MU Basketball KU Border War February 4th, 2012 8pm Central

At 8pm February 4th, 2012, at Mizzou's home stadium in Columbia, Missouri, the 4th ranked MU basketball team will face the 8th ranked KU basketball team. With less than one hour away from the Border War basketball game between KU and MU, KU players are getting ready to play one of the most important games of the season. As the NCAA Big 12 basketball teams rally for position, tonight's game could (and will) determine which team will sit on top in first place of the Big 12. There is also a possibility of a three-way tie for first, depending on the results of the 2012 Border War between MU and KU.

Thomas Robinson is a standout player for KU basketball and is most noted for his play on the court but also for the loss of his grandparents and mother within one month's time. Robinson's mother died of a heart attack at the age of 37 after losing both of her parents only weeks before. The KU Jayhawks honored Robinson with a moment of silence in a game on January 22nd, 2011. Of Robinson's character, head coach Bill Self said "Thomas lost his grandmother at the very end of December, he lost his grandfather on Sunday and lost his mother on Friday night. For him to even be out there [on the court] is remarkable."

This Border War between MU and KU is going to be a good one because both teams are rated in the top ten and if the right things happen the result of this game will cause a three way tie in the league for first place. Mizzou basketball fans have been camped out all night in front of Mizzou Arena, waiting for the ESPN analysts and other media hype institutions. The stadium opened up minutes ago and there is no doubt that this will be a sold out event. Missouri enters the match up with the better squad, but both teams have been performing poorly as of late, losing to or barely defeating inept teams. MU will be washing it's hands of the Big 12 in July and heading to the bigger and better stage of the SEC, leaving KU behind to continue to battle in the trenches with the mutants. Regardless of the outcome of tonight's Border War between KU and MU, Mizzou will be victorious overall in the Border War history, thus closing that chapter for good.

Mizzou Takes Border War from KU One Final Time

In the final Border War between the MU and KU football squads, it was no surprise that Mizzou was victorious over KU once again on a chilly Saturday afternoon on November 26th, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Missouri Tigers effortlessly trampled the Kansas Jayhawks in a 24-10 victory to forever seal the vault on the Border War with a total victory record of 56-55-9 over KU since the Border War games started on October 31st, 1891. The MU / KU Border War was the longest living rival in football history, and it ended abruptly with the Mizzou victory on Saturday.

The reason that the Border War will cease to exist in the future is due to the recent announcement by Mizzou that it would be leaving the Big 12 for the SEC effective July 1st, 2012. KU fans were extremely upset with the decision by MU to leave the Big 12, and the city of Kansas City will certainly lose revenue with the loss of the annual game that would usually fill Arrowhead Stadium to capacity. In 2011, attendance was only 47,000 due to an absolutely pathetic KU football team, who only won a couple of games during the season and were expected to lose in embarrassing fashion to the dominating MU football team. MU fans showed up in droves and filled in their side of the stadium as usual, but KU fans pouted and decided to stay home instead of attend the game and be ruthlessly taunted by MU fans.

In 2012, Mizzou will move up to a better league in the SEC, and face more suitable rivals as KU was unable to provide much competition, losing the Border War series overall in the span of over 100 years. One reason that the MU / KU rivalry was so intense is that most KU fans live in the city of Overland Park, Kansas which directly "borders" the city of Kansas City, Missouri. Many bars would fill up along the border of the state line that divides Kansas and Missouri, where MU fans and KU fans would talk smack and taunt each other during the border war games, which almost always ended in an MU victory. This final Border War game was a great game overall, and ended a century-long rivalry between the Missouri Tigers and the perpetually over matched KU Jayhawks.

First Border War of the Year Could be a Lopsided Affair

On August 21, 1863, Captain William Quantrill and his band of raiders sacked, burned, and murdered in the city of Lawrence, KS as depicted in the photo. The Missouri Tigers will come to Lawrence this evening with considerably less firepower than Quantrill did 150 years ago. Though formidable at home, the Tigers have been less than stellar on the road. Missouri has only won one true road game, and that was against a woeful Oregon team, the Tigers are 0-4 on the road in Conference Play including loses to unranked Colorado and Oklahoma State.

Mizzou has not won in Lawrence since Norm Stewart's last year in 1999. That's fitting because no one took the rivalry more seriously than Norm did. Of course, he famously would never stay the night in the State of Kansas, choosing instead to stay in Kansas City and driving over for the game in the morning.

If Missouri is to have a chance tonight, they need to shoot the ball well and get to the free throw line. In Mizzou's last road game against Oklahoma State they were out shot at the line by 43-16. That's not going to win you many games. On a bright note for Missouri, Josh Selby appears to be out for the game, and there is no way Brady Morningstar scores 19 again. As much as it pains me to say it, I still think the Jayhawks win big tonight, they just have too much talent for the Tigers to overcome on the road. They can still SUCK IT though!
