The Zeros LIVE! at The Power and Light District - Kansas City News
If you don't feel like fighting the crowds at The American Royal BBQ 2011, you can head down to the Power and Light District and catch The Zeros, Kansas City's favorite 80's tribute band. The Zeros put on a great show, performing only "new wave" 80's music, none of the idiotic 80's hair band music. The Zeros hit the stage around 10pm and will rock until they shut the place down. The Power and Light District is losing momentum as it's owners, Cordesh Inc. continue to evict businesses in the district including the most recent closing of Raglan Road Irish Pub in September.

Waldo Rapist Bernard Jackson Receives 18 Life Sentences - Kansas City News
It all started in 1977 when Bernard Jackson was convicted of his first rape at the age of 19. 6 years later, Jackson was released and he continued to torture, rob and rape women in the Waldo area until 1985 when Bernard was convicted of rape again and sentenced to 30 years. Jackson was then paroled in December of 2008, and was subsequently charged with additional rapes that occurred after his 2008 release. Bernard Jackson, a.k.a. the Waldo Rapist was sentenced today to 18 consecutive life sentences by assistant district attorney Ted Hunt for the rapes that Jackson committed back in the 1980's in light of new evidence that has been analyzed. Bernard Jackson's attorney, Carie Allen looked like some kind of bad joke today, her hair was fried out and she actually was seen laughing out loud several times during the case, yes, Carie, murder and rape are very funny topics, and your client is a ghetto stank piece of shit that belongs in jail - FOREVER.

Royals Season Comes to and End

The Kansas City Royals have completed another losing season, leaving only 5 teams in the entire league with worse records than the Royals. Although this season ended on a positive note, with the Royals stringing together several wins and many players stepping up and improving their batting averages and ERAs, it was still just another losing season for a team that hasn't seen a decent win / loss record since 1985. Ah, thank God for the 1985 Royals, George Brett, Willie Wilson, the good old days...

I suppose the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about is David Glass and the way he refuses to spend money on quality players, and furthermore, the players who emerge from Kansas City as stars are immediately traded away.

The Kansas City Royals are talking a big game right now about how their farm team approach is ready for harvest in 2012, and that they are predicting a playoff appearance by 2013. KANSAS CITY, MO (January 25, 2011) – Baseball America, baseball’s preeminent authority on minor league prospects, has rated the Kansas City Royals farm system as the best in all of baseball in the soon-to-be-released 2011 Prospect Handbook.

"The Royals have one of the deepest and most talented farm systems in recent memory,” said Jim Callis, Executive Editor at Baseball America. “It's unusual to see a system with three stud hitters like Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Wil Myers, or four quality lefties like John Lamb, Mike Montgomery, Danny Duffy and Chris Dwyer, and the Royals have both. To show how highly we regard the Royals system, we ranked it No. 1 before the Zack Greinke trade, which netted more top prospects. "Seven of the Royals’ top 10 prospects will be in Major League Spring Training camp next month in Surprise, Ariz. The group includes first baseman Eric Hosmer (ranked #1), third baseman Mike Moustakas (#3) and left-handed pitcher John Lamb (#4).

The Royals have been nurturing a great farm team system that is creating future star players, but how do we know that isn't just another way for Glass to make money? At what point will the Royals start trading away their star players, as they have done with every star player we've ever had since the 1990's? I started to get suspicious the minute they renovated Kauffman Stadium last season.

It is no accident that they turned Royals stadium into a giant BAR with the new renovations. Fans can now go to a game and not even watch the game, they can go to one of the many indoor bars, go watch a live band, pretty much anything but pay attention to just the game itself. Glass figures that if all there is to do at a Royals game is actually watch the Royals, then the fans would go home thus spending less money on concessions. Glass has figured out a way to make more money off the ever-losing Royals franchise and I think that they have no intention of EVER spending money on players, thus eliminating us from the big race indefinitely.

But hey, I was lucky enough to actually ATTEND the big games in 1985, so I will always have that. I'm sorry that you young fans will probably never see Kansas City in a celebration of that magnitude in your lifetime. At least we will be able to watch the great players come through Kansas City next season for the All Star Game 2012.

Hollywood Casino Kansas City

Kansas City will be adding yet another casino in early 2012 when the Hollywood Casino opens up at the Kansas Speedway. Penn National Gaming, Inc. has been taking over and opening new casinos all across the United States, mostly building casinos in poor ghetto neighborhoods (i.e. Kansas City, Kansas) and Hollywood Casino will be yet another link in Penn National Gaming's chain. The Hollywood Casino 400 race is an advertising ploy to introduce the new casino's presence in Kansas City.

Tony DiPardo's Daughter Patti Keeps the Music Going at Arrowhead

Over the years the entertainment has changed several times at Arrowhead Stadium. In the very early days when the Kansas City Chiefs first arrived here from Dallas (where they were known as the Dallas Texans) they had a small marching band who actually sat in the stands and performed the type of music that you might hear at a college game today. This band had many incarnations and was founded and led by trumpet player extraordinaire Tony DiPardo. DiPardo led The TD Pack Band, then the Zing Band and finally back to the TD Pack Band until his death on January 27th, 2011.

Since Tony DiPardo's death, his daughter Patti has continued to preserve the spirit of her father and the music entertainment at Arrowhead Stadium to this day. Patti took over as the band leader for her father in 1989, and when the owners retired the on-field stadium band to make room for more seats Patti continued to direct the music in what is called the Founder's Club at Arrowhead Stadium during home games. The Founder's Club features Kansas City dueling piano favorite Spike Blake and continues to energize the stadium with great music.

The spirit of Tony DiPardo lives on through his daughter Patti, who has dedicated over 3 decades of her life to providing quality entertainment during Chiefs games at Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs Chargers 2011 Kansas City News

The Chiefs Chargers rivalry continues today at 3:05pm when the banged up and limping Chiefs take on the San Diego Chargers in their home town. The Chiefs are playing with a skeleton crew after losing star running back Jamaal Charles, tight end Tony Moeaki and starting strong safety Eric Barry. With those players missing from the Kansas City Chiefs lineup, it doesn't leave much left on the field. Matt Cassel is an average quarterback at best, and although Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin might be talented receivers, it doesn't matter if the quarterback can't get them the ball. Cassel made a few feeble attempts to throw the ball down the field last week vs the Lions, but Cassel's long pass attempts looked wobbly and weak and the receivers had to halt their route and turn around and come back to the floppy passes to try to make a catch. This is not the type of quarterback that you need to win games. Your team's quarterback should be able to throw the ball far down the field with zip and confidence or the opposing defenses will never respect the quarterback's arm and will be able to stack up against the run. It's that simple. As poorly as Cassel throws the ball, Jamaal Charles wouldn't have stood much of a chance anyway as defenses would have been keying on him heavily.

The Chargers are also a little banged up, with Antonio Gates injured and on the sideline for this match. Look for Vincent Jackson to make some big plays behind the arm of Philip Rivers, and possibly some rushing yards from 2nd year running back Ryan Matthews.

As always with Kansas City Chiefs football games, if the Chiefs can somehow get into the end zone first, they stand a better chance to stay in this game. But with the incredible passing skills of Philip Rivers, the Chiefs really don't stand a chance. The Chiefs continue to build towards the "Suck for Luck" losing campaign. If the Chiefs can manage to lose all of their games this year, they will get the first pick of the 2012 draft and have a shot at getting a real quarterback in Andrew Luck. Let's hope that happens as we need to get rid of Matt Cassel immediately.

Antenna TV Kansas City by Fox 4 TV

Great news for those of you who have told Time Warner Cable to stick it, basic television now has a great new station: Antenna TV! A product of Fox 4 TV in Kansas City, Antenna TV has a great line up of classic television shows and classic movies. Antenna TV runs 24 hours per day and offers some of television's greatest shows that ever aired. Obviously modeled after Nick at Night, channel 4.2 is quickly becoming a household favorite in Kansas City.

Time Warner Cable is a complete rip off. If you currently have Time Warner Cable it may interest you to know that you should not be paying any more than $34.99 per month for digital standard cable (70+ channels). That's right, and if you're in your first year of service with Time Warner Cable, then you should only be paying $29.99 for digital standard cable (after 12 months the price goes up $5 to $34.99). If you are paying any more than this, you are getting ripped off and you need to call Time Warner Cable and complain. You may have to be tricky and tell them that you want to cancel all service at first so that they will transfer you to the "retention department" where those operators have the authority to offer good deals. If you are speaking to a regular customer service agent, they will not have the authority to offer any deals, you have to say that you want to cancel service and then they will transfer you to the retention department where they should make you an offer. If this doesn't work, try cancelling service completely, then wait a couple days and sign up for service using someone else's name (your spouse, other adult in the house, etc.) - they will offer you the new customer deal of $29.99, then, every 12 months, just cancel again and then reapply with the name you used 12 months ago.

In our case, we just cancelled Time Warner Completely, signed up with AT&T internet service ($29.99 per month and is TWICE as fast as Time Warner) and went to Best Buy, bought a high powered TV antenna for $39.99 and bingo, our TV and internet bills total $29.99 per month - and that's it. The HD that you can pick up now with just an antenna is much better quality than the HD that you get with a cable package. Not to mention that if you have internet service ($29.99 per month with AT&T) then you can get access to NetFlix which allows you to watch almost any movie and/or TV show you want.

Now back to the great new TV station, Antenna TV, which in Kansas City is located on channel 4.2. The Antenna TV programs include such great classics as Three's Company, Married with Children, Sanford and Son, Good Times, All in the Family, Soap, and even the classic lost TV series featuring Ted Knight, Too Close for Comfort. The only drawback so far is that they show the lamest show ever "Mad About You" - sheesh, how did that stupid show stay on the air so long? But either way, here at Kansas City News we would like to welcome Antenna TV to Kansas City!

The Automatics Band Kansas City Celebrate 10 Years

Several local Kansas City bands have amazing history and credits to their name. Today, 10 years after they broke up, we celebrate some of the accomplishments of one of the most powerful funk bands that has ever performed in Kansas City, The Automatics. Here are a few things that this amazing horn powered band accomplished in just a few short years:
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno - The Automatics (then called the BWB band) performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno
The White House - The Automatics have performed at The White House
Jerry Seinfeld - They opened for Jerry Seinfeld when he performed at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada
ESPN - The Automatics were featured on ESPN as the headline act for the NCAA Championship game.
Kansas Speedway - The Automatics performed with Brooks and Dunn at the Kansas Speedway on stage together.
Dick Clark's American Bandstand - The Automatics performed for the walk of fame Dick Clark's American Bandstand
The Automatics were made up of the perfect combination of Kansas City musicians including Johnny C (guitar / vox), Randy Malone (saxophone / vox), Shawn Cassity (trumpet / vox), Brian Reynolds (drums / vox), Adam Blue (keys / vox), and last but certainly not least, Greg "Coko" Henderson (bass / vox). They played relentlessly and they played whatever the hell they wanted.
They played as loud as any touring band, and they partied their asses off in the process. If a venue owner tried to tell them to turn down, drummer Brian Reynolds would happily point to the large sticker on his bass drum which read "If It's Too Loud, You're Too OLD". But if it was a concert-like environment you wanted, The Automatics delivered; a horn section that would peel your face off, a bass player in Coko Henderson that would make any white person who played bass just want to quit playing the bass on the spot, and a combined attitude of "fuck off, we're going to play, and we're going to play really loud". They don't make bands like that any more, ever since the acoustic strumming hippie acts have hit Kansas City, but we can always hope that the style of the Automatics is replicated sometime in the near future, or then again, maybe a reunion concert? Ay boys? Here's a slideshow video of one of the Automatics unforgettable performances:

Jamaal Charles Out For Season Chiefs Fans Panic

The Kansas City Chiefs officially announced that running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season with a torn ACL, the same injury that cost the Chiefs Tony Moeaki and Eric Barry. Jamaal Charles was the most important player on the Kansas City Chiefs and his season ending injury is going to have a massive impact on the rest of the Chiefs 2011 season.

On a seemingly common run, Jamaal Charles was on his way out of bounds, with no defenders in site, planted his left foot awkwardly on the sideline, and tore his ACL resulting in a season ending injury. ACL injuries are tricky because as an athlete, if you have no prior history of knee injuries, you don't concern yourself with body movements that may cause an ACL injury. As far as Jamaal Charles knew, he could manipulate his body an any direction, make sudden stops, or plant his foot firmly with his upper body in an awkward position (as was the case in this injury). As an athlete with no prior knee injuries, you just don't think about being careful. As a body ages, the knees are the first to go when you are an athlete that's major function is to run, stop, juke and plant. If you don't know your body's limitations, you are most likely going to blow out a knee. ACL injuries often occur as a result of a firm planting of the foot, with little or no "give" from the playing surface. This is why AstroTurf has been removed from almost all sports environments, because AstroTurf "grabs" the feet of the athletes, promoting ACL injuries.

The Chiefs have been cursed this season with THREE major ACL injuries, and Jamaal Charles was probably the final blow to a team that was doomed from the start with or without Jamaal Charles, Eric Barry and Tony Moeaki.

Jamaal Charles was put on injured reserve today, leaving the Chiefs with only 52 players on their active roster. We can expect the Chiefs to sign someone off of the waiver wire sometime this week, most likely a running back.
