Soria Records 25th Straight Save

Bookmark and Share
As the Royals' dreadful season nears the finish line, one player has stood out all year as a bright spot for the team. Closer Joakim Soria converted his 25th straight save, breaking the old consecutive saves record for the Royals previously set by Jeff Montgomery in 1993. For the season, Soria has converted 32 of 34 chances.

After pitching a no-decision gem last week, Zach Grienke made it clear he was not willing to sit around and wait for the Royals to undertake another rebuilding project. While it is hard to blame Grienke's stance, it will be interesting to see what the off-season brings for Soria. The Royals have traded many of its productive veterans to build for the future, however Soria is still young and could provide a long-term answer at closer or eventually be moved to a starting position.

Given that Soria has not publicly demanded a trade or let his frustrations with the organization known, the Royals should attempt to lock him up for the long haul. Having a dominant closer is a necessity for any competitor, and Soria is one of the best in the game. While the Royals keep rebuilding, at least Kansas City fans can enjoy watching Soria dominate.

Chiefs Falcons Preseason Game 1 - Are We Going to Throw Long?

Chiefs Falcons Preseason Game 1
Are we planning on throwing long anytime this season?

It doesn't matter what happens for the rest of this Chiefs preseason game vs. the Atlanta Falcons, it baffles me that the Chiefs did not attempt one single pass over 15 yards while the starters were in.  Cassel's only attempt at a pass of any noteworthy length was an incomplete pass to tight end Pope across the middle.

The only teams that win in this league are teams that can air it out LONG down the field.  The fact that the Chiefs didn't even ATTEMPT to throw the ball long leads me to believe that we're in for a long and fruitless year.  It is simply not possible to win football games without throwing long.  The defense will abandon coverage and close in on our semi-weak running offense.  The Chiefs are going to have to stretch the field in order to keep the heat off of our running game.

The fact that this is only a preseason game doesn't matter - they still have to get the ball down the field to Bowe or Chambers at least once.
Standouts from tonight's preseason game are Dexter McCluster, who ran the ball successfully for the most part and caught several passes to the wings - short passes that is.  The Chiefs also tried to run a draw up the middle with McCluster - quite possibly the dumbest call of the game.  Dexter McCluster is only 5' 7", 165 pounds, he's NOT going to be able to run up the middle...sheesh.  Another standout was Jamaal Charles who did his usual scampering about for a few yards.

Terrible performances brought to you by Leonard Pope who does not seem to be able to catch the ball at all.  He had two passes bounce off his chest.  Thomas Jones either really sucks or the plays that they had him run were worthless, either way he was suck-o.

All in all this preseason game was quite possibly the most boring football game I've ever witnessed and the Chiefs had better learn to stretch the field with long passes or they are going to lose - a lot.

Deadbeat Dad Breaks Legs Avoiding Child Support

Bookmark and Share
Those that don't believe in Karma may want to read the following. Or just read it if you want a good laugh. Ronald "Boobie" McIntyre owed almost $6,000 in unpaid child support. When the police came to collect the money, Boobie jumped out of a third story window on to what he thought was a field of grass. Turns out it was concrete covered in artifical turf.

Despite breaking both legs and sustaining other injuries, Boobie (still can't get over the official nickname) tried to crawl away from authorities. Now I've seen my share of deadbeat dads, but a man willing to bail out of a third story window to avoid paying child support has to take the cake.

While neglected child support is no laughing matter, it is comical and refreshing to see someone running from the law and neglecting their children get some come-uppance. Maybe in the future when Boobie bails from a window to try to avoid some unpaid parking tickets he will hit his head and get some common sense knocked into him. That is if he can ever jump again.

Flight Attendant Hero For us All

Many people are stuck in a boring, mundane job or forced to deal daily with an annoying boss or coworkers. While these disgruntled workers grind out day after day, dreaming of just leaving and telling their coworkers how they really feel, one man summonded up the courage to do what we all dreamed of. To top it off, he did it on an airplane.

By now, many people have heard the story of disgruntled Jet Blue flight attendant Steve Slater, who became so fed up with his job after dealing with an irate passenger that he grabbed a beer, deployed the plane's emergency shoot and left the aircraft after it had landed. The actions made Slater an icon, and I'm sure we will see him on talkshows and news outlets across the country for months to come.

Slater's actions were extreme, and he will face some criminal charges. However, the message that he sent to his employers is one we can all relate to. I'm not advocating those that are fed up with their jobs simply quit, especially in the manor Slater did. Taking a little action to change our lives is what I got from Slater bailing out of a plane with a beer in hand, and that is something we could all use.

Kansas Speedway Gets Second NASCAR Sprint Cup Race

Bookmark and Share
Kansas City landed its second official NASCAR Sprint Cup Race weekend to be held October 8-9. The first weekend the sport visits Kansas City will be held June 4-5, meaning the Speedway's new lights and development have landed two marquee events in Kansas City.

Hosting a sprint cup event should have an economic impact over $100 million for the Kansas City area, not to mention additional revenue for the casinos, restaurants and other areas that could benefit from tourists and additional customers.

With the addition of lights, night races are now available for the Speedway, although no races have been announced to date. With two NASCAR events locked up next year and the possibility for Indy racing and additional night races, the Speedway appears to be on the cusp of making a huge economic impact for the Kansas City area.
