utah and was drafted in 2009 by the Miami Dolphins where he had an average career. He had an excellent performance in the 2009 Sugar Bowl vs the Alabama Crimson Tide where he made 6 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and a game changing knock down which may have influenced his position in the draft. Sean Smith elected to skip his senior year in college to enter the 2009 NFL Draft where he was selected late in the second round by Miami.

This move could have possibly been a reaction to the free agency movement of the Denver Broncos, who signed an amazing deal with star wide receiver and the last great white hope at his position Wes Welker this week. With Peyton Manning throwing the ball to Wes Welker, every team in the AFC West had better stock up at the cornerback and safety positions.

NFL experts have been impressed with The Kansas City Chiefs free agency moves thus far, and most say that the Chiefs got Sean Smith for a great price, one that was much lower than he was hoping for at the beginning of free agency. Sean Smith is a large cornerback who could develop into an elite player. He is almost a sure start opposite cornerback Brandon Flowers. Smith can also play wide receiver and return kickoffs.

Chiefs Sign Bowe, Colquitt To Long Term Deals

The Chiefs were busy yesterday, reaching long-term agreements with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt. The team has also decided to place the franchise tag on tackle Branden Albert.

Bowe’s deal is for five years and $56 million with $26 million guaranteed. The contract makes Bowe the second highest paid receiver in the NFL behind Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. During the season, it appeared that Bowe’s days as a Chief were numbered, as he suggested that he would like toplay for a winner and it was clear that the Chiefs were about to enter a massive rebuilding project. Despite all that, Bowe has been very productive in his career, and the team is extremely thin at WR without him in the lineup.

Bowe wasn’t the only Chief who hit it big yesterday – Dustin Colquitt became the highest-paid punter in the NFL when Kansas City inked him to a five year, $18.75 million deal with $8.9 million guaranteed. There is no denying that Colquitt is an elite NFL punter – last season, he placed 42 punts inside opponents’ 20-yard line (two short of the NFL record) and he has continuously bailed the team out of bad field position when the offense stalls. Despite Colquitt’s talent, that is a lot of money to give to a punter – especially when the Chiefs are rebuilding for the future and not in a “win-now” mentality.

The third and final big move the Chiefs made was placing the franchise tag on left tackle Branden Albert. The former first round pick has started 71 games for Kansas City and has slowly developed into one of the better tackles in the league. It was rumored that the Chiefs were strongly considering drafting tackle Luke Joeckel, and it is unknown at this time if resigning Albert will change that.

Chiefs Close To Acquiring 49ers Quarterback Alex Smith

According to multiple reports, the Kansas City Chiefs have a deal that is nearly completed to acquire San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. Any deal involving Smith cannot officially take place until March 12, when the new league year begins.

Smith’s story was well documented this past season due to the emergence of Colin Kaepernick during the 49ers run to the Super Bowl. After a strong 2011 season in which he threw 17 touchdowns against only five interceptions, Smith was having an even better season in 2012 – enjoying a 104 QB rating through nine games before suffering a concussion against the St. Louis Rams. Kaepernick played well in Smith’s absence, and head coach Jim Harbaugh stuck with the young QB instead of Smith all the way up through the 49ers loss in the Super Bowl to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chiefs’ most glaring need is at quarterback, and many thought the team would draft a QB with its top overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. However, this draft does not have any quarterback prospects that deserve to go number one overall, and many reports have indicated that Kansas City is moreinterested in drafting Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel.

If the Chiefs trade for Smith, there are two paths the team can take. Kansas City could make Smith the starting quarterback and still draft a QB like Geno Smith or Matt Barkley with the top pick, grooming the young signal caller for the future similar to how the Packers brought along Aaron Rodgers. The Chiefs could also make Smith the starter and spend its top pick on an impact offensive or defensive lineman, and select a QB later in the draft or next season. Acquiring Smith certainly gives the team options.

Is Smith a good fit for Kansas City? He rarely turns the ball over and has excelled in a scheme in San Francisco that emphasizes conservative passes and running the football. With the dynamic Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs are built to be a run-first offense, and Smith could give the Chiefs just what they need – a steady quarterback who limits mistakes. The downside to Smith is that he struggled his entire career in San Francisco until a championship-level team was built around him. As Matt Cassel proved, an average QB can look good with a strong team around him, and Smith will not have the talent supporting him that he enjoyed in San Francisco.

Autopsy Reveals That Former Chiefs Linebacker Jovan Belcher Was Legally Drunk

The autopsy of former Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher performed by the Jackson County medical examiner has revealed that Belcher was legally drunk when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, before fatally shooting himself in the parking lot outside of the Chiefs practice facility.

Belcher’s blood-alcohol level was .17 just before 8:00 a.m., around the time that he committed suicide in the Chiefs’ parking lot. This level is more than double the legal driving limit in the state of Missouri. Perkins had little to no alcohol in her system when Belcher shot her nine times following a heated argument in the home the couple shared.

What is most disturbing about Belcher’s high blood-alcohol level is that he encountered Kansas City police only a few hours before his murder-suicide. Belcher had been out partying with another woman he had a relationship with, Brittney Glass, before being found in his vehicle outside of Glass’ apartment building by police around 3:00 a.m. Belcher was asleep in his running car when he was awoken by police, who allowed Belcher to go into Glass’ apartment and did not arrest him. The officers claimed they could not smell any alcohol on Belcher.

Belcher would leave Glass’ apartment only a few hours later, returning home legally drunk before the fatal argument started between he and Perkins. Kansas City police were called by Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, at 7:52 a.m.

The autopsy on Belcher helps explain what is quite possibly the most disturbing episode ever involving a Kansas City sports team. With a blood-alcohol level of .17 at the time of his death, it is clear that Belcher was heavily intoxicated when he encountered police the night before, although the officers simply allowed him to sleep it off at an apartment belonging to his girlfriend, and couldn’t have known Belcher would wake up a few hours later and drunkenly drive home and confront Perkins.

Chiefs Interview Brad Childress & Doug Pederson

New Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has begun the process of filing out his staff, and it appears that he may be offering some positions to several former coworkers. Reid has talked to former Eagles assistants Doug Pederson and Brad Childress about joining him in Kansas City.

Pederson could be in the mix to serve as the team’s offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach. He has served as an assistant for the Eagles for the past four seasons, earning a promotion to quarterbacks coach before the 2011 season. In his playing days, Pederson served as Brett Favre’s backup QB in Green Bay for several seasons, and found brief playing time for both the Eagles and Browns later in his career.

It is unknown what role Childress would hold on Reid’s staff, but he doesn’t appear to be in the mix for either the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach positions. Childress worked with Reid for seven seasons in Philadelphia, three as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. He was hired by the Minnesota Vikings in 2006 to become the team’s head coach, a position he held for nearly five seasons. Childress spent last season as the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

Earlier, it was believed that former Browns’ head coach Pat Shurmer would be a candidate for the offensive coordinator position, but it appears that he is no longer being considered. Shurmer served as an offensive assistant for Reid in Philadelphia for 10 seasons before taking the Browns’ head coaching job in 2011.

It shouldn’t be surprising to Chiefs fans that Reid has been interviewing coaches he has worked with in the past. However, it is important for the new head coach to also consider what kind of team he will have and be willing to hire coaches he doesn’t have a prior working relationship with. The Chiefs will be looking to rebuild through the draft, and it is important that Reid hire coaches that excel at developing young players, especially at quarterback.

Who Will Be The Next Head Coach Of The Chiefs?

Now that Romeo Crennel has been fired, Chiefs fans can focus on who will be leading Kansas City next season. Several coaches lost their jobs this past Monday, which means there are several open positions across the league.

It is important to note that while the Chiefs still have not made a decision on the fate of maligned general manager Scott Pioli, chairman Clark Hunt will be directing this coaching search. Hunt has stated that he would like to find a younger coach who could be with the team for a long time, and many speculate that he will try to find an offensive-minded coach, especially if the team drafts a quarterback with its first overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. Hunt’s control of the situation also likely eliminates coaches that Pioli has ties with, such as Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz and New England’s Josh McDaniels.

One name that has surfaced is Bruce Arians, and while he doesn’t fit Hunt’s desired age range, he would be a strong fit for the Chiefs. Arians performed well as Indianapolis’ interim head coach this season, and he helped develop Andrew Luck. Arians has also worked with the likes of Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. Other offensive minded coaches include Mike McCoy, the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, Dirk Koetter, offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, and Jay Gruden, offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. Washington’s Kyle Shanahan could also be in the mix, however Hunt may be concerned with how young he is (only 33) and the fact that he is the son of the man who coached the rival Denver Broncos to two Super Bowl victories.

If the Chiefs decide to go with a defensive-minded coach, Perry Fewell of the New York Giants would be a great fit. Fewell has routinely developed one of the top pass-rushing attacks in the league, and could help Kansas City’s young defensive lineman develop and find ways to maximize the talent of Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Cincinnati’s Mike Zimmer may also be a possibility.

The hottest name from the college ranks has to be Oregon’s Chip Kelly, who has developed one of the most lethal offenses in college football history and could be a Jim Harbaugh-type that wins big both in college and in the NFL.

There is a deep pool of head coaching candidates this offseason, however the Chiefs will have to compete with several other franchises that all finished with a better record this past season. The team may not get its first pick, but Hunt will certainly have plenty of options.

Chiefs Move Closer Towards Top Pick In 2013 NFL Draft With Loss To Raiders

Despite playing the lowly Raiders on Sunday, the Chiefs yet again got embarrassed on the field, getting shut out 15-0. The loss now means that the Chiefs are one step closer towards acquiring the top overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

There really isn’t much to be said about Kansas City’s performance on Saturday. Opposing teams know that if Jamaal Charles is contained, the Chiefs have absolutely no shot of scoring many points on offense. The Chiefs only offensive weapon was held to 10 yards on nine carries, and Brady Quinn couldn’t get anything going with a group of young, unproven receivers. While the defense did a good job of keeping Oakland out of the end zone, this one never really felt in doubt.

It is time for Chiefs fans to look ahead to next season, and that starts with the 2013 NFL draft. Currently, the team is tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the worst record in football at 2-12. Philadelphia and Detroit are the next two teams in regards to fewest total wins, but both have four wins on the season. It appears that the race for the top pick in 2013 NFL draft is now solely between Kansas City and Jacksonville, and with both tied at the moment in regards to record, it is important to examine the NFL’s tiebreakers for draft order. Tiebreakers for draft order regarding teams with an identical record go in this order:

• Strength of schedule – The team with lower strength of schedule percentage wins this tiebreaker.

• Divisional record.

• Conference record.

First, let’s examine the remaining games for both teams. The Chiefs finish against the Colts and the Broncos, two teams that are vastly superior to Kansas City. The Colts will be fighting for a playoff spot, and the Broncos may be playing for a first round bye.The Jags play the Patriots next week, which is all but a guaranteed loss, but will get the lowly Tennessee Titans in its season finale. The Jags already beat Tennessee this season, and the Titans won’t be playing for anything. The odds of Jacksonville winning one of its final games has to be higher than Kansas City’s.

At this moment, Kansas City owns all of the tiebreakers and is in the driver’s seat for the top overall pick. If Kansas City drops its next two games, it will be picking first in the 2013 NFL draft.

Chiefs Draft Pick 2013 - Lose Ground With Win

Kansas City Chiefs take 2 steps back and ZERO steps forward with useless win over the Panthers.

Did anyone in the Chiefs head office pay attention to what the Indianapolis Colts did last season?  In 2011, the Indianapolis Colts flagrantly and intentionally threw nearly every game in order to get the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. This proved to be a stoke of genius as the Colts now hold an 8-4 record and are headed for the Playoffs. The Chiefs, like the Colts in 2011, are in desperate need of a franchise quarterback, and by carelessly winning today they have narrowed their chances of landing that valuable first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Everyone knows that the Colts blatantly threw their 2011 season purposely to attain the first round draft pick in 2012. The media turned a blind eye to it, the fans didn't mention it or throw a fit and protest the team, and look where the Colts are now. Both the Colts management and their fans were intelligent enough to understand exactly what the team needed to do, and they all kept very quiet as they lost almost every game of the 2011 season. This is the difference between a smart football city and a slow, non forward-thinking football city. Kansas City is completely clueless in regards to what it will take to rebuild a struggling football team. Winning 2 or 3 games at this point serves absolutely NO PURPOSE and the team would be better served by losing their remaining games and attaining the first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

If the genius of what the Colts did in 2011 isn't enough proof of this fact, then Chiefs management and fans alike are not looking at the big picture. What did the Chiefs possibly gain by winning this pointless game today? We can tell you what they lost; valuable positioning in the 2013 NFL Draft. Winning games at this point is simply ridiculous as the only thing that has any meaning for the dismal Kansas City Chiefs is the possibility of a bright future. With each meaningless win in 2012, the Chiefs lose footing on building a better franchise in 2013 through the highest of draft picks.

Kansas City Chiefs - Carolina Panthers Preview

The Chiefs march towards the top overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft continues on Friday, when the team hosts the Carolina Panthers at home in Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff for the game is 12:00 p.m.

While the Chiefs have had an absolute disaster of a season, Carolina’s hasn’t gone much better. The Panthers currently have a 3-8 record, held back by a poor offense that is only averaging 19 points per game. Quarterback Cam Newton has struggled this season after a very impressive rookie year, struggling with inconsistency and turnovers. Newton is also the team’s leading rusher, and the team’s entire offense rests on his shoulders. If the young QB struggles in this one and commits some turnovers, the Chiefs are going to have a very good shot to pick up their second win of the year.

While the Panthers’ offense has struggled this year, it has been nowhere near as bad as the Chiefs’ anemic attack that is averaging 10 points per game in its last seven contests. Kansas City has 32 turnovers this year and only 94 red zone points, and both stats rank last in the NFL. After Matt Cassel’s poor play this season – he threw for six touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions – Chiefs fans demanded to have him benched. Unfortunately, his replacement, Brady, Quinn, has not been any better. Quinn has yet throw a touchdown pass this year, and has four interceptions of his own. It appears that neither quarterback is the long term answer, and the odds of the Chiefs selecting a QB with their first round pick in the 2013 draft are increasing.

The lone bright spot for the Chiefs this season on offense has been Jamaal Charles, who has rushed for 928 yards and boasts a healthy 4.8 yards-per-carry average. It is a shame that one of Charles’ prime seasons was wasted this year, but the back should be one of the few offensive players on this current team that is a part of Kansas City’s long term plans.

Despite how terrible the Chiefs have played lately, this is a winnable game. The Panthers played well and picked up a win last week, yet they have been inconsistent all year. If Newton plays well and can put some points on the board, the Chiefs won’t have a chance. However, if the Panthers’ young QB commits some turnovers, this might be a low-scoring affair that comes down to the wire.

Chiefs Lose To Bengals

The Chiefs only fueled their reputation as the worst team in the NFL on Sunday, getting hammered by the Cincinnati Bengals, 28-6. The loss drops Kansas City to 1-9 on the season, and the team keeps moving closer towards acquiring the top draft pick in next year’s NFL draft.

Arrowhead stadium was only about half-full for this one, and many fans dressed in all black in attempts to send a message to ownership to clean house in the front office and coaching staff. Chiefs fans are right on the money – Scott Pioli has completely failed as the Chiefs GM and Romeo Crennel is a failed NFL coach who should have never been given another opportunity to lead an NFL franchise. Kudos to Kansas City fans for taking strong measures to voice their displeasure and making a stand.

The game itself was pretty much what most expected – Kansas City’s passing offense completely bombed and failed to complement another strong game from Jamaal Charles. Matt Cassel put up poor stats in the first half, and Brady Quinn failed to do any better in the second half. The Chiefs only committed one turnover all game – a Peyton Hillis fumble that didn’t cost the team any points when the Bengals missed a long field goal. The problem was Kansas City didn’t force any turnovers, and this team simply cannot be competitive when it loses the turnover battle.

Defensively, the Chiefs let Andy Dalton pick the secondary apart all game, consistently moving the chains with quick throws to his talented receivers. A.J. Green had a big day receiving, and running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis had his best game of the season. Kansas City’s special teams even let the team down, as the Bengals converted a fake punt early in the game that lead to their go-ahead touchdown.

Kansas City is getting closer and closer to the top pick in the 2013 NFL draft. Not only are the Chiefs bad, they are banged up – both wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and left tackle Branden Albert left Sunday’s game with an injury. It looks like Chiefs fans now need to be concerned with three things: who will coach the team next year, who will be the team’s GM and which quarterback will the team select early in the draft?

Kansas City Chiefs - Cincinnati Bengals Preview

After losing to the Steelers in overtime, the Chiefs return home to host the Cincinnati Bengals (4-5), who are currently fighting for a playoff spot in a very even AFC. The game will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Kansas City had a great opportunity to knock off Pittsburgh last week, but several untimely penalties prevented the team from expanding an early lead. After making a brilliant throw to help the Chiefs force OT, quarterback Matt Cassel was picked off in the extra period which essentially ended the game. Turnovers have been the biggest reason why the Chiefs currently sit at 1-8. Jamaal Charles is quietly having another strong season, and Kansas City will need him to have a monster game to score points. The Chiefs receiving unit is very banged up, as Jonathan Baldwin is out with a concussion and leading receiver Dwayne Bowe has been limited by a hamstring injury.

Many Chiefs fans have speculated that Brady Quinn would get another shot at the starting quarterback role, but Matt Cassel has been officially named the starter for Sunday. Head coach Romeo Crennel has stated that Quinn is still recovering from his concussion and has not yet been cleared to play.

The Bengals are coming off their most impressive performance of the year, a 31-13 win over the defending champion New York Giants. Andy Dalton has become a solid NFL quarterback, and receiver A.J. Green has quickly become one of the league’s top wideouts. The Chiefs defense has not lived up to its preseason expectations, but it has the talent to keep the Bengals offense in check. Kansas City will likely need to force a few turnovers to slow down Dalton and Green and give its struggling offense a short field to work with.

The Chiefs proved last week that when they limit turnovers (Kansas City had zero during regulation) they can still compete with anyone. Still, it is hard to see this team repeating that type of performance two weeks in a row, especially with a banged up receiving unit. The Bengals are fighting for a playoff spot and have a lot of confidence, and also may be getting several good players back from injury. The Chiefs will likely need a few turnovers to pull this one out.

Chiefs Fall To Steelers In OT

Despite owning the worst record in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to fight. The team took the Pittsburgh Steelers to overtime last night, eventually falling 16-13.

The weather was downright terrible for this one, which had a big effect on both teams’ offenses. Kansas City took advantage of Pittsburgh’s stalled offense early, grabbing a 10-0 lead off a Jamaal Charles touchdown run and a chip shot field goal from Ryan Succop. However, the Steelers would answer with 13 consecutive points despite losing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to injury. The Chiefs had plenty of chances to extend their lead – Dwayne Bowe had a touchdown reception called back due to a questionable holding call, and Succop missed a short field goal moments later.

Kansas City put together its best drive of the season at the end of regulation, as Cassel converted a couple of clutch throws to move the chains. It appeared that Kansas City was finished after tight end Tony Moeaki was called for offensive pass interference, and the Chiefs faced a fourth and long around midfield. However, Cassel made one of the best throws of his career, stepping up in the pocket and drilling Bowe which gave Kansas City a first down and moved them into field goal range. Succop drilled a low field goal through the wind to force overtime, and it appeared that the Chiefs had all the momentum heading into the extra period.

In overtime, Cassel quickly went from hero to goat, as the maligned quarterback threw an interception on the Chiefs second play that Pittsburgh returned to the five yard line. The Steelers quickly booted the short field goal and escaped with a win, as Kansas City moved closer to the draft lottery.

The story for the Chiefs all season long has been turnovers, and it is no surprise that Kansas City was ultimately beaten due to a Cassel interception. Before Cassel’s overtime pick, the team hadn’t turned the ball over once against Pittsburgh, despite the rainy conditions. The Steelers are a playoff team that hasn’t lost at home all season, so the Chiefs deserve a lot of credit for putting up a great fight and nearly stealing a win. When this team doesn’t turn it over, it can still be competitive. Unfortunately, that seems to be asking a lot from Cassel.

Kansas City Chiefs - Pittsburgh Steelers Preview

Monday night football seems like a really bad idea for the Kansas City Chiefs, who have been an absolute disaster this season and are currently tied for the worst record in the NFL. The entire country will get to watch the Chiefs take on a strong Pittsburgh Steelers team that hasn’t lost a Monday night home game in over 20 years.

The biggest storyline regarding Monday night’s game is former Chiefs coach Todd Haley facing off against his former team. Haley was fired during the season last year, despite leading the Chiefs to a division title the previous season and maintaining a decent product on the field despite a slew of devastating injuries. Chiefs fans now know the truth – Haley simply did not get along with Scott Pioli, who has quickly established a reputation as one of the worst general managers in professional football. Many fans wish Haley was still the head coach, as Romeo Crennel has looked absolutely clueless running the ship this season and has to shoulder a good portion of the blame for the team’s terrible first half of the season.

Matt Cassel will get the start at quarterback, and actually has played decently since returning to the starting role when Brady Quinn went down with an injury. The Chiefs lead the league with 29 turnovers, which has been the biggest factor in their historically bad season. Pittsburgh’s defense has played well recently, and the team will have to play mistake-free football in order to put enough points on the board to win.

The Steelers got off to a poor start this season, but have since rallied to win three in a row. Last week, the team defeated the reigning Superbowl champion New York Giants, and the offense seems to be clicking under Haley and veteran Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh defeated Kansas City last season, 13-9.

The Steelers are banged up and missing a few key players and it is entirely possible that they will overlook the Chiefs a bit. Expect Kansas City to put up a better fight than most predict, but winning a Monday night game in Pittsburgh will require a near-perfect performance to pull off.

Chargers Blow Out Chiefs - Pioli & Crennel Must Go

The latest embarrassing episode of the Chiefs 2012 season came last night, when Kansas City was throttled on national television by their division rivals, the San Diego Chargers. The team committed four turnovers and let the game slip away in a disastrous fourth quarter, in which the Chiefs were outscored 2103.

Turnovers have been the biggest problem for the Chiefs all season, and the stats at this point are comical. Quarterback Matt Cassel has more turnovers than every team in the NFL save the Dallas Cowboys, despite missing nearly two games’ worth of action due to injury. As a team, the Chiefs have committed more turnovers in the first eight games of the season than any NFL team in the last 15 years. When you can’t protect the football and routinely give the other team great field position, you are going to lose.

Last night’s game was bad, but it is time for Kansas City Chiefs fans to look at the bigger picture here. The Chiefs General Manager, Scott Pioli, has completely failed. Pioli has drafted poorly and missed on most first and second round picks, has made poor free-agent signings and has assembled a team that is not very good. Throw in a coach who appears to be clueless, and you have a recipe for disaster. Why exactly did Romeo Crennel get another head coaching opportunity after being terrible in Cleveland? Because he beat a Green Bay team last year that had wrapped up a home field advantage and had nothing to play for? Romeo Crennel is a better option than Todd Haley, who won the division three years ago and kept a depleted roster competitive last season? The list of poor decisions this franchise has made just goes on and on.

The team needs to absolutely clean house and spend some money to find a solid GM and coach. The good news is that Kansas City should have some high picks in next year’s draft. The Chiefs need to trade the veterans that don’t want to be here anymore (Dwayne Bowe) for draft picks and give the next GM something to work with.

Chiefs Lose Another Home Game To The Raiders

One of the saddest things that has come with the demise of the Kansas City Chiefs organization is how poorly the team has played at Arrowhead Stadium, once considered one of the toughest places to play in the country. Kansas City lost to Oakland on Sunday, the Raiders’ sixth straight win over the Chiefs at Arrowhead.

The Chiefs are heading towards historically bad territory. For starters, the team has not led in regulation this season, the first time since 1940 that a team has gone this deep into the season without having a lead at any point in regulation play. The Chiefs lone win came in overtime over the lowly New Orleans Saints.

The biggest problem for the Chiefs continues to the turnovers – Kansas City committed four more on Sunday and now leads the league with 25 giveaways. Despite once again giving the ball away at will, the Chiefs had a few bright spots offensively. Matt Cassel replaced the injured Brady Quinn and had a decent outing, connecting on 20 of 30 attempts for 218 yards. Quinn looked awful before leaving the game with a head injury, suggesting that the coaching staff once again blew a personnel decision.

The biggest question mark from this game surrounds Jamaal Charles – the Chiefs top offensive weapon was given only five carries in the game, and head coach Romeo Crennel had no explanation as to why Charles wasn’t used more. Cassel ended up being the team’s leading rusher with 35 yards, and Peyton Hillis also received four carries.

There is no way to sugarcoat anything surrounding the Chiefs – this team is really bad and needs to fire its GM, head coach and his entire staff this offseason and start over. Kansas City fans can only hold onto the hope that the team’s next GM will not blow the Chiefs’ top draft pick in 2013, and that brighter days are ahead.

Chiefs Name Brady Quinn Starting Quarterback

Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel has announced that Brady Quinn will start for Kansas City on Sunday, when the team plays rival Oakland. Matt Cassel has been cleared to play following his concussion injury against Baltimore; however Cassel’s poor play to start the year has earned him a spot on the bench.

Cassel has been an enormous disappointment this season, throwing for only five touchdowns next to nine interceptions and a 66.2 QB rating. His fumbles and interceptions have routinely forced the Chiefs defense to defend a short field, and has neutralized a successful ground attack lead by the dynamic Jamaal Charles. To make matters worse, Cassel signed a huge six year, $63 million contract when he was brought to Kansas City by GM Scott Pioli, which makes his poor play even more frustrating to Chiefs fans.

Enter Brady Quinn, the former first round pick out of Notre Dame who has only 393 career pass attempts. Quinn’s career rating is only 65.4, and he has actually produced worse stats than Cassel when he has seen the field for the Chiefs this season. Quinn has shown some flashes of the talent that led to the Browns drafting him in the first round, and Chiefs fans have to hope that Quinn will improve as he gets more playing time. Crennel has stated that he hopes this move helps shakes things up a bit, and that he plans on sticking with Quinn for the foreseeable future.

The Chiefs have stated they are not giving up on Cassel, but this move seems to signify that his days in Kansas City are numbered. Since enjoying a pretty good season two years ago, Cassel hasn’t played well and cannot stay healthy. Is Quinn the answer? Probably not, but he has shown some flashes of arm strength that Cassel seems to lack. Cassel’s contract and play will likely lead to his exit at the end of the year, and Quinn now has a second chance to earn an NFL starting job.

Many also believe that the Chiefs could take a quarterback in next year’s draft, especially if the team continues to lose and finds itself with a top-five pick. It is very likely that the Chiefs could resign Quinn this offseason and let him compete with and help groom a rookie quarterback when the 2013 season begins.

Dwayne Bowe Pushing For Trade Out Of Kansas City

Reports are surfacing that Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is pushing hard for an exit from Kansas City. With the Chiefs tied for the worst record in the NFL, many predict that the team will deal Bowe in an effort to blow things up and gain a draft pick or young players in return.

This really shouldn’t be a surprise to Chiefs fans, as Bowe did not receive a long-term deal from the franchise in the off-season. Bowe was given the franchise tag, and reluctantly signed his deal just a few weeks before the regular season started. Now that the Chiefs are 1-5, there is no long-term contract binding Bowe to spend his future with a bad team. Bowe will also be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and at this point it seems like there is no chance of him signing a deal in Kansas City.

With Bowe’s days in Kansas City numbered, it makes sense that the team would trade him now to get something back in return. The biggest team being mentioned in trade rumors are the Miami Dolphins, who have some draft picks to deal after picking up extra second and third round picks by trading Vontae Davis and Brandon Marshall. The Dolphins have talent at running back and spent an early first-round pick on QB Ryan Tannehill, yet have few playmakers at receiver. Bowe would give Tannehill a big body to throw to, and would immediately push the Dolphins into the playoff picture. Miami is tied for first in the AFC East, and with how bad the entire AFC has been this season, they would have a great shot to make the postseason.

If the Chiefs make this move, it is clear they are planning for the future. The team already has a poor passing game, and losing its top wide out would cripple the KC offense. The Chiefs invested a first round pick two drafts ago in Jonathan Baldwin, however the young receiver hasn’t done much so far in Kansas City.

The Chiefs had an opportunity to wrap Bowe up this offseason, but failed to offer him a long-term deal. It is clear that Bowe will be leaving Kansas City once the regular season ends, and it is important for the Chiefs to get something of value in return.

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park Hosts USA World Cup Qualifying Match Tonight

The United States Men’s National team has a big game tonight against Guatemala, the semi-final round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. The match will take place at Kansas City’s LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, and will begin at 6 p.m.

The United States needs a win or a tie to advance to the finals. The Americans can also advance with a loss in the game based on the result of the Jamaica vs. Antigua and Barbuda match, but the US squad has made it known it intends to go for the win. USA found itself in this game after winning a critical World Cup qualifying match against Antigua and Barbuda 2-1, with both goals being scored by national team veteran Eddie Johnson.

LIVESTRONG has turned into one of the best venues to watch soccer in the nation, and Kansas City has slowly grown an impressive soccer fan base. A lot of the credit has to go to the success of Sporting Kansas City, which has become one of the best teams in major league soccer and is fueled by a terrific home crowd whenever it plays in KC.

With the Royals stuck in two decades of futility and the Chiefs looking like the worst team in the NFL this season (not to mention they haven’t won a playoff game since January of 1994) Kansas City fans should be grateful that they have Sporting KC and LIVESTRONG park. Chiefs Find New Low Against Bucs

It is a sad time to be Kansas City Chiefs fan, as the team continues to find new lows. The most recent came on Sunday, when Kansas City was blown out by the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 38-10. The loss drops the Chiefs record to 1-5 on the season.

Entering the game, it looked like Kansas City would have an opportunity to exploit a weak Tampa Bay offense. The Chiefs were coming off an impressive performance against the Baltimore Ravens, and the Bucs had struggled moving the ball this season. After limiting Tampa Bay to only seven points in the first half, Kansas City was lit up in the second half, and wound up surrendering three second half touchdowns and a field goal. Josh Freeman, who has struggled this season and most of his pro career (Freeman has a career rating of only 79), threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns and looked like a Pro Bowler.

Despite the defensive struggles, Chiefs fans have to be the most frustrated with the offense’s performance. Brady Quinn struggled at times, which is to be expected considering this was his first start since 2009. Quinn did make a couple of good throws, and both of his interceptions really weren’t his fault. A lot of blame needs to be directed at the coaching staff, who dialed up a vanilla game plan despite the fact that Tampa Bay has struggled against the pass this season and lost its best cornerback, Aqib Talib, to a suspension. The Bucs were expecting the dink-and-dunk passes and runs, and with no vertical game, the offense managed only 3 points. Quinn may be rusty, but the coaching staff needs to get aggressive and play to win, rather than playing not to lose. Especially against a struggling unit that was without its best player.

Kansas City’s lone touchdown came on a great special teams play, as running back Shaun Draughn blocked a Buccaneer punt that was recovered by Edgar Jones. Jones made a nice play to get into the end zone, which at the time cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 21-10.

At this point, it is apparent that the Chiefs are heading for a disastrous season that will likely cost GM Scott Pioli and possibly head coach Romeo Crennel their jobs. Pioli absolutely deserves the ax, as he has had four years to build a team and has failed to put a winning product on the field. Crennel is a good defensive coordinator, but has not been successful as a head coach in the NFL. If the team had a top offensive coordinator and a good quarterback, Crennel might not be in the mess he finds himself in.

Unfortunately for Kansas City, the team picked up a victory earlier this season over the Saints. Since the team isn’t getting anywhere near the playoffs, it needs to get the best pick possible in next year’s draft to find someone who can make an immediate difference to this team. It is a sad reality, but winning games no longer does this team any good.
