Kansas City Roofing Company Gives Firefighter New Roof

Ceremony awarding and recognizing 19-year active firefighter Joe Sullivan to take place Monday at Leawood Fire Station

KANSAS CITY, April 9, 2012 — Gahagan-Eddy, LLC., a Prairie Village building and roofing company, will announce and recognize the recipient of a new roof as the culmination of the Gahagan-Eddy Roof Giveaway in celebration of the company’s ten years serving Kansas City as was first reported by Kansas City News earlier this spring. In this Kansas City charity event, Lieutenant Joe Sullivan, a 19-year active firefighter with the Leawood Fire Department, and his family were selected as the winner of the new roof. A ceremony recognizing Sullivan and awarding him the new roof will take place Monday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m. at the Leawood Fire Station located at 127^th St. and Mission Rd. 

Upon learning he had been nominated and selected as the winner of the Gahagan-Eddy Roof Giveaway, Sullivan said humbly, “There has to be someone more deserving. Well, I’ll be up on that roof helping you out.”

Sullivan was born in Kansas City and married Linda Zimmerman, also a firefighter at the time, in December 1998. The two met at an EMT class, their lives having intersected on the premise of serving others, and have continued this endeavor throughout their lives together. They settled in Sullivan’s parents’ home in Kansas City, Kan., which has sheltered generations of Sullivans over the course of 40 years. In 2004, the two became the proud foster parents of three children providing them a warm, loving home built on the enduring love of the Sullivan family.

Shortly after welcoming the children into their home, life took a turn for the worst for the Sullivans. Linda was diagnosed with an advanced stage of breast cancer and while battling the disease with treatments, Sullivan kept the family going. While Linda was healing from surgery and chemo, Sullivan would lay the infants with Linda to be close to their “mom” – as this was ultimately the plan, to permanently adopt these children as their own, a wish that did come true. Then in December 2011, Sullivan re-proposed to Linda in hopes to renew their vows this spring. 

Becky Craig, the coworker and family friend who nominated Sullivan for the Gahagan-Eddy Roof Giveaway, explained, “Now a single income family, as Linda is no longer able to work, Joe is the sole caregiver for his wife in addition to caring for his children, who are the light of his life. Joe carries this burden quietly with dignity. If you speak to him you would never know he has this enormous weight on his shoulders and in his heart.”

Interim Fire Chief Steve Duncan shared, “He is a quiet person that never complains. Many nights I would walk into the apparatus room and find him working on equipment long after others had settled in for the night. Any assignment given was completed quickly and never required follow up. Joe can always be found doing the right thing even when nobody is looking.”

While filled with love, the roof of their home has aged, leaks, and is not providing a sufficient cover for their family. 

“We are proud to provide Joe and his family with a new roof, easing his mind of one thing – keeping the structure safe,” Bryce Gahagan explained. “As a public servant, a caring husband, and an outstanding father, he deserves this. Joe is a great man and, as Linda often says, ‘After many bad things happen, something good is bound to happen.’ We are excited to today help out with that good.”

George Brett Named Ambassador For 2012 MLB All-Star Summer - Kansas City News

George Brett has been named the ambassador for the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Summer. Brett, one of the most decorated players in Kansas City Royals history, will participate in several events leading up to the All-Star game.

Brett will headline the MLB All-Star FanFest from July 6-10 and will manage the United States’ team in the All-Star futures game on July 8. This will be the hall of famer’s second appearance as team USA’s manager. He will also play in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game on July 8 and will serve as the official race starter for the MLB All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run.

With the 2012 All-Star game taking place in Kansas City, there is no better representative the Royals could have selected than Brett. The baseball legend spent his entire 21 year career with Kansas City, and is a great representative of an era when the Royals contended for championships and weren’t viewed as a bottom feeder. The All-Star game and the week’s festivities will give Kansas City the opportunity to showcase some of the club’s biggest heroes, and Brett certainly fits that bill.

Humane Day 2012 Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation

Humane Day 2012, supported by the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, will be held Wednesday, April 18th at The Capitol Building 3rd Floor Rotunda in Jefferson City, Missouri between 10am and 2pm. The purpose of Humane Day 2012 by the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation is to get legislators to hear from organizations that have been impacted by shelter licensing fees and individuals that believe these fees are detrimental. Bills that are up for discussion are:

Bills HB 1654 & HB 1934 - Exempts Shelters from License Fees

Several significant bills have been introduced in the 2012 legislative session to help the animals. Two pieces of animal friendly legislation announced this session were HB 1654 by Representative Jeanne Kirkton (D-Webster Groves) and HB 1934 by Representative Noel Torpey (R-Independence). Both of these bills would eliminate license fees on non-profit shelters and rescue groups. These charitable entities have been exempt from paying a license fee in the past in recognition of their important role of keeping stray animals off the streets and protecting the public from disease and other health problems that result from the irresponsible acts of others. Unfortunately, in 2010, the legislature extended fees for commercial breeders and kennels to non-profit animal shelters. HB 1654 & HB 1934 would reverse this onerous tax and would once again exempt shelters and rescues which provide a community service. This will allow such entities to dedicate all of their assets to the care of animals.

HB 1934 also contains language that would address the issue of individuals selling dogs for a profit and claiming to be a rescue. Rep. Torpey's bill would give the Director of Agriculture the authority to deny or revoke a license of any animal shelter, "if it is determined by the Director that the applicant or the licensee unreasonably profits from the charges for adoption or sales of the animals." Hopefully, this will help rein in the problem of unscrupulous breeders and sellers of dogs masquerading as rescues.

We commend Representative Kirkton and Representative Torpey for introducing legislation to relieve shelters and rescue from these taxes. Legislators need to hear that dogs seized in dog fighting cases need to receive a second chance and a disposition hearing within 30 days.

HUMANE DAY 2012 - ISSUES OF PRIORITY TO THE ALLIANCE THIS SESSION

DOG FIGHTING DISPOSTION: Would allow for a disposition hearing of dogs seized by law enforcement authorities if there is probable cause that such dogs were subject to dog fighting. A judge would have to approve such disposition. This would allow such dogs to be removed from a dangerous environment and be given the opportunity for rehabilitation and adoption. This disposition could take place within thirty (30) days so that these dogs would not have to be held indefinitely. Such a law will encourage law enforcement officials to investigate dog fighting which is still common in Missouri. Currently, dogfight complaints and tips receive little, if any, follow-up as it is cost prohibitive for municipalities to house and care for fighting dogs for an extended period of time. Due process would be ensured as three (3) elected officials would have to be involved in such decisions: the Sheriff, District Attorney, and a Judge. (See SB903)

TAXES ON SHELTERS AND RESCUES: Would eliminate ACFA license fees on non-profit shelters and rescue groups. These charitable entities have been exempt from paying a license fee in the past in recognition of their important role in keeping stray animals off the streets and protecting the public from disease and other health problems that result from the irresponsible acts of others. Rescues and shelters provide a community service and should be exempt from such taxes once again to allow them to dedicate all of their assets to the care of animals. (See HB 1654 and HB1934).

Fuzzy's Taco Shop 103rd and Wornall New Kansas City Restaurant - Kansas City News

There's a new Kansas City Restaurant in town!  Fuzzy's Taco Shop just opened at 103rd and Wornall across from the busiest Quik Trip in the Universe.  No affiliation to the Fuzzy's Bar that is now Ugly Joe's, Fuzzy's Taco Shop is a nice little spot where you can enjoy some creative mexican food and while you're at it have a cold beer.  The new restaurant features large TVs broadcasting sports events, etc. and it has a certain sports bar feel to it.  Just in time for the 2012 MLB All Star Game that will hit Kansas City this year!

Once you get the hang of it, the menu at Fuzzy's Taco Shop is fairly easy to grasp.

Tacos
You can order your tacos in three different ways; crispy, regular, or Habanero soft.  You then choose from fish, shrimp, shredded beef, special ground beef, chicken, shredded pork, grilled veggie, and amazingly enough, crawfish tacos!  We didn't have the courage to try the crawfish tacos, but we did enjoy the special ground beef tacos, the shredded pork tacos and the grilled fish tacos, all which were excellent.

Grilled Sandwiches
Something you won't find at most taco stand restaurants, grilled sandwiches.  You can choose from grilled veggie, shredded pork, fish, shredded beef or chicken.  Grilled sandwiches from Fuzzy's Taco Shop are prepared on Telera bread, which is a bread created in the Dominican Republic.  We did not try the sandwiches, but they sounded delicious.

The rest of the menu is fairly straightforward, chips and salsa, fried rice, refried beans, black beans, Borracho beans, and a curious Latin fried potatoes.  Fuzzy's also has a few different kinds of taco salads.  We did not know what to expect from the looks of the place from the outside, the window is just kind of "painted on" with random pictures of little blue fish saying "eat me", and of course that little strip mall on 103rd and Wornall has not had much success as a whole, even with the incredible amount of passing traffic it gets from the Quik Trip across the street.   We wish Fuzzy's Taco Shop much success as the food is a much better alternative to the nasty fast food places that are everywhere!  Combined with the addition of the Italian Mamma Leone's Pizza in Red Bridge, Fuzzy's Taco Shop is yet another option for fast food rather than having to crawl to the grease factories like McD's and Sonic.  On another note, it appears that Burger King on Red Bridge and Holmes has closed.  No big loss there.  With the 2012 MLB All Star Game coming to Kansas City this year, there will be an additional $50 million dollars in revenue coming to local Kansas City businesses, so hopefully Fuzzy's Taco Shop will be one of them.

MLB All Star Game 2012 at Kauffman Stadium - Charity Gala

As the MLB All Star Game 2012 gets closer, here at Kansas City News we will keep you updated on all of the events as they happen.  The latest news on the 2012 All Star Game is about a charity fundraiser for the Negro League's Baseball Museum at 18th and Vine.  The Kansas City charity event will be called "Buck, BBQ and Baseball" - Buck for the late Buck O'Neil, BBQ because this event will feature some of The American Royal BBQ Contest's best BBQ, and finally Baseball because a portion of the proceeds from this charity event will go towards the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

This Kansas City charity event will be held during one of the biggest weekends that Kansas City has seen, or will see in the future as it is the first time the MLB All Star Game has graced our fair city since 1973.  It is predicted that the MLB All Star Game will bring around $50 Million dollars worth of revenue to Kansas City during that week, most of the revenue going to local Kansas City hotels, and Kansas City restaurants.  So far, the Buck, BBQ and Baseball charity event is going to feature great BBQ, a VIP party that will feature appearances by famous baseball players to be named later, and a performance by Kansas City jazz saxophone legend Darryl Terrell.  The VIP party will be held inside that actual baseball museum itself.  After the VIP party, guests will join together in the main hall of the museum event center and there will be live music by The KC All Stars, winners of KMBC-TV's "Best Band in Kansas City".

The Buck, BBQ and Baseball charity event has already received backing from several community leaders including Senator Roy Blunt, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver and The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.  The MLB All Star Game film crew will also be shooting footage of the event and the museum itself to use during cutaway shots during the Nationally televised All Star Game events including the Home Run Derby, the Future's Game, the Legends and Celebrity Softball Game, and of course the big day, The MLB All Star Game.
